Course Objective: The goal of the course is to develop an understanding and

ability to use tools to model, analyze, and design/modify mechanical and
electromechanical and control systems to achieve desired behavior in face of
external disturbances.

Course Outline
Feedback systems, Dynamic System Models.
Modeling of mechanical systems.
Laplace Transforms: properties, final value theorem
Electrical, electromechanical systems
Thermal systems, Hydraulic systems, level systems
Transfer functions, poles and zeros, block diagrams.
Midterm Exam 1
Time domain analysis, specifications, transient response.
Stability and Routh criterion
Steady state error. System type
Control of dynamic error: PID control.
Root Locus analysis
Midterm Exam 2
Frequency domain analysis, Bode diagrams

Frequency domain specifications, stability margins

Final Exam

Grading: Students can select between two options

Option 1 Option 2
Two midterm exams: 25 % each Two midterm exams: 27.5 % each
Homeworks 10 %
Final exam 40 % Final exam 45 %

Important Notes:

Students are strongly encouraged to select Grading Option 1. However

duplicate homeworks will be penalized. Submitting 1 st homework means
selecting Option 1, and not submitting means selecting Option 2. This
decision cannot be revoked.

Solve as many problems as you can. This is the only way to learn.

Attendance is expected for all lectures during the semester.

Continuous use of cell-phones in the class will not be tolerated. If you feel
an irresistible urge, you may leave class to check your phone.

Only the students with a valid excuse (medical report, etc.) are eligible to
take a make-up examination. Be prepared to experience more difficult
questions in the make-up exams.

Website & E-mail

ODTUClass will be used throughout the semester. Announcements may be
made via e-mails and it will be assumed that all e-mails related to the
course are read by the students on time. Students should check
ODTUClass and their e-mails on a regular basis.

Academic Code of Ethics

The students are expected to adopt the following ethical values, and behave
according to these principles:
1) Students must do all the work on their own.
2) Students must not cheat or help others to do so.
3) Students must not deceive the academic staff or help others to do so.
Violations of the academic code of ethics may result in disciplinary actions,
ranging between a Warning and Dismissal from the University.
