Grid Connection

For the chosen site, the transmission network operates at Voltages >132kV (132kV,
275kV, 400kV) and is owned by Scottish Power Transmission (SPT).The transmission
network system as a whole is operated by the National Grid Electricity Transmission
(NGET). The procedure of connecting to the network is shown as follows:

1 CONCEPT
Gathering the main attributes for a potential project required prior to application. Our
wind farm belongs to small power station (<30MW).
2 Site requirements

3 APPLICATION
Our wind farm belongs to small power station (<30MW) ,so Bilateral Embedded
Licence Exemptable Large Power Station Agreement is needed for connecting to the
grid. This agreement type is available to generators that are smaller than 100 MW. A
generator with a BELLA will contract with National Grid, and will also require a
corresponding connection agreement with Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The
BELLA states how generators will be required to comply with the: (1)Grid Code
(2) Connection and Use of System (CUSC). Furthermore, a Construction agreement
(CONSAG) is needed for building substation and overhead line.

4 PLANNING AND DESIGN

For planing and design, the wind turbine produces electricity at 690v. Enercon offers a
transformer which changes the electricity from 690v to 11,000v. 11,000v of electricity
is delivered to a substation. Once at substation, 11,000v of electricity is increased
again to 275,000v. This further reduces the power losses from transmission. The
electricity is then passed to the national grid.

The nearest substation is 13.72km far from the chosen wind farm site, so building a
new substation is needed. The new substation is shown on construction map.

The distance between the substation and the the chosen wind turbine site is 820m and
717m respectively. Through calculation from a cable size calculator
(http://www.clevelandcable.com/calculator.php), 70mm2 3 core armoured cable is
needed. Furthermore, Scottish Power Transmission (SPT) only offers overhead line
installation.
