Steam Traps and Strainers

PART 1: GENERAL PROVISIONS


1.01 GENERAL
A. This Specification defines the design criteria, minimum quality, methods and procedures,
tools and equipment, labor and materials for furnishing, fabricating, assembling and
installing permanently installed steam traps and strainers, complete as shown on the
drawings, on lists and schedules or in notes and other instructions and included in these
specifications.
B. The steam traps and strainers shall be installed in lines as described in the specifications
and as shown on schematic and piping installation drawings. Steam Traps with their
associated trapping systems shall be installed at all low points in the steam mains, at all
expansion joints and at maximum distances between joints of XXX feet. Bypasses shall
be installed only around traps as shown.

1.02 CODES, REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS


A. The steam traps shall be designed and installed in accordance with National, State and
Local Codes and Regulations and such statutory provisions pertaining to the system
specified.
B. Materials and installations shall be in accordance with the following Industry and
Association Standards:
1. FCI 65.3 Std. for Determining Industrial Steam Trap Capacity
2. AWS Welding
3. ANSI B31.1
4. ASTM Materials
C. The Contractor shall comply with all such regulations and standards and shall protect
and indemnify the Owner against any claim or liability arising from, or based upon,
nonconformance with the regulations and standards, resulting from normal service.

1.03 DIVISION 33 SPECIFICATIONS


A. This Specification supplements and complements the technical information contained in
the following Division 33 Specifications and made a part of these construction
specifications.

2. 331115 Pipe and Pipe Fittings
3. 336500 Thermal Insulation

1.04 DESIGN CRITERIA


A. The Contractor shall consider, review and confirm the following Design Criteria in the
design and installation of the Steam Trap System:
1. Steam System HPS
2. Design Pressure 150 PSI with all components rated for 300 PSI

1.05 TECHNICAL SUBMITTALS


A. The Contractor shall prepare and submit scaled shop drawings and system layouts for
the Owner's approval, showing in plan, elevation and in sectional details, the
arrangement, location and spacing of all parts of the steam trap system with the
designation of materials and design criteria included.
B. The Contractor shall consult the design drawings and plan his work to avoid interference
with existing and planned piping, insulation, conduit and work of other trades.
C. Work shall not commence in shop or field until the Contractor's drawings and submittals
have received the Owner's approval.
D. Work done without approved drawings shall be promptly replaced without charge to the
Owner.
E. The Contractor shall submit a list of recommended spare parts and assemblies,
individually listed and priced.

PART 2: MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS


2.01 GENERAL
A. The Contractor shall be responsible for his own material take-off, tools and equipment,
and his own field safety program.
B. Piping, fittings, strainers, traps and associated equipment shall be of new and domestic
manufacture, and commercially available.

2.02 STEAM TRAPS


A. Steam line Thermodynamic traps shall be Spirax/Sarco Thermodynamic Type TD-52 or
approved equal.
B. Inverted Bucket Traps shall be Spirax Sarco Model SIB stainless steel construction,
screwed ends.

2.03 STRAINERS
A. Strainers less than 2 shall be cast steel, screwed ends, s.s. 60 mesh screen, Spirax
Sarco Fig. CT or approved equal.
B. Strainers greater than 2 shall be cast steel, 300 # flanged, s.s. standard mesh screen,
Spirax Sarco Fig. 34 or approved equal.

2.04 VALVES
A. Shut-off valves to the steam traps shall be 800# Forged Steel Gate Valve (ASTM A105),
13% Cr. Trim, Conventional Port, Rising Inside Screw Stem, Union Bonnet, Solid Wedge

Disc and Hard Faced Seats, Screwed Packing Gland, Spiral Wound Gasket Between
Body and Bonnet, Socket Weld Ends (Vogt SW 59851 or equal).
B. Test valve shall be George B. Allan Co. or approved equal. See valve Spec 331217.

2.05 APPROVAL
A. No materials shall be incorporated in the steam trap system unless they have been
shown on the shop drawings and approved by the Owner. Decision by the Owner on
product suitability shall be binding.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL
A. The Contractor shall receive all materials and components and shall inspect them for
condition, completeness and suitability for the service intended, prior to the start of work.
B. Installation shall be performed by workmen skilled in the piping trade working under the
direct supervision of a competent, assigned field superintendent.
C. The superintendent shall be responsible for coordination of the work and cooperation
with the Owner and other trades.
D. All threaded joints shall be made up using non-hardening joint compound.
E. Materials and workmanship shall be first class in every respect and shall be subject to
Owner's inspection to any time after award of contract.
F. Welding procedures and welder qualification data shall be submitted for the Owner's
review and approval prior to the initiation of the work.
G. At the close of the project, the Contractor shall provide the Owner with a marked up sepia
of each drawings showing the "as built" condition of the system.

3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Steam Traps and trapping systems shall be installed at all low points in the steam mains,
at maximum distances between joints of XXX feet, at all expansion joints and as shown
on the drawings. Bypasses shall be installed only around traps as shown.
B. Traps shall be installed after system testing and cleaning.
