3 Retrospective for Prospective

Architectural Landscape

Introduction

Landscaping is the design of outdoor and exterior spaces to

achieve socio-behavioral, environmental, and/or aesthetic
outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing
social, ecological, geological and built structures conditions and
processes in the landscape, and the careful design of
interventions that will interact with these conditions and
processes to produce the desired outcome.

The fit between architecture and the land that surrounds it is a

perennial issue since architecture in its broadest sense includes
indoor and outdoor space, buildings and parks, plazas and
parkways. A given landscape confronts the designer with a vast
array of constraints and opportunities that must be addressed
with clarity and decisiveness if architectural work is to respond
successfully to basic human needs and embody fundamental
cultural values.

This project is about exploring the idea of

cultural/community/historical architecture and
its architectural manifestation.

Project Objectives
A public building like a pavilion is meant to be used by its
surrounding community to carry out activities that the building
offers. As being designed for the use of the community, it has
to work well in bringing the community that surrounds it for it
to be efficient and well used.

The site landscape that surrounds the building on the other

hand has to act as an outdoor public space that works together
with the building, thus creating a comprehensive combination of
indoor and outdoor spaces that uplifts the function of the whole
premise.

Landscaping embodies the imagination of the possibilities of

what might happen in the next moment, while it carries on the
sentiments of the stories that just passed by a second ago. A
successful landscaping not only facilitates different functions of
users needs, but also assists everyone in identifying their path
and helps to shape a collective identity for the communities
who use the place daily.

Designing the landscaping of a public building is quite a

challenge. From functional aspects, designers have to be
sensitive about how the design vocabularies that we create (i.e.,
seating areas, plant canopies, water features, topography
changes, etc.) interact with peoples movements, behaviors,
and activities.

1. The outdoor landscape of the building should make a

positive contribution to the general appearance of the
area in which they are located. Well-designed landscape
designs can be a major asset to the business, activities,
the building, the neighborhood or development.
2. Relationship to the building
Must have great considerations to the buildings
architectural style and/or inherent character of the
building.
Design (to stand out or blend in) has to be justified.
3. The location and placement of outdoor furniture should be
placed at the most strategic location as to serve the
subjects (pedestrian, motorists etc).
4. Any structures should be proportional in size to the
mosque. It should take into account the vantage point of
the viewer.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the project, the student should

have:
1. An awareness of the process of visual transformation and
communication in the shaping of the physical and
conceptual environment.
2. A deeper appreciation for aesthetics in our surrounding
environment.
3. General understanding of forms, shapes and symbols.
