ABSTRACT

The World Wide Web, which has started as a document repository, is rapidly
transforming to a full fledged virtual environment that facilitates services, interaction,
and communication. Under this light, the Semantic Web and Web 2.0 movements can
be seen as intermediate steps of a natural evolution towards a new paradigm, the 3D
Internet. The concept of 3D Internet is a goal worth pursuing, the research agenda and
raise interest in networking, security, distributed computing, and machine learning
communities. People who take part in virtual worlds stay online longer with a
heightened level of interest. To take advantage of that interest, diverse businesses and
organizations have claimed an early stake in this fast-growing market. They include
technology leaders such as IBM, Microsoft, and Cisco, companies such as BMW,
Toyota , Circuit City , Coca Cola, and Calvin Klein, and scores of universities,
including Harvard, Stanford and Penn State .

1. INTRODUCTION

The topic 3D internet in web 3.0 is one of the most important technologies world is
looking forward to. Generally, we do our things manually in the daily life, which can
be said to be in the form of 3D. But when it comes to internet we actually using it in
the form of 2D rather than 3D, hence this concept i.e. 3D Internet helps in achieving
that.

3D Internet, also known as virtual words, is powerful new way for you to reach
consumers, business customers, co-workers, partner, and students. It combines the
immediacy of television, the versatile content of the web, and the relationship
building strengths of social networking sites like Facebook. Yet unlike the passive
experience of television, the 3D internet is inherently interactive and engaging. Virtual
worlds provide immersive 3D experiences that replicate (and in some case exceed)
real life.

Second life is one such resource which is implementing the concept of the 3D internet
in its applications. And off late this application has been a great success in the United
States and its expected to affect the internet usage in drastic way.

3. CLI (gopher) GUI (www)
4. Our goals:
Analyse trends
Discuss a research agenda
Raise interest in networking, security, distributed computing, and
machine learning communities

1.1 Web 1.0

Companies publish content that people consume (e.g. CNN). In Web 1.0, a small
number of writers created web pages for a large number of readers. As a result, people
could get information by going directly to the source: Adobe.com for graphic design
issues, Microsoft.com for windows issues and CNN.com for news. As personal

0
3D - INTERNET

publishing caught on and went mainstream, it became apparent that Web 1.0 paradigm
had to change.

1.2 Web 2.0

People publish content that other people can consume, companies build platform that
let people publish content for other people (e.g. Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia, Blogger,
MySpace). Web 2.0 sites often features a rich, user friendly interface based on Ajax,
Open Laszlo, Flex or similar rich media. Web 2.0 has become popular mainly because
of its rich look, and use of the Best GUIs.

1.3 Web 3.0

With web 3.0 application we will see the data integrated and applying it into
innovative ways that never possible before imagine taking things from Amazon,
integrating it with data from Google and then building a site that would define your
shopping experience based on a combination of Google trends and new products. This
is just a random (possibly horror) example of what Web 3.0 application will harness.
Web 3.0 also aims at integrating various devices to the internet, the device include cell
phones, refrigerators, cars etc. Another major leap in the Web 3.0 is the introduction
of the 3D internet into the Web; hence these would replace the existing Webpages
with the web places.

2. THE HISTORY OF 3D TECHNOLOGY

The long history of 3D technology can be drawn the way back to the start of
photography. A new invention by David Brewster in 1844, Stereoscope could take 3D
photographic images. At the Great Exhibition in 1851, a picture of Queen Victoria
taken by Louis Jules Duboscq, using the improved technology became very well
known throughout the world. Soon, the craze for stereoscopic cameras caught on and
these were quite commonly used by World War II. Read on to gather more info on
history of 3D technology.

In the coming years, there were further improvements in the technology, as the history
of 3D technology reveals. Kinematic scope, a stereo animation camera was invented,
followed the first anaglyph movie was produced in 1915. In 1922 the first public 3D
movie, "The Power of Love", was produced and it was in 1935 that the first 3D Color
movie was produced.

As per the history of 3D technology, the use of this technology was to remain latent
for over a decade. The 1950s saw a comeback for the 3D technology. During these
times, TVs had become very popular. By 1950, a number of 3D movies were being
created, for instance, "Bwana Devil",, "House of Wax" and many more. But not all
movie theaters were operational with the 3D technology.

In the 1960s, in the history of 3D technology, a new technology known as Space-

Vision 3D was released. This new technology removed the need to use two cameras to
display 3D movies. The first movie to use this technology was "The Bubble" and the
3D experience still lured in huge audiences.

In 1970, Stereovision, a new 3D technology was developed, which used a special

anamorphic lens that would widen the picture using a series of Polaroid filters. The
first movie to be released in Stereovision was "The Stewardesses". Although costing
only $100,000 USD, it went on to earn an amazing $27 million in North America. By
1980, many more movies in 3d technology were released, like, Friday the 13th Part
III, and Jaws 3-D. In 1986, Canada developed the first 3D movie using polarized

2
3D - INTERNET

glasses, called "Echos of the Sun". In the 1990s, quite recently, many films were
released in IMAX 3D. Some of the most popular were Into the Deep" and , "Wings
of Courage".

In the 2000s, many big studio movies were released in 3D, using the latest HD video
cameras. Some of them are "Spy Kids 3D: Game over", "Aliens of the Deep", and
"The Adventures of Sharkboy Lavagirl,"The Polar Express". In 2010, there has been
a big push towards 3D television. There are channels already displaying educational
shows, animated shows, sporting events, documentaries and musical performances all
in 3D.

The long history of 3D technology still continues. As expected, 3D technology will

continue and expand in the coming years. As the technology matures, prices are
expected to go lower and lower.

4. 3D INTERNET: WHY?

One of the often heard arguments against the 3D Internet is in the form of the question
why do we need it? For most of its users the Internet is a familiar, comfortable
medium where we communicate with each other, get our news, shop, pay our bills,
and more. We are indeed so much used to and dependent on its existence that we
dont think about its nature anymore just like we do not think about Ohms law when
we turn on the lights. From this perspective what we have, i.e. the 2D version, seems
sufficient and the 3D Internet is yet another fad. However, if we stop and think
about the nature of the Internet for a moment we realize that it is nothing but a virtual
environment (cyberspace) where people and organizations interact with each other
and exchange information. Once this fact is well understood, the question can be
turned on its head and becomes why do we restrict ourselves to 2D pages and
hyperlinks for all these activities?

Navigating hierarchical data structures is often cumbersome for large data sets.
Unfortunately, the Internet as we know is organized as a flat abstract mesh of
interconnected hierarchical documents. A typical 2D website is an extremely abstract
entity and consists of nothing but a bunch of documents and pictures. Within the
website, at every level of the interaction, the developers have to provide the user
immediate navigational help. Otherwise, the user would get lost sooner or later. Since
this is a very abstract environment, there is no straight forward way of providing a
navigation scheme which would be immediately recognizable to human beings. The
situation is not any better when traveling between websites. Although the domain
name system is somewhat helpful, using the web today is no different than reading a
telephone directory. Given the current situation the term web surfing is rather
appropriate as we have no control over where the web takes us with the next click.
This has profound implications such as the reliance on back button in browsers which
tantamount to admitting that navigating on the web is no different from a random
walk. Another consequence is the emergence of search engines as a fundamental
element of the Internet. It is no surprise that Google is the most powerful Internet
Company of our times.

7
3D - INTERNET

There is actually a much better alternative way of organizing data which everybody
knows and uses. We spend all our lives in a 3D world navigating between places and
organizing objects spatially. We rarely need search engines to find what we are
looking for and our brains are naturally adept at remembering spatial relationships.
Let us consider the following fictitious scenario on the 3D Internet. Instead of a flat
2D desktop I can put my documents on my desk

The met verses such as SL can be considered as pioneering precursors of the 3D

Internet. Yet, they already indicate its significant business opportunities. Not only
existing online businesses would benefit from the inherent interactive nature and
spatial HCI paradigms of the 3D Internet but also a whole range of businesses such as
fashion, real estate, and tourism can finally start using the Internet effectively. We
expect that the possibility of providing faithful 3D representations of products and
services will have revolutionary effects on online business to business and business to
customer commercial activity. From virtual try before buy to interactive shopping
the commercial potential of the 3D Internet is enormous.

5. 3D INTERNET: WORKING PRINCIPLE

Fig. 5.1: A graphical depiction of the proposed 3D Internet architecture

3D Internet shares the time-tested main principles and underlying architecture of the
current Internet as well as many semantic web concepts. The operational principles
the 3D Internet shares with its predecessor include open and flexible architecture,
open protocols, simplicity at the network core, intelligence at the edges, and
distributed implementation. We adopt here the terms universe, world, and web place
as 3D counterparts of WWW, website, and sub domain, respectively. We describe
each components functionality briefly below:

5.1 World Servers

Provide user- or server-side created, static and dynamic content making up the
specific web place (3D environment) including visuals, physics engine, avatar data,
media, and more to client programs. A world server has the important task of
coordinating the co-existence of connected users, initiating communication between
them, and ensuring in-world consistency in real time. They may also facilitate various
services such as e-mail, instant sagging, and more.

5.2 Avatar/ID Servers

Virtual identity management systems containing identity and avatar information as

well as inventory (not only in world graphics but also documents, pictures, e-mails,
etc.) of registered users and providing these to individual world servers and relevant

9
3D - INTERNET

client programs (owner, owners friends) while ensuring privacy and security of
stored information. Avatar/ID servers can be part of world servers.

5.3 Universe Location Servers

Virtual location management systems similar to and including current DNS providing
virtual geographical information as well as connection to the Internet via methods
similar to SLurl. They can also act as a distributed directory of the world, avatar
servers and users.

5.4 Clients

Browser-like viewer programs running on users computers with extensive

networking, caching, and 3D rendering capabilities. Additional components of the 3D
Internet include web places (replacing websites) and 3D object creation/editing
software, i.e. easy-to-use 3D modeling and design programs such as Sketch-Up and
standardized mark-up languages and communication protocols. Emergence of new
software and tools in addition to the ones mentioned should naturally be expected.

10
3D - INTERNET

6. 3D INTERNET: HOW IT WORKS

6.1 Networking and Distributed Computing

The conventional web caching approaches will not be adequate for the needs of the
3D Internet environment consisting of 3D worlds, which may be hosted on different
observe when interacting with servers is minimized. It has been known from existing
implementations such as SL that high latency incurs low responsiveness and reduced
user satisfaction. Therefore, the network has to be designed intelligently to overcome
these challenges. We propose a hybrid peer-to-peer (P2P) approach to reduce server
load and ensure scalability of the 3D Internet infrastructure. It consists of three types
of communications:
client to server (C2S)
server to server (S2S) and
client to client (C2C)

Each with different latency and bandwidth requirements.C2S communications (see

Figure 5.1 red lines) are bandwidth limited, frequently updated, and synchronous.
Location and activity data as well as use of in-world services will spend substantial
amount of resources both at the client and world servers. The avatar/ID server-client
C2S communications (dash-dotted gray lines) are less frequent and asynchronous. As
an optimization, some portion of this communications can be pushed to the backbone
by facilitating S2S links between ID and world servers (solid gray lines) triggered by
clients and through intelligent caching. Additional S2S communications will also take
place on the backbones. The S2S in the case of universe location servers (dotted gray
lines) are expected to be relatively low load. Improving server independent C2C
(P2P) communication is one of the main solutions to the scalability problems. One
example is the information about avatars in the same space, which can be
communicated more efficiently if exchanged directly between the avatars hosts,
instead of through a central server. When the user moves around other avatars can
send their information as well as of others within the range in a P2P fashion as
depicted in Figure 5.2. For example, the avatars in circle L1 can send information

11
3D - INTERNET

about the ones in L2 and them in turn about L3 as a dynamic intelligent caching
scheme.

6.2 Security and Trust

There is an array of alternatives for enabling the seamless and transparent

authentication of users, avatars, and other objects in the 3D Internet world. The Single
Sign On concept envisages users logging in only once, for example on a web page of
an on-line service, and visiting further services or web-based applications without the
need to log in again. The user can thus experience an unhindered, seamless usage of
services. The key concept behind Single Sign On is federation, denoting the
establishment of common references between accounts or identities in different
repositories or services. Microsoft Passport1 as well as several other systems has been
developed based on this concept. Earlier On, Role Based Access Control (RBAC) had
been devised to allow authentication not based on user identities, but rather based on
the class (or classes) they belong to. The studies are closer to the 3D Internet
paradigm as they focus on challenges imposed by applying RBAC to open, large-
scale systems. Attribute-based access control makes access

Fig. 6.1: Communication scheme on a world in the 3D Internet.

Control decisions based on user attributes and their combinations, allowing more fine-
grained access control. Driven by the users growing privacy concerns regarding the
handling of their authentication information, user-centric identity management
approaches such as CardSpace2 have recently gained popularity. These go beyond the
federation concepts to allow individual users to retain full control over their own
identity management, without requiring the presence of an external provider.

7. THE AMAZING NEW 3D TECHNOLOGY

The new 3D technology, with revolutionary motion control experiences, is already

giving big hints of things to come in the world of gaming and entertainment.
Extremely rich data visualization, interactively explored in 3D space, the next
generation motion control experiences is already here with the new 3D technology.

Theres no denying that the new 3D technology still needs perfection. And people do
notice the pitfalls, for instance, using the 3d glasses can cause an obvious dimming of
the image. Also, simply tilting your head can cause ghosting and color changes in the
image. Several people can suffer headaches and nausea when watching 3D for a long
period. But the amazing new 3D technology overcomes these problems and is the next
big thing in home entertainment.

The new 3D technology by the European researchers can display 3D images at a

monitors full resolution. There is no darkening of the ambient light and no
restrictions on viewing angle. The viewers feel much less strain on the eyes than other
3D technologies. PlayStation Division, Sony Gulf FZE has already announced
groundbreaking new products and services based on amazing new 3D technology.

Confident of delivering deliver consumers unparalleled entertainment options this

year with the latest in 3D technology, gamers can enjoy PlayStation Move and games,
plus blockbuster titles for PlayStation3 (PS3) including infamous 2, Twisted Metal
and many more.

The worlds fist consumer 3D webcam Minoru can help you see your friends and
family for real, in 3D over your favorite messaging program like Windows Live
Messenger, Skype, AOL, OoVoo and many others. One can easily take 3D photos or
even shoot 3D videos with the new 3D technology.

Its incredibly to watch the new 3D technology evolving so fast. Manifesting itself in
the field of entertainment as well education, it would be difficult to contain our
excitement, even if we try.

8. EXAMPLES OF 3D
.
8.1 3D PHONES

If you still haven't dipped your toes but are curious about 3d phones, then you are at
the right place. It was only in a matter of time before we saw the first 3d phone and
its hardly a surprise. Although its availability is limited to a few countries, it wont be
long that we see 3d phone model in almost every hand. Big giants like Samsung and
LG are already trying to incorporate 3D system within some of the newest handsets.

As the 3D technology progresses, more and more content is being developed and
released for these new 3d phones. You will not only be able to play 3D games but also
see videos on your 3D phone without any special glasses. You can find a dedicated 3D
shortcut key on the phone for switching on or off the 3D mode any time you want.

Looking into on how these new 3d phones work, there is something called a parallax
barrier inside the device that produces a 3D image for the users. This exceptional
method directs light to the viewers eyes and it is these light waves that facilitate the
3D picture to be seen on the screen. However, the user needs to be directly in front of
the screen to see the 3D images.

The 3d phone is equipped with a high speed broadband processor, which helps the
user to carry out a number of tasks simultaneously without limiting the performance
of the Operating System or the speed of the phone. A fresh press release for the new
3d phone model features that it can be used for the things like an estate agent taking
you on a virtual tour of a house or even for parents to be able to see their childs home
run in 3D if they missed the game. The 3d phone will be a standout mobile phone and
will shape the future of all mobiles.

8.2 3D Movies In Threaters

3D movies are also called by the names of three-dimensional film or S3D. These are
actually a kind of motion picture that increases the illusion of depth perception. But
how 3d movies work? Well, a 3D movie is basically derived from stereoscopic
photography and a special motion picture camera system is employed to document or
record the pictures as viewed from two different viewpoints or computer-generated
imagery generates the two perspectives in post-production, and special kind of
hardware and/or eyewear for projection are required to provide the illusion of depth
when viewing the film.

New 3d movies are not just confined to feature films that are generally meant for
entertainment purpose and are released in theatres; television program broadcasts and
direct-to-video films have also included similar methods, mainly for the purpose of
marketing. Today you can enjoy 3D movies online or watch 3d movies in theaters.

3D movies have been there in the scene in one form or the other since 1950s, however
they have largely consigned to a niche in the motion picture industry because of the
simple reason being the expensive hardware and processes needed to make and
display a 3D movie along with the factors such as the lack of a standardized format
for all sections of the entertainment business. Nonetheless, 3d movies were mainly
recorded in the 1950s in American cinema, and later get to experience a worldwide
renaissance in the 1980s and '90s driven by IMAX high-end theaters and other
themed-venues. 3-D films became more and more successful throughout the 2000s,
ended in the unprecedented success of 3-D presentations of Avatar in December 2009
and January 2010.

15
3D - INTERNET

Stereoscopic motion pictures or as popularly known as 3D movies can be produced

using different techniques and methods. With time, the level of popularity of
advanced 3D implemented in movie theaters has waxed and waned. Though anaglyph
was sometimes used before 1948, during the early Golden Era of best 3D movies
and cinematography of the 1950s the polarization system was used for every single
feature length movie in the United States, and all but one short film.

At present, the scenario is such that 3D movies are becoming more and more
successful throughout the 2000s, concluding the unprecedented success of 3-D
presentations of Avatar in December 2009 and January 2010.

8.3- 3d Human Anatomy For Learning

Medical professionals have always been trained using human anatomy models. Earlier
these anatomy models were made from wax. Later on industrially manufactured
plastics replaced these models. Modern information and visualization using 3D
technology offers a real alternative to anatomical plastics models. 3D human anatomy
images represent the next generation of anatomy training and the 3D human anatomy
atlas.3D human anatomy images cannot break and do not require any storage space or
a dust cover. The advanced computer technology provides new ways of interaction,
resulting in a more efficient and cost effective learning process for the medical
professional in a shorter period of time.

3D human anatomy atlas can interpret complex concepts into simplified visual
experiences in medical world. It significantly improves the training programs,
academic and commercial instructional. Providing a visual presentation that
disseminates scientific, medical and biological knowledge with highly detailed
anatomical cross-sections, 3D human anatomy conveys medical, biological, scientific,
and other life science topics visually. They improve the impact and knowledge
transfer of research publications.

3D human anatomy images give you detailed 3D models of all major organs and
systems of the human body. With easy to use 3D controls and dynamical search
capability, these applications are usually free online. 3D human anatomy atlas is not

16
3D - INTERNET

only used by med. students, teachers, but anyone who wants to learn more about the
human body. The models are developed by experts with decades of experience in the
fields of medical illustration and biomedical visualization behind them.

3D human anatomy images helps one study the human body per layer, ranging from
skin, blood circulation, digestion track, and all the other body systems. They hold a
vast resource of info on whats organ works for what, and the relationship of each
organ with another organ.

9. SOLUTION OF 3D INTERNET

9.1 Speed

3G is the third generation of tale standards and technology for mobile networking. 3G
networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that evolved to incorporate high-
speed Internet access and video telephony. It is expected that 3G will provide higher
transmission rates: a minimum speed of 2Mbit/s and maximum of 14.4Mbit/s for
stationary users, and 348 Kbit/s in a moving vehicle. Hence, with the introduction of
the 3G technology, the speed implications involved with the 3D Internet would be
solved in the near future.

9.2 Hardware

9.2.1 3D Goggles

Use of 3D goggles is one solution that can be employed to overcome the problem of
the Hardware implications. As we know there is various range of 3D goggles
available in the market, we can select from these wide variety of

3D goggles. And the cost of these goggles is even very less, so this prospect can be
considered in the preliminary stages of the 3D Internet, later on these could be
upgraded with the latest technologies which could be used to implement/ display the
3D data.

Use of Vision Station as a monitor / display for the 3D Internet, Vision Station is a
computer display technology developed by Elumens that provides 180 degrees of

viewing angle for its users. Current computer screens have at most a 50-degree field
of view and needs the user to move the controller in order to see the images that are
not on the screen. This motion is unnatural because in the real world, users use their
peripheral vision to see things beyond the direct line of sight. This new display
technology will address this limitation of standard computer monitors.

9.2.2 3D Mouse

A 3D mouse lets you move effortlessly in all dimensions. Move the 3D mouse
controller cap to zoom, pan and rotate simultaneously. The 3D mouse is a virtual
extension of your body - and the ideal way to navigate virtual worlds like Second
Life.

The Space Navigator is designed for precise control over 3D objects in virtual worlds.
Move, fly and build effortlessly without having to think about keyboard commands,
which makes the experience more lifelike.

Controlling your avatar with this 3D mouse is fluid and effortless. Walk or fly
spontaneously, with ease. In fly cam mode you just move the cap in all directions to
fly over the landscape and through the virtual world

10. APPLICATION OF 3D INTERNET

10.1 Education

3D Internet can be used as a platform for education by many institutions, such as

colleges, universities, libraries and government entities. There are subjects such as
chemistry and English in which Instructors and researchers would favor 3D Internet
because it is more personal than traditional distance learning.

10.2 Religion

Religious organizations can make use of the 3D Internet to open virtual meeting
places within specified locations.

10.3 Embassies

We could create embassies in 3D Internet, where visitors will be able to talk face-to-
face with a computer-generated ambassador about visas, trade and other issues.

10.4 Live Sport Entertainment

Popular forms of live entertainment could also be placed into the 3D Internet. Many
sports allow the users to watch or participate in many popular activities. Sporting
leagues like Cricket, Football, Professional Wrestling, boxing, and auto racing could
be placed in the 3D Internet for its users to play in the 3D environment.

10.5 Arts

The modeling in 3D Internet would allow the artists to create new forms of art, that in
many ways are not possible in real life due to physical constraints or high associated
costs. In 3D Internet artists could display their works to an audience across the world.
This has created an entire artistic culture on its own where many residents who buy or
build homes can shop for artwork to place there. Gallery openings even allow art
patrons to "meet" and socialize with the artist responsible for the artwork and has

even led to many real life sales. Live music performances could also be enabled in the
3D Internet.

11. CONCLUSION

3D Internet, also known as virtual worlds, is a powerful new way for you to reach
consumers, business customers, co-workers, partners, and students. It combines the
immediacy of television, the versatile content of the Web, and the relationship-
building strengths of social networking sites like Face book. Yet unlike the passive
experience of television, the 3D Internet is inherently interactive and engaging.
Virtual worlds provide immersive 3D experiences that replicate (and in some cases
exceed) real life.
