Assessment for learning

Learning Goal:

Students will research tattoo/graffiti artists and choose a style they would like to analyze and recreate.

Class Procedures/Daily Preparation:

- 10 min. Hook: Why is identity important and how it can help you in your future career
- Learning about what makes you unique and how your attributes are your own personal skills.
- 10 min. Who is the teacher? (Kat Self Map)
- Self Map Attributes/ Places/ Favorite things/ Relationships
3. (20 min.)
- 10 min. Have students create their own self map
- 10 min. Have students organize their thoughts into the four directions:
Where are you from? (community, culture, language, land)
Where have you been?
Where are you now?
Where are you going?
4. (30 min.)
- Students are to go into the computer lab and complete the tattoo mentor artist handout
- The handout requires students to research an artist that they would like to learn about and study their
work.
- Students should pick one of the artists works and print it by the end of the class as a model for their
own symbol.
5. (10 min.) Wrap up

Learning Goal:

Students will create a rough work of their symbol using the research of skills that they have learned.

Class Procedures/Daily Preparation:


1.(10 min.) Attendance
2. (10 min.)
- Introduce the activity about creating a tattoo and how creating a symbol should represent all the
aspects that make that person unique.
- Introduce the health and legal aspects of making a tattoo
- Health: Clean instruments, healing
- Legal Wavers
3. (30 min.)
- Have students take all the information they gathered (Tattoo Mentor handout, 4 directions work
sheet, tattoo image) and have them create a rough draft of their symbol/ tattoo.
- Students have the option to create their own symbol or one for a classmate based on the information
written on the handouts about that person. If they decide to do a symbol for a classmate, they have to
create something that the client would like not themselves.
4. (30 min.)
- Students start thinking about what body part they would want their tattoo on and how to incorporate
it around their work
- Students should think about how they are going to incorporate their drawing onto the canvas and
what sort of techniques they will need to use to create their own approach on their tattoo mentors
style.
5. (10 min.)
- clean up and wrap up
- students should place rough drafts inside portfolio for further review

- Work period: walk around and assist students with work

- Students will fill out the resource journal and critically analyze their own work.
- They will analyze the meaning behind their painting, design of painting (foal point, lines etc) and
write an overall reflection of what they learned about themselves.
