Katrina Barnett

Practicum
Identification of Learning Problem

Target audience: Grade 3 students who struggled with the

writing and language section of GMAS (Georgia Milestone

Assessment).

Need for instruction: The reading and language section of the

3rd grade GMAS test is 47% out of 100% of the test. Students at

NMES scored below 50% on this section of the test. This

indicates that the students need more practice with responding

to constructed response items and extended constructed-response

items.

Discrepancies: Teachers are not consistently holding students

accountable for responding to these types of questions.

Students are not prepared for this section of this test, because

some teachers wait until weeks before the test before they

introduce it to students.

Goal: Teachers will create a Prezi presentation based on a

Common Core writing standard. In it, they will model how to

respond to constructed response questions. Afterwards, using a

web 2.0 tool, they will give their students a writing prompt to
respond to.

Needs assessment (Felt needs): Using a questionnaire, data will

be analyzed in order to determine how many teachers improved

their instruction by creating a Prezi presentation that models

how students should respond to constructed response type

questions. In addition, a multiple intelligence assessment will

be given to students in order to assess exactly what types of

learners we are dealing with.

Anticipated needs: More teachers will begin to use Prezi to

deliver instruction in the classroom. In addition, students

will show gains on this years GMAS.

Learner Analysis

Research suggests that there are different types of learners.

The target learners for this assignment encompass many different

characteristics. According to the VARK model, there are four

types of learners: visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and

reading/writing. This task will focus on the visual learners.

All of the learners will be taking GMAS for the second time.

This time they will be taking the test as a 4th grader. The
information presented to them should be engaging and challenging

in order to keep their interest. In addition, the task will be

shared with current 3rd grade teachers in order to help the

students who will be taking the test for the first time.

The age range of the learners range between eight and ten years

of age. There are roughly 300 students total in grades 3-4.

Approximately 70% of the staff members are black, 29% are white,

and 1% other. Most of the adult learners are positive about

their jobs and want to engage their students with technology and

other tools. There are no learners with obvious disabilities

other than vision impairments that are being treated with

prescription eye wear. However, there are some students with

visible disabilities. Several wear glasses, and approximately

10 have IEPs. There are resource classes for these students in

math and reading; however, no services are available for

writing.

With all trainings, a few obstacles are imminent. A few obvious

problems will be that some employees are frustrated with

constant change in instruction and standards. Therefore, giving

them another task to complete will be frustrating. In addition,

a few veteran teachers may want to continue doing things the way

theyve been doing them. Most of them are satisfied with

tradition paper and pencil lessons. Being aware of these

possible issues will affect how the instruction will be

presented to the learners.

Task Analysis

Procedural Analysis is the content structure most appropriate for

presenting information using steps. In order to complete a Prezi

presentation, learners will need to know what actions should occur.

These actions should be clearly stated observable and unobservable

steps.

Katrina Barnett, the SME (subject matter expert,) should walk through

each step with the target learners. The SME has had professional

training using the Prezi program. In addition, she has used the

program in her classroom for four years. Under her guidance, her

fifth grade students have successfully created Prezi presentations to

showcase their learning experiences.

In addition, the SME is an experienced writing teacher who has

researched strategies to help students respond to constructed

response questions.

Audience: Grades 3-4 elementary school teachers

Goal/Purpose: Teachers will create a Prezi presentation based on a

Common Core writing standard. In it, they will model how to respond
to constructed response questions.

to respond to a constructed
response question.

Procedure/Application Using the insert option on

Prezi, the target learner will
choose a YouTube video related
to the chosen writing standard
and insert it into their
presentation.

Assessments

Below is a compilation of assessments that can be used to assess the

objective of creating a presentation using the web based tool, Prezi.

Prezi is a tool that is very similar to the well known computer based

program, Microsoft Power-point. They share many similarities;

however, there are some benefits to using a web based tool vs.

computer based. Therefore, activity number one requires the target

learners to compare the two.

Secondly, to make sure that the target learners are basing their

presentation on a common core writing standard they have been asked

to analyze a few standards and choose the one most appropriate for
their presentation. After making this choice, they have to explain

their answer and send it to the instructor/subject matter expert

electronically using another online tool, Padlet.

Next, one of my favorite online assessments tools to use in class is

Kahoot.it! This is a web based tool that analyzes student responses

and provides a data analysis. It is a multiple choice question quiz

that analyzes the target learners use of the Prezi tool. If not in

the presence of the instructor/subject matter expert, the target

learner will need two devices with internet service in order to

complete the assessment. The instructor/SME will be able to gather

the data at his/her leisure since this is a web based tool. Using

the data analysis, the instructor will be able to deliver immediate

feedback regarding the subject matter. The correct answer to each

question is provided after the target learner responds. There are

two different Kahoot.it! activities included. The first one is for

intermediate students (students who have very little experience with

Prezi). The second link provided is for those who have more

experience with the tool. Based on the target learners abilities,

they may complete the assessment that best meets their needs.

Lastly, the rubric for the task is provided. This is an online,

effective rubric that can be used to explicitly deliver the

expectations for this task.

Each task was created or gathered in order to meet the different

needs of students. Visual learners will appreciate the use of the

graphic organizer activity. It allows them to analyze the

information in an organized manner. The Kahoot.it! activity is very

engaging. It is a blended learning formative assessment tool that

keeps students wanting more.

1. Directions: Using a Venn Diagram, identify the similarities

and differences between Prezi and power-point. An online Venn
Diagram can be found using the link provided. Save your work
and send it to your instructor.

Heres an example:

2. Which of the following standard would be appropriate for

this assignment? Choose the correct answer and send your
response along with a 3-5 sentence explanation to your
instructor via padlet.

A. Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an

opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons.

B. Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

C. Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology,

comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas,
concepts, or information in two or more texts.

3. Complete the Kahootit! Online review quiz and send your score to
your instructor. You will need two electronic devices in order to
complete the assessment.

Content Sequencing and Instructional Strategies

Sequence Description Objective

1 Demonstrate how to search for videos 2

on YouTube

Strategy: Have the target learners

think, pair, and share the benefits
of effectively using YouTube in the
classroom.
2 Demonstrate how to copy and paste URL 2
address of youtube video.

Strategy: Show the target learners

step by step screenshots of how to
copy and paste URL addresses.

3 Demonstrate how to create a free 1

Prezi account

Initial Presentation: Show the

target learners a YouTube video
highlighting the purpose and benefits
of using Prezi and other web based
tools to engage learners in the
classroom.

4 Differentiate the types of Prezi 1

presentations and the expectations of
the content

Strategy: Have the target learners

work in groups to discuss the results
of the 2015-2016 writing portion of
GMAS.

5 Select a theme/template for 1

presentation

Strategy: Show example of

presentations that contain relevant
themes and discuss the importance of
choosing your theme/ template wisely.
Example: If your content relates to
sports, choose the sports related
template.

6 Describe how to add text to each 1

slide

Strategy: Share prepared screencast

of how to complete this task.

7 Demonstrate how to insert YouTube 2

video using the copied URL address

Strategy: Use prepared screenshots

8 Demonstrate how to view and edit 1
Prezi presentation

9 Explain how Prezi will automatically 1

save presentation

Strategy: Have the learners complete

an exit ticket using the 3,2,1
strategy. Three things youve
learned, two things you still want to
know, one question you have.

This task will be differentiated to meet the needs of the target

learners. The target learners will have the opportunity to choose a

math standard that they are familiar with in order to create their

presentation. The math standard can be based on the grade that the

target learner is currently teaching, or he/she can choose a lower or

higher grade level standard to meet their needs and/or the needs of

their students. In addition, if the target learner is not a classroom

teacher, he/she can choose an appropriate standard based on their

current teaching assignment.

Instructional Design Summary

In order to gain the attention of the target learners, the SME will

have the target learners participate in an online Kahoot.it quiz. It

will allow them to analyze the information in an organized manner.

The Kahoot.it! activity is very engaging. It is a blended learning

formative assessment tool that keeps students wanting more because of

the competitive nature of the assessment. This assessment will be

completed again at the end of the presentation, so target learners

can see how much theyve learned from the presentation. They will

compare their pre-assessment scores to their post assessment scores.

The learning objectives will be delivered to the target learners

using the webtool that the target learners are required to utilize

for this assignment. This will give the learners an opportunity to

see how the tool can be effective in the classroom.

The SME will ignite background knowledge regarding the content.

Target learners will share how they use technology in order to

deliver content in the classroom.

The SME will deliver content using models, screenshots and

screencasts. The s creenshots will help visual learners understand

the concept being delivered. The screencasts will assist visual and

auditory learners.

The sequence of instruction will begin with the SME demonstrating how

to search for and copy paste the URL address of content related

YouTube videos. The target learners will be asked to engage in a

think, pair, activity in order to discuss how theyve previously used

this strategy. This directly relates to objective #2 because that

objective requires the learners to insert a YouTube video into their

Prezi presentations. Screenshots will be used to visually assist the

learners with comprehending the task.

Afterwards, the SME will focus on objective #1 which requires the SME

to create a web based presentation using Prezi.com. The SME will

demonstrate how to sign up for an account, how to choose a template

for their presentation, and how to insert text into their

presentation.

An informative YouTube video highlighting the benefits of Prezi will

be shown, models of Prezi presentations will be analyzed using think,

pair, and share; and the SME will create a screencast to the target

learners that they can access at any time to assist them with

completing the task. A screencast is a digital recording of ones

computer screen. It will capture all of the all of the steps it

takes to create a Prezi presentation accompanied by narration.

At this time, the SME can distribute the graphic organizer that

requires the target learners to compare the web based tool, Prezi to

the computer based tool, Microsoft PowerPoint. The graphic organizer

will allow them to visually see the benefits of the web based tool.

Next, objective #2 will be covered again as the SME models how to

paste (insert) the YouTube video into their presentations. This will

all be covered using the screenshots and screencast mentioned

earlier.
After this, it would be appropriate to make sure that the target

learners are basing their presentation on a common core standard that

will be covered on the writing portion of GMAS. They will be asked

to analyze a few standards and choose the one most appropriate for

their presentation. After making this choice, they have to explain

their answer and send it to the instructor/subject matter expert

electronically using another online tool.

After reviewing responses to the assessments, the SME will be able to

provide feedback to the target learners before they complete their

task. After the students complete their tasks, the SME will be able

to deliver feedback using the web tool edmodo.com. This is the tool

that the target learners will used to submit their work. It is a

teacher/student blog platform that allows the SME to provide

individual feedback after reviewing the work sent.

The SME will get rid of barriers by creating and using models of the

task for the students. Options will be offered and the target

learners will be able to choose a writing related topic that they are

interested in.

Each task was created or gathered in order to meet the different

needs of students. Visual learners will appreciate the use of the

graphic organizer activity. It allows them to analyze the

information in an organized manner. The Kahoot.it! activity is very

engaging. It is a blended learning formative assessment tool that

keeps students wanting more.

This task will be differentiated to meet the needs of the target

learners. The target learners will have the opportunity to choose a

standard that they are familiar with in order to create their

presentation. The standard can be based on the grade that the target

learner is currently teaching, or he/she can choose a lower or higher

grade level standard to meet their needs and/or the needs of their

students. In addition, if the target learner is not a classroom

teacher, he/she can choose an appropriate standard based on their

current teaching assignment.

Formative Evaluation Plan

A seasoned technology instructor would be a likely candidate for an

SME who can review the instruction and development of this task.

This expert will be competent and interested in the evaluation task.

He/she is someone who will be an expert with the web tool, Prezi.

Having previously used it to present information to county employees

regarding another subject matter.

Having a test audience participate in the task will allow the

presenter to gather feedback before the task is actually carried out

with the actual target learners. The test audience will complete the

task along with the assessments. Afterwards, they will complete the

following survey in order to help the presenter prepare for the

presentation.
