CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Home is a dwelling place where parents and children build harmonious relationship. It is

more than four walls and a roof overhead. It becomes a mold that forms who they are. If ones

individual started studying, it is said that the school will serves as his/her second home while the

teachers will stand as their second guardian.

The first moment that a child steps out at school, it is the teachers responsibility to guide

him to learn. Teachers serve as the second parents at school. It is important for them to build

good relationship and an open communication to understand each other. Based on the book,

Principles and Strategies of Teaching by Acero, Javier and Castro (2005), it is said that

Teaching is the responsibility of the teacher while learning is the responsibility of the learner.

Learning is on the hands of the students. It is up to his eagerness and willingness that made him

learned well.

According to Acero et. al, Under the close supervision of an effective teacher, the

individual gradually, slowly and cumulatively learn things to his age and grade level. The

individuals learning is based on what he learns from school and the proper guidance of his

teachers and parents. The proper treatment of teachers to his students has a vital role in molding

their character and growth in the future.

Our perception of the world is subjected to judgment by our mind. Our mind can do this

in two ways, through thinking and feeling. (Corpuz & Salandanan, 2003)
In this present generation, two decades are needed in order to finish college and earned

titles and degrees. If the teacher is the second parent at school, the four corners of the classroom

was the dwelling place of each generated dreams of minds of students. Different teachers they

meet, teachers have their own way on how to exercise their profession but whatever way, they

agree on one responsibility - to grow the dreams of students by showering advice and

knowledge.Teachers are also expected to show commitment to the basic task of a school, that of

facilitating the personal and intellectual development of students. As such, they are expected to

willingly devote personal time for students who need special attention and guidance. (Garcia,

2005)

Significance of the Study

Teachers. In order for them to be an effective educator, they need to fully know and

understand the behaviour and attitude of each student and the proper treatment on dealing with

them while respecting their emotional and mental state upon teaching.

Students. To avoid misunderstandings between students and teachers, it is advised that

proper communication among them should be the priority. This will help determine the student

due to the actions of teachers.

Parents. Gaining confidence on the part of parents in entrusting their children on how

teachers deal and treat their children well at school is their primary concern.

It was mentioned in the writings entitled Teaching at Its Best by Nilson (2010) that

The nature of our students their academic preparation, aspirations, and cognitive development
affects our choices of what and how to teach. We need to think our job not as teaching Art,

Biology, English, History, Math, Psychology, and so on but as teaching students.

Nilson's writings has a great relevance to our study because the teaching effectiveness of

a teacher is reflected by his purpose to share his knowledge. In an individual, if he is interested in

what he does, he will give more time and attention on it than the other things he isn't interested

at. In other words, the teaching method of a teacher becomes the reflection of how he gives value

to his profession.

It was also stated in the writings of Salandanan (2007) entitled Elements of Good

Teaching that Simple rewards work well in maintaining discipline. At times, it is not positive

incentives. Corrective words said amicably are more effective and will not cause embarrassment.

At this stage, students are ultrasensitive to things happening around them.

This study has something to do with what Salandanan said about the effective

disciplining method of a teacher because this study highlights the techniques they use inside the

classroom and how their students accept these methods.

From the book of Creating Positive Classrooms by Ollerton (2005), it states that

Helping student achieve their potential and develop their talents is a significant challenge for

schools and teachers; as such, much depends upon the ethos a school has, the implicit messages a

school transmits are the models that individual teachers offers.

This statement helps in explaining the importance of the teachers role in the learning of

the students. Teachers serve as a model to the students. Whatever actions or words they use, there

is a chance that it will affect the students by mimicking the words they heard from their teacher.
Related Studies

In the study, The Chemistry Teachers Communication Behaviors in Relation to

Students Attitude and Performance, of Sierto (2013) states that The more the teacher connects

or communicates with his or her students, the more likely they will be able to help students learn

at a high level accomplish quickly. A teacher and student, who have the qualities of good

communications, respect in a classroom, and show interest in teaching from the point of view of

the teacher and learning from a student, will establish a positive relationship in the classroom.

This study has something to do with what Sierto said because communication is essential

to have a good exchanging of opinions between individuals. The author highlights the methods

that can be used to have a positive communication inside the classroom.

It was mentioned by Calubaquib (2010) in his study Mentoring Beginning Teachers in

Public Elementary that Because the responsibility of education young children lies in the

hands of the teacher, the effectiveness of and success in implementation of their role depend so

much on the amount of assistance, support and supervision they receive from their colleagues

and administrators. It is the scenario where people find themselves moving into a new direction,

they look for others who can give them a hand and to whom they can turn for advice and

encouragement to help them conquer their fears and stay on tract.

This statement relates to the study because the researcher wants to convey that the

students need care from their teachers, care such as giving advice, showing appreciation for their

feelings, a longer patience, and understanding their shortcomings. These will help in the study to

see the effects of these methods in the students.

In the study of Dapon, De Guzman, Dela Cruz, Dela Paz, Macaraeg, Pascual and

Tolentino (2001) entitled A Comparative Study of Maintaining Discipline between Elementary

and High School Students in Saint James Academy for School Year 2000-2001 states that In

order to achieve discipline in a classroom, every pupil must develop first their self-discipline.

The connection of this study by Dapon et. al, in the research is the way the teacher

disciplines his/her students. To achieve discipline in a classroom, one the student, must have

self-discipline. The self-discipline can be developed in different ways and influenced by his/her

environment.
