Create Windows 10 Recovery Disk for System Repair or

Reset

What is a recovery disk for?

Since Windows 8, Windows has added a new feature to create a recovery drive using a USB drive to

troubleshoot and reset your computer when your computer is in serious condition. If you do not have

a USB drive to create Windows 10 recovery disk, you can use a CD or DVD to create a system repair

disc. Both types of recovery media allow you to use Windows recovery options even when your

computer fails to load. If you cannot restore your computer, Windows recovery drive also gives you a

chance to reinstall Windows 10. If your system crashes before you made a recovery drive, you can

create a Windows 10 recovery disk from another computer to boot your computer having problems.

However, the recovery drive will not work across different versions of Windows 10. In other words, you

cannot use a Windows 8 recovery disk to restore Windows 10, nor can you use a recovery drive made

by Windows 10 64-bit to boot a 32-bit computer.

How to create a Windows 10 recovery drive?

While creating a recovery drive, the program will copy a lot of files to the USB drive, so you need to

prepare a flash drive that has at least 16GB capacity. Before you do, please note that all the data on

the USB drive will be deleted in this process.

1. Connect the USB drive to your computer, and then type recovery drive into the search box. In the

listed results, select Create a recovery drive.

2. In the pop out window, check the option Back up system files to the recovery drive and hit Next.
3. Then select the USB flash drive you prepared, and clickNext to continue.

4. On the next screen, click Create to begin creating the recovery drive.
After finishing this process, you will see an option Delete the recovery partition from your PC if you

have a Windows recovery partition on your hard drive. You can click it to delete recovery partition to

free up some space on your computer. When your computer fails to boot, you can plug in this recovery

drive to recover your system. You may need to change boot order in BIOS to make your computer

boot from USB drive. As mentioned, this recovery drive will not work on different bit of system. If you

want a create windows 10 repair disk to boot any versions of Windows system, you can try another

free backup and recovery software.

Another way to protect your PC

For a recovery media to boot any versions of Windows 10/8/7, you can use AOMEI Backupper

Standard to create bootable media with DVD/CD or USB drive. It also allows you to create multiple

types of backups including system backup, disk backup, file backup and partition backup. You can

save the backup to your local disk, external hard drive or network shared folder. When your computer

is unable to boot, you can use this bootable media to restore to an earlier date.

To create recovery media with AOMEI Backupper:

1. Download this freeware. Install and run it.

2. In the Home screen, click Utilities and then select Create Bootable Media.
3. In the next screen, you can select bootable disc type from Linux based or Windows PE. Linux based

bootable media only allows you to use basic functions of AOMEI Backupper, while Windows PE allows

you to access full functions.

4. Then you can select a CD/DVD or USB drive to create this bootable recovery media and then click

Next to run this process.

If you have computers running other versions of Windows system besides Windows 10, it is

recommended to use AOMEI Backupper to create one recovery media for them all rather than create

Windows 10 recovery disk for Windows 10, and another Windows 8 recovery disk for Windows 8.

Whenever your system is unable to load, you can use it to restore system image.

How to Create and Use a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc in

Windows 8 or 10
Windows 8 or 10 allows you to create a recovery drive (USB) or system repair disc (CD or
DVD) that can be used to troubleshoot and restore your computer. Each type of recovery
media gives you access to Windows advanced startup options.

You can also copy your computers recovery partition to the drive, creating a backup copy.
After you create the backup copy, Windows will allow you to remove the recovery partition
from your computer, freeing up gigabytes of space.

Create a System Image Backup the Easy Way

Microsoft might include backup tools in

Windows, but they only do the bare minimum and they are confusing. If you want to back up
your entire computer the easy way, Acronis True Image 2016 is the way to go.

Acronis True Image 2016 can back up your entire computer, including your operating
system, applications, and data, and then restore it to the existing computer, or even a
completely separate computer.
And if you upgrade to Acronis True Image Cloud, you can optionally store a complete
backup of your entire computer in the cloud as well as on a local drive.

Creating a Recovery Drive (USB)

To open the recovery drive creation tool, press the Windows key and type recovery drive.
Click or tap the Settings category and launch the Create a recovery drive application. In
Windows 10 youll search the Start Menu for the same thing.

The Recovery Media Creator opens on your desktop. If your computer came with a
recovery partition, you can copy it to the recovery drive. Of course, this will use much more
space, so youll need a large enough USB drive. After copying the recovery partition,
Windows will ask you if you want to delete the recovery partition on the hard drive. On the
Surface with Windows RT, Microsoft claims that this can save you about 3.5 GB of hard disk
space.
Click the Next option and youll be prompted to select a connected USB drive. Click the
Create button and the files will by copied to your USB drive.
After the process is complete, youll be asked if you want to delete the recovery partition. If
you do delete the recovery partition, youll need the drive to Refresh and Reset your PC in
the future.

Creating a System Repair Disc (CD/DVD)

The ability to create a USB recovery drive is new in Windows 8 and 10. In Windows 7, only
system repair discs were supported. This option is also present in Windows 8.

To open the disc creation tool, press the Windows key, type recdisc, and press Enter.
The disc creator will open on the desktop. Select the disc-burner drive with a writable CD or
DVD in it and click the Create disc button to create a recovery disc.

Using a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc

A recovery drive will normally not be necessary. If your computer fails to boot several times,
Windows 8 or 10 will automatically bring up the advanced startup options, which allows you
to troubleshoot and fix it.

If Windows cant even bring up these tools, youll need the recovery drive, system repair
disc, or a Windows 8 or 10 installation disc. Insert the recovery media into your computer
and restart. Your computer should boot from the recovery media automatically. (If it doesnt,
you may need to change its boot order.)
Once its booted from the recovery media, youll see options for troubleshooting and
repairing your PC. You can refresh and reset your PC or access advanced options to use
system restore, recover from a system image, or automatically repair your computer. You
can even get a command prompt that will allow you to fix problems by hand.
If your computer cant boot, you should try the Automatic repair or System Restore options.
Refreshing or resetting your PC should always fix the problem, too.

After you have successfully installed Windows 10 on your computer, your next step
should be to create partitions on the hard disk drive so that you can utilize its space
more efficiently.

The best way to create partitions in Windows 10 is using the operating systems built-in
Disk Management snap-in or with the help of DISKPART command-line tool.

This tutorial demonstrates how you can easily create partitions using the Disk
Management snap-in while using Windows 10.

Here are the steps:

Log on to your Windows 10 PC with an administrator account. (The process of

creating partitions requires administrative privileges on the computer.)

Once logged on, click the File Explorer icon from the taskbar.

From the left pane (navigation pane) of the opened File Explorer window, right-
click This PC.

From the context menu, click Manage.

On the opened Computer Management snap-in, from the left pane, click to select
Disk Management from under the Storage category.

From the right pane, right-click the unallocated area of the hard disk drive in which
you want to make partitions.Note: If you have assigned the entirety of the hard drives
space to the C: drive at the time of installing Windows 10, there will be no unallocated
space left in the hard disk drive. If this happens and you still want to create a new
partition, you must shrink the C: drive by right-clicking it, selecting the Shrink Volume
option, and following the on-screen instructions to free up some space and to get the
unallocated area.

From the context menu, click Create Simple Volume.

On the welcome page of the New Simple Volume Wizard box, click Next.
On the Specify Volume Size page, in the available Simple volume size in MB
field, specify the amount of space you want to assign to this new partition. (Make sure
to specify the space in megabytes, i.e. 10240 MB for 10 GB. 1 GB = 1024 MB.)

Click Next to continue.

On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, leave everything as it is for simplicity,
and click Next. (If you are an advanced user, you can choose a drive letter of your
choice from the available Assign the following drive letter drop-down list.)

On the Format Partition page, choose the settings of your preference. (If you are
unsure what to choose, leave the default settings intact.)

Click Next to proceed. On the Completing the New Simple Volume Wizard page,
click Finish to create a new partition in the hard disk drive.

So why do we need to partition our drives? It can be for a variation for reasons, keeping

things organized, creating a backup and recovery partition or just somewhere to put all the

files you dont want cluttering up your OS install drive. We all want that part of the drive set

aside for a certain group of files (ya filthy animals!).

Lets get to it then, how do we do set it up? I have made a video showing you how you can

accomplish this on Windows. You can also continue reading to see my step by step

instructions.

First thing is first, we need to make sure we have enough space on the drive we want to

partition, its pretty simple to check that, first thing we do is head down to Cortana and type

Admin and select Administrative Tools and then onto Computer Management

then on the left hand side under Storage we want to select disk management it will

take a couple of seconds to get the information it needs from your drives.

At the top we will see our drives connected to the PC, including any USB flash drives and

hard drives you have connected. Select the drive you want, in my case its the C drive.
Looking down we see our disks displayed in a visual format, along with everything the drive

is assigned to do inside the OS. Right click on the drive and select Shrink Volume. It

will take a few minutes to figure out how much youre able to shrink.

Now we are presented with this screen, lots of numbers here, its cool. The one we want to

concentrate on is Total size after shrink in MB this is how big the current partition will

be after we shrink it, above that we have Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB

this is how big the new partition will be, its done in MBs so, if you want a 2GB partition, you

would type in 2000 simple.

Once we have found a decent size for the new partition, hit Shrink it may seem like the

computer has frozen, dont worry it hasnt try to reframe from using the computer at this

point as its working on your hard drive, last thing you want to do is confuse it and kill your

partition, it doesnt happen but, better to be safe the sorry.

Once it is done, you can see that suddenly our hard drive now has a black box thats

marked Unallocated this is our fresh new partition waiting for us to format it. Right click

the BLACK UNALLOCATED space box and click New simple volume now we have the

wizard to name and format our new partition.

Hit next, we then get to specify the volume size. It should be the size we shrunk from the

first partition earlier, if thats all good, hit next again. You can now choose a drive letter, this

doesnt matter too much. Be creative here if you want, in my case Ill be boring and leave it

at E and click next. Now we have 3 options to play with here, File System, Allocation

unit size and Volume label, depending on what you want to use the drive for, you can

change the file system, leave the allocation unit size as Default and you can call it

whatever you so desire.

I will be calling it Backup, below the Volume label box you should have a checkbox with

Perform a quick format next to it, if youre in a rush, by all means do a quick format, as
its a fresh partition, a normal format wouldnt really do much here, so we can leave that

ticked, press next, check everything is in order in the text box and hit finish.

The PC will now spend a few seconds getting your new partition ready. Once its all done,

you will find that the black box has disappeared and now has your volume name, drive

letter and size. Were done in this screen now, lets head into Explorer and see if our new

partition is showing up, if all is well, we should now have our new partition, easy as that.

Now go fill it with whatever your heart desires, ya naughty beasts!

Activating after reinstalling Windows 10

How you activate Windows 10 after reinstalling it depends on how
Windows 10 was originally installed on your device.

If you activated a free upgrade to Windows 10 or bought and activated

Windows 10 from the Windows Store, you have a digital license for your
device. This means you can reinstall the same edition of Windows 10 that
your device has a digital license for without entering a product key. During
reinstallation, if youre asked to enter a product key, you can skip this step.
Windows 10 will automatically activate online after the installation is
complete.

Notes
Make sure that Windows 10 is activated before you try to reinstall it. Select
the Start button, then select Settings > Update & security >
Activation. If Windows 10 isnt activated on your device, see Get help with
Windows 10 activation errors for more info.

For more info about how to create installation media to reinstall Windows 10,
go to the Microsoft software download website. When creating installation
media, make sure to choose the edition of Windows 10 that matches the
edition already installed on your device.

Activating Windows 10 when installing it for the first time

Youll need to use a valid product key to activate Windows 10 on a device
that has never had an activated copy of Windows 10 on it.

Youll also need to use a valid product key if you're installing an edition of
Windows 10 that wasnt previously activated on the device. For example,
you'll need a valid product key to install and activate Windows 10 Pro on a
device that had Windows 10 Home installed on it.
During the installation, youll be asked to enter a valid product key. After the
installation is complete, Windows 10 will automatically be activated
online. To check activation status in Windows 10, select the Start button,
then select Settings > Update & security > Activation. If Windows 10
isnt activated on your device, see Get help with Windows 10 activation
errors for more info.
Note
If you don't have a Windows 10 product key, you'll have the option to buy
one during setup.

Activating a new device running Windows 10

If you bought a new device running Windows 10, it will automatically activate
when you connect your device to the Internet. If the activation servers are
busy, you might need to wait a while for Windows to activate.

To check activation status, select the Start button, then select Settings >
Update & security > Activation.
Note
In some cases, you might need to enter the Windows 10 product key that
came with the device packaging, or included as a card or on the Certificate
of Authenticity (COA) attached to the device.
