In the context of todays socio-economic problems that the country is facing, how do sexual problems, psychosis,

alcoholism, and drug dependence affect its constituent and the country as a whole?

The Philippines, as far as its socio-economic aspect is concerned, is at a stage of facing

quite a number problems that basically affects and somehow hinders to the progress of the
economy, and the country in entirety. It may be irrational to say that ones personal problems
could contribute to the delay of progress of the countrys economy despite its juvenility in nature,
but it is a given fact that with the continuously growing population of the Filipinos, a single
personal problem of an ordinary citizen could be such a humongous one when everyone else is at
the exact same situation. Personal problems, per se, includes sexual problems, psychosis,
alcoholism, and drug dependence, to name a few.

A sexual problem, or sexual dysfunction, refers to a problem during any phase of

the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction
from the sexual activity. Now, how does it directly contribute to the socio-economic problems of
the country? Since family is considered to be the basic unit of the society, as stated in the
constitution, sexual problems may be considered a factor that basically contributes to the larger
context that slows down the economic progress. Considering the lack of capacity of either one of
the couple to sexually reproduce, it then usually leads to separation, since sexual incapacity is
one strong ground for nullity of marriage and separation. If this instance would occur, the family
tends to be destroyed, and then comes along the turmoil that contributes to the socio-economic
aspect of the country as a whole.

Psychosis, on the other hand, is one basic factor, too, that could worsen the socio-
economic problems of the country. Technically, it refers to an abnormal condition of the mind,
and is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact
with reality". This then could lead the person to be a nuisance to the society. If thats so, he
becomes of no use or of no help to the developments of the country in general. Since he has
mental problems, he then could not be able to find a job, nor to pay his taxes well. By then, he
becomes more of like an expense to the government since he could not contribute financially and
biologically to the general public. This may be too impossible, since there are only a small
amount of person that are medically diagnosed of psychosis, but on a broader perspective, if the
government would not give much emphasis and focus on the problems in the society that often
times trigger this abnormality, then the number of cases would grow, and could drastically affect
the socio-economic factor of the country. And with this move comes another side of the story
which is basically the release of budget in treatment facilities or rehabilitation center where the
diagnosed people will be brought. By this, we could clearly see the domino effect of a single
problem towards becoming a bigger problem.

Although alcohol is not prohibited in the country, it is not new to us that there quite a lot
of people who devote much of their time in drinking, which basically is a risk to an addiction to
it that is often times termed as Alcoholism. Alcoholism is a broad term for problems
with alcohol, and is generally used to mean compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of
alcoholic beverages, usually to the detriment of the drinker's health, personal relationships, and
social standing. It is medically considered a disease, specifically an addictive illness. In
psychiatry several other terms are used, specifically "alcohol abuse" and "alcohol dependence,"
which have slightly different definitions. Since personal relations and social standing are one of
the above-mentioned detriments, we could then come up to an assumption that this, too, could be
a risk of triggering the socio-economic problems faced by our country. How could a person,
under the influence of alcohol, be productive and contributive to the general needs in the society
such as paying taxes, following the implemented rules and regulations, and even to most intricate
details of providing for a living, if he would just be devoting his leisure time to drinking?
Provided that a person suffering from this disorder has a good living, and is able to provide for
himself, isnt it there is quite a shenanigan to the fact that he spends most of his earnings to
purchasing alcoholic beverages just so to satisfy his addiction? One basic result, too, of this
disorder is the social standing of the person to the society, since most of the people under the
influence of alcohol could not be tamed, and are usually uncontrollable and irrational. The
person then involves himself to trouble and would just cause public disturbance.

Similar to alcoholism, drug dependence could also be considered one strong factor that
affects much on the worsening socio-economic problems faced by our country. Drug addiction is
the compulsive use of a substance, despite its negative or dangerous effects. A person may have a
physical dependence on a substance without having an addiction. For example, certain blood
pressure medications do not cause addiction but they can cause physical dependence. Other
drugs, such as cocaine, cause addiction without leading to physical dependence. Tolerance to a
drug (needing a higher dose to attain the same effect) is usually part of addiction. But the factor
that we should look onto is the psychiatric aspect of drug dependence, wherein the person
depends on several other drugs in order for him to be calm, or to be tamed. Now, the question is,
how does this lead to being a factor of triggering the socio-economic problem? Simple. The
legalities of the prohibited drugs comes in the scene, and meddles onto the profits of those who
secretly provides the said medication. Despite the efforts of the government to trace down and
keep track on the tangible spread of prohibited drugs, it is still obvious that the higher-ups has no
control over this underground trade. This mostly affects the economy of the country, since this
kind of business does not pay the necessary public taxes. The rampancy of this business could
not only be problem to the economy, but more so, to the society also, since the users of the
prohibited drugs usually possesses the same characteristics and personality as those under the
influence of alcohol.

In this write up, I came to a profound realization that even the minutest, most intricate
details of a problems that are often times belittled by most of the citizens, could actually be a
social problem that hinders and slows down the road to progress of the country. These are one of
the many socio-economic problems faced by our country at this time, and there more to come. I
could then say that the government should push further and exert much effort in eradicating the
said problems. But the challenge does not only go to the government, being the over-all in
control of the general public, because the citizens of the country should get involved and work
together with the government officials in further solving these problems. After all, it is for the
benefit of the constituents of this country as a whole.
