Objective
First, get to learn the projectile motion. Second, get to
know about the change of energy, which is
understanding how potential energy will transfer to
kinetic energy.

Chemical Material:

Vinegar

Baking Soda

Laboratory Apparatus:

Plastic bottle Duct Tape

Gloves Future board

PVC Pipe Cardboard

Measuring cup Colour paint

Spary colour Glue

Scissors Weight
Set-up

The first rocket with wings is the first trial that didnt reach the target.
The launcher is made of of pvc tubes and a flat wooden board
This is the actual launcher that we use in our rocket project..-Rookie

This the the actual rocket that we did in the rocket project. The condition that is in
this stated is because the material that we design the rocket isnt strong enough so
we recommend that the people who are doing this project next should prepare more
offensive or strong material for this rocket or prepare a spare rocket just in case the
actual rocket is in the state that is not useable.
Background/introduction
This project including two different kind of subject,
Physics, and Chemistry. For the purpose, we would like
to use our knowledge to apply in this experiment. In the
physic part, we are going to use what we had learnt in
this whole year and design a rocket and launcher that
can help us to approach the best score, which may
involve in Newtons Law, momentum, projectile, etc.
For example, in general the suitable angle to shot a
farthest length will be 45 degree, but we need to find out
the one fit to our rocket in this experiment. Chemistry
part will involve on the measurement of the chemical
that will be use during the bottle experiment and form a
energy that can push the rocket into sky, which the
chemical we are going to use will be baking soda and
vinegar. And than we must reach the target that has a
distance of 20m from the starting point.
Discussion of Physics Concept

Measurements, the act of process of measuring, in

our daily life we can measure things like our weight,
height, temperature, etc. In this rocket project we are
going to measure the angle of launch, the amount of
baking soda and vinegar, the length of trajectory, and
the mass of rocket.

Newtons Laws of motion, for the first law it means

that An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on
by an unbalanced force. . Second law talk about that :
Acceleration is produced when a force act on a mass.
The greater the mass the greater the amount of force
needed. . Lastly, the third law is quite simple, it mention
about every action has an equal and opposite re-action.
For this project, when the rocket launch to the sky it will
fall down in the end, it is because of the gravity, which is
a type of acceleration, and acceleration is one of the
main point of Newtons law of motion.

Linear motion, also called as uniform motion or

rectilinear motion, is the motion in one spatial
dimension. Linear motion related to projectile motion by
their formula, which projectile motion use the formula of
linear motion to calculate any quantity.
Projectile is the motion of object given initial velocity
that then move only under force of gravity. In the
experiment, the motion path of rocket is the projectile
motion that has initial velocity, and we would like to
study the suitable angle for our target that has a
horizontal distance of 20 meters, with the size of 3 meter
of diameter. In our group, we found out that the angle
with 45 degree will be the most suitable to reach the
target.

Impulse is the product of force and time interval over

which it acts. For the momentum, it is the product of
objects mass and velocity. We would like to know the
momentum when the rocket reach our target.

Energy is non-material property capable of causing

changes in matter, and has the ability to make things
happen. Kinetic energy is a kind of energy of object due
to its motion, and the potential energy is the energy that
due to its position or state. Work is the product of force
and displacement in the direction of the force. Lastly,
power is the rate of doing work, and the rate of energy
conversion. During the launch, the energy of rocket will
change from kinetic energy to potential energy because
of the path of motion or you can say the change of
position. And the energy of rocket will change back to
kinetic energy in the end when it collide to the target.
Discussion of Design

We decide to go with a simple design like a bullet in

order to cut out the unnecessary decoration which add
more weight to the rocket. The launcher will aim at 45
degrees height and it will keep distance between target
and the launcher in 20 meters.

For the rocket:

1. You will start from buying a big bottle of est, duct
tape, color spray and a hard paper. For the bottle,
we change the size of it for several times, and we
think the bottle with 1 litre. perform the best
compare to others.
2. Roll the paper into shape of cone, and use tape to
shape it carefully which fit to our rocket. And before
we put the cone on to the bottle as the nose, we
add some weight inside the corn to increase the
weight of our rocket, because if we dont add it, than
the rocket will be way to light and be blow by the
wind during the launch.
3. We used to make some fins and add on the rocket,
but after several try, we found out the fins will make
the rocket stuck on the launcher, and lead to a
unsuccess launch. So we decided to not put the
fins, and make the rocket look just like a bullet,
which may helps to fly much more far than the one
without streamline.
4. Lastly, we decorated our rocket into red with the
colour spray, which dont really have a meaning or
help anything, but just for a good looking.

For the launcher:

1. At first, we have to gather a bunch of PVC tubes
then a flat wood.
2. Next, cut the PVC tubes into two tubes. The length
of it is 35 cm each.
3. Next, glue two tubes on the flat wood using hot
glue. But the gap of the two tubes must be apart
about 5-7 cm.
4. Wait for 2-3 hours for the launcher to dry up for the
glue. If you want to make it dry faster then you can
put it under the sun.
5. Last but not least, when the tubes are completely
stick on the flat wood. Then you can design the
launcher to make it look unique.
Data

Analysis of Data

It shows that we failed to reach the target of 20

meters long which is disappointing. however, our best
performance in this project is 26 grams of baking soda
and 400 millilitres of vinegar which create a distance
between the rocket and the launcher at 6 meters.
The reason why our rocket doesnt reach 20 meter is
because our rocket doesnt have wings and too little
baking soda. In the 1st and 2nd trial, we use a bottle
which average of 45G. However, we decide to decrease
both baking soda and vinegar because of insufficient
equipment. The 3rd one seems perfect because it reach
to 6 meters which in the 4th trial, we decide to add some
more but because of the factor that the cork is too tight
which make a chemical inside stuck there and didnt
make any reaction.

Conclusion

The rocket did not reach the target because of human

error and environment error. The human errors are there
are not enough time for one person doing all of the
work, there isnt enough baking soda and vinegar that
make the rocket does not fly and lastly is the design that
we did. We did not attach the wings to make it wind
resistance. Environment error is sometimes there are
wind that blew our rocket far far away and the wind blew
too strong that make the rocket fly backward.
Recommendation
- Everyone in the group should work in a group to
make the rocket success
- A rocket should have the tip or the point and the
wings are nessesary
- If the rocket is too light, should put more vinegar
and baking soda to make it go farther.
- If the weather is too windy, should wait for the wind
to breeze down or make the wings more stronger.
Or should do the experiment in sunny day.
- Should prepare more than rocket just in case the
other rocket is not useable.
