Jevin Riven
essentially talks about connection between the Bible and homosexuality, and how people
use the Bible to diminish the community. The main argument in this film is the constant
debate between the people of the church and how they think that people in the LGBT
community are damned to hell for being gay. It additionally shows how different
extremely fundamentalist Christian families reacted to when their son or daughter came
out to them. A couple of concepts that I recognize from class are sexuality and gender
roles. Sexuality and homophobia play an immense portion in this documentary. I will be
explaining the concepts of sexuality and homophobia since they play a great part in
society.
This documentary covers many parts and aspects of the relationship between the
Bible and the homosexual community. Two main arguments or points that I felt that stuck
out the most is whether the Bible accurately says that the relationship between a man and
a woman, and whether being gay is a choice or you were born that way. In the Bible the
main book that most people bring up is Leviticus chapter twenty. The main verse is If a
man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an
abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them (Leviticus
20: 13). It is brought up because it says that a man laying with another man like you
would if he were a woman is a sin and they should be put to death. In old times it was
taken very seriously and people were killed if they were caught. The argument against
this passage is that it is very contradicting with other lines in Leviticus that state that you
should not wear clothing made up of two kinds of materials, also it says you should not
tattoo your body. It also says that judging people on their weight or height is a sin. So

these people who bash on gays using the Bible, as a safe goat isnt fair. If they condemn
gay people using the Bible as a reason then they must condemn people who have tattoos
or wear mixed clothing. Another part in the film that gets discussed greatly is the
argument whether being gay is a choice or you were born that way. According to the film
there are multiple researches done by very credible sources that say it is not a choice and
that there is a specific process that the mother goes through during pregnancy. There is
'argue that it is a choice and that people decide to become gay or decide to be un-guy
Classifying people as gay most people think of a man with another man or woman with
another woman, but you have to look at it through a bigger view there are more things
that play into someones sexuality. Its not just sleeping with the same sex. Most gays I
think dont just classify themselves as gay because they like the same sex but because it
is a lifestyle they choose to live. It applies to the film because of the few people that came
out to their parents had been hiding their identity from their parents and felt that they
couldnt be their full selves until they told their parents and once they did that they found
their true identity. When people judge gays its a form of homophobia. Homophobia
doesnt just mean you fear gays it also means that you are at a disapproval of them (Intro
To Sociology). The people in the documentary who are condemning gays are actually
homophobes. They dont explicitly say Im afraid of gays. But they are by saying they
After watching the film my opinions about the arguments made before watching
the film were the same. When it comes to using the Bible as a resource to discriminate
against gays I think it is completely ridiculous. There are so many other verses in the

Bible that say if you do this or that then you are sinning. So if they are condemning gays
for committing sin and saying they are going to hell then I could do the equivalent to
them for wearing clothing with more than one kind of material. They could be sinning for
judging Gods children or being to modest about the fact that they are not going to hell.
There are hundreds of sins that they commit everyday but dont notice because they are
too busy about worrying about other people. Personally I dont have an opinion when it
comes to whether or not being homosexual is a choice or they were born that way. Ive
just heard numerous arguments coming from both sides for me to honestly give an
answer. I dont agree with the people of the church trying to force an opinion on
someone.
The moral of this film I believe is to educate the public on this subject because
people listen by word of mouth and dont do research. This film helped me understand
better and reassure my ideals and my opinions on LGBT. I think God made this earth and
everyone in it with a purpose and reason. I believe that we should just let people live their
lives and if it comes down to it at the end of the road and they dont make it to those
golden gates then so be it. Theres really no room on the earth for fundamentalist
Christians who judge people for their sexual orientation. They should worry about their
own business, and let them do their part in society to make the world a better place.
