The boot progress indicator is a warranty feature intended to reduce the number of formatter
replacements. Currently, when HP Service and Support engineers visit the field, they do not receive
sufficient information on what is happening during device boot-up. This feature helps both end users and
support engineers to gather information about boot-time activities during device boot-up. End users will
also be able to provide HP Tech Support personnel the boot progress indicator data necessary to help
provide over-the-phone fixes for formatter issues instead of dispatching replacing formatters.
The boot progress indicator divides the boot process into different Stages and Phases. Each Stage and
Phase displays on the control panel and conveys the needed information to diagnose and fix formatter
issues in case the MFP does not boot to Ready state.
2
The fifth and sixth Stages each contain six Phases, represented by A, B, C, D, E, and F.
See the explanations and control-panel screens below for a more detailed illustration of each boot
progress indicator stage and phase:
Stage 1: Power-on
This is the first stage in which RAM is located and tested. It is marked with a 1/6 on the control panel
(see image below).
3
Stage 4 through Stage 6
Stage 4 through Stage 6 is represented from the time the operating system interacts with the firmware to
display messages on the control panel until the LaserJet comes to a Ready state.
A: Hard Disk
B: Nand Flash and USB0, USB1, USB2, and USB3 Initialized
C: RAM0, Firmware Disk Initialized
4
F: Copy Send Application -- CSA Initialized

Troubleshooting Tables
The following General and Product Specific Boot Progress Indicator tables offer troubleshooting
suggestions during the boot process of each specific product. Please remember that there could
always be more than one issue or resolution to the below listed tables. When troubleshooting please
keep an open mind and gather as much info as possible. While booting each process that initiates/starts
may continue to run in the background. These background processes could possibly still interfere during
the boot process and cause a false result when trying to troubleshoot.
