Mr.

Hardmans Chemistry 1 Honors Lab Report Guidelines and Rubric

To receive full credit on a formal lab experiment, Honors students must turn in a complete, typed lab
report to the FOCUS Portal. This report must be in complete sentences and have the following sections
and their contents:

1. Heading: the first few line at the top of the page that states the following:
a. Title of experiment: The title says what you did. It should be brief (aim for 10 words or
less) and describe the main point of the experiment or investigation. An example of a
titled would be: Effects of Ultraviolet Light on Borax Crystal Growth Rate. If you can,
begin your title using a keyword rather than an article like The or A
b. Your name and the names of your lab partners
c. Teachers name
d. Date the lab report was submitted

2. Introduction/Purpose:
a. One paragraph that explains the objectives/purpose of the lab (Why did you do the lab?
What are you trying to solve?)
b. In one sentence, state the hypothesis (an educated statement based of the labs
purpose)
c. Include any background information
d. Briefly summarize how the experiment was performed

3. Materials: List everything needed to complete your experiment (chemicals, equipment). Be


sure to include amounts and units. WRITE IN PARAGRAPH FORM, DO NOT GIVE A
BULLET POINT LIST.

4. Methods: Describe the steps you completed during your investigation. This is your procedure.
Be sufficiently detailed so that anyone could read this section and duplicate your experiment.
Write as if you were giving directions for someone else to do the lab. Be sure it in
PARAGRAPH FORM, NOT BULLET POINTS. Include diagrams of the equipment used or
the set-up (this can be cell phone pictures of lab set-up; pictures before, during, and after
of the procedure, etc.)

5. Data: Qualitative and Quantitative observations should be presented in a table just the facts,
not opinions! (Most likely this will come from the questions and data tables and
calculations within the lab.)

6. Results
a. Describe what the data means
b. Present any quantitative data in a graph to show a relationship
i. Must have titles
ii. Labeled axes with proper units
7. Conclusions
a. Your conclusion is a single paragraph that sums up what happened in the experiment,
whether your hypothesis was accepted or rejected, and what this means.
