The authors are profoundly beholden to the benevolent educator Engr. Rolly L. Carreon. For those who
know him, no words are necessary; for those who do not, no words will suffice. The preeminent educator
in Civil Engineering Department of Saint Louis College, Engr. Leonora F. Quarte, should be credited for
encouraging the authors to continue working for their dreams and aspirations.
Lots of devout engineering mentors, college administrators, deans, chairpersons, professors, librarians,
support personnel, friends and benefactors have tremendously inspired and positively influenced the
author to come up with this compilation. Engineering mentors: Engr. Karla Joy Acosta, Engr. Jonell

Design of Beams
I
Plain concrete and steel are the two commonly used materials from which structures are built.
When these two are used together, they are termed as Reinforced Concrete (RC). Reinforced concrete is
Reinforced concrete, as a combination of plain concrete and steel, exhibits the properties of both
materials. Possessing a high compressive strength, plain concrete is reinforced with steel to complement
the need for tensile strength of the concrete due to its low tensile resistance. Plain concrete is made by
mixing cement, fine and coarse aggregates, water and admixtures. Reinforced concrete is formed from
embedded reinforcing steel on the solidified mass of wet concrete mix. By placing steel bars in the
tension zone, the strength of the structural members is greatly increased. Due to its capability of resisting
compression, RC is also used to provide part of carrying capacity in reinforced concrete most specifically
beams and columns. A beam is completely analyzed when its value of bending moment and shear are
obtained due to its loading. A rigid frame is subjected to bending moments connected by rigid joints
A
capable of resisting moments. Members of a rigid frame are subjected to bending moments, shear, and
axial forces. It is particularly designed and analyzed through the determination of the variations in direct
A
stress, shear, and moment along the span of all the members.
Frames are composed of beams and columns and are generally used in multi-storey buildings.
I
From the standpoint of analysis, the structure is generally indeterminate, due to their rigid joint
connections imposed with loadings that cause bending on the members. The strength of the frame is
C
derived from the moment interactions between the beams and the columns at rigid joints, and as a result,
6
the economical benefits of using a frame depend on the efficiency gained in using reduced beam size
versus the increasing the size of the columns due to the beam column action brought about by bending
at the joints.
An example of a building with a frame structure is the given residential building with a ground
floor, and a second floor. The residential building has a total floor area of 261.2 square meters. The
ground floor consists of a veranda, kitchen, dining area, living area, toilet and bath, and two bedrooms;
while the second floor consists of a terrace, two toilet and bath, and three bedrooms. And thus, these
The said structure has four spans on the longitudinal side and two spans on the transverse side
with varying dimensions. The concrete frames are composed of beams and columns that are
symmetrically located with sizes and dimensions as specified on the working drawings. Other technical
All members of frames or continuous construction are being designed for the maximum effects of
Factored Loads as determined by the theory of elastic analysis. As the structure is being analyzed, the
most critical section in which the structure has the most probable cause of collapsing is the one being
considered. Considering the most critical transverse and longitudinal section minimum dead loads and
live loads are assumed. Assumptions are made for the computation of relative flexural stiffness of
columns and beams. The assumptions adopted are consistent throughout the analysis.
The Ultimate-Strength Design (USD) method has been adopted due to its more realistic
approach compared with the Working-Stress Design (WSD) method. A more realistic consideration of
safety is used, and it provides more economical designs. With this method the working dead and live
loads are multiplied by certain load factors or safety factors and the resulting values are called
FACTORED LOADS. The members are then selected so they will theoretically just fail under factored
loads.
In the design proper, it should be fully understood and be thoroughly evaluated that the ultimate
moments at left, mid-span, and right supports were identified based on the determined governing loads
A
through the use of Graphical Rapid Analysis of Structures Program (GRASP). Moment distribution
method is also used for the computation of final fixed-end moments for the manual computations of
A
member forces.
Each beam is designed as singly reinforced concrete, and the number of D-20mm and D-25mm

different supports. Furthermore, the designed rectangular reinforced concrete beams are checked with

the cracking strengths and external exposure. The drawing and details for each beam is included to
clearly represent the proper position of reinforcements and the stirrups in the actual construction.
The assumed minimum design loads were based from Chapter 2 of the Sixth Edition of the
National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP 2010) where loads and appropriate load
