1 Issues/ Problems/ Events The pupils in my class not familiar in listening and speaking in English. 2 Thoughts And View Regarding The Issues/ Problems/ Events I realised that a majority of the pupils in my class could not understand and respond in English. The pupils found it hard to understand my instructions in English such as read louder, read after me. There were also not much responses from pupils when they are required to answer me in English. This problem was obvious during Q&A sessions. Asking questions is one of the strategies in my English lesson and I discovered that pupils could not understand my questions and could not respond fully in English. They often responded in Malay. 3 Analysis Of Issue/ Problems/ Events 3.1 Causes Low English proficiency Less exposure to English speaking environment Lack of confidence 3.2 Strengths/ Weaknesses Lesson could not be conducted fully in English. 3.3 Predicted Effects/ Outcomes (If No Actions Were Taken) Pupils tend to be dependent on languages other than English. Objective of the lesson failed to achieve. 4 Suggestions To Overcome The Causes/ Weaknesses I tried not to use Malay in my lesson to encourage pupils to speak in English. It was important to bear in mind that it was only during English class that the pupils have the opportunity to listen and speak English so it is our responsibility as English teacher to immerse them in English environment as much as possible. In order to get the pupils to be interested in upholding the level of English proficiency, I need to vary class activities to make my lessons more interesting and fun. I need to conduct activities that encourage pupils to speak in English such communicative games, information gap, role play, round robin and structured dialogues. As a teacher, I need to be a good model for pupils to imitate. I have to make sure I speak English during my lesson and use the correct pronunciation, intonation, stress and rhythmn. Since a majority of pupils in this class are of low English proficiency, I have to encourage pupils who seem speaking English is difficult for them and simplify the task for them when necessary. 5 Timeframe To Overcome The Causes/ Weaknesses Three months (Throughout the practicum period) Teacher Trainee Lecturer Mentor
