Why Greenheck heavy-duty dampers?
From wastewater treatment plants to boiler stacks, Greenheck heavy-duty and
industrial dampers are found in applications throughout the world. Building owners
and engineers rely on Greenheck to provide not only a product, but also the
knowledge and experience to solve todays industrial challenges. Below are examples of how Greenheck has
delivered value to our customers through our industrial solutions.
Wind tunnel This 62-inch (1575 mm) diameter damper was built with two
blades in order to control air more accurately in a test chamber. Greenheck
met the customers requirements by providing and installing the specified
pneumatic actuator, 4-20 mA positioner, and limit switch package on the
damper. As with all heavy-duty dampers, this unit was cycle tested open/
closed and all components tested before leaving our factory.

Construction Features and Options
At Greenheck, our models are the starting point to building your custom solution. We
offer a wide range of options to customize our product to suit your needs. Many of these
options Greenheck offers are listed below, however, if your request is not shown, please consult the factory.
For maximum corrosion resistance, Greenheck offers a wide variety of professionally applied finishes: Hi-Pro
Polyester, Epoxy, Industrial Epoxy, Permatector, High-Temperature Aluminum, and Teflon S.
Blades Several blade options are available to meet different pressure drop and strength requirements in
each damper series. Most blades are offered in the same material, thickness, and coatings found on Greenheck
damper frames.
Rectangular Series (HCD) The standard blade for a HCD damper is the 3-V type, fabricated with three
longitudinal Vs for structural support. For better pressure drop performance at elevated velocities, specify
the fabricated or extruded aluminum airfoil blades available on Greenheck heavy-duty dampers.
Round Series (HCDR) Each round damper uses a single butterfly blade in the airstream. On larger damper
diameters, blades are reinforced to provide the necessary strength to support the blade when in the closed
position. Greenheck can also build round industrial dampers with two opposed blades for greater control
when modulating the damper or to keep the blade from extending beyond the frame.
Backdraft and Pressure Relief (HB and HPR) All of Greenhecks heavy-duty backdraft and pressure
relief dampers use an edge-pivoting blade. Standard construction is the fabricated 2-V blade, which is
strengthened by two longitudinal "V"s, designed for a tight seal when closed and low pressure drop when
open. To complete Greenhecks model line, a fabricated
or extruded aluminum airfoil blade is available for better Blade & Frame Material Continuous Operating Temperature Limits

Construction Features and Actuators
Spark Resistance Construction
AMCA Standard 99-0401 denes fan material performance requirements for operation in hazardous
environments. Greenheck dampers meet the spirit of this standard as follows:
Class A - All materials in the airstream must be non-ferrous. Greenheck modies the damper models HCD-240 &
HB-240, with aluminum frames, axles, fasteners and externally mounted bearings.
Class B or C - Damper blades must be non-ferrous. Greenheck damper models HCD-140, HCD-240, HB-110 and
HB-240, use extruded aluminum blades.
Actuators
Since each application is unique, Greenheck offers a wide selection of actuators for use with our heavy-duty
dampers. Not only can we assist with specifying the right actuator for your project, we will design and fabricate
the custom hardware to mount the actuator to the damper. When specifying an actuator, please take into
consideration the following three items:
Type - Three types available are electric, pneumatic, or manual operation. Below are common options available
for each type of actuator:
Electric- 24, 115, and 230 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz
Pneumatic - 20, 40, 60, or 80 psi (138, 276, 414, or 552 kPa)
Manual - Manual quadrant or worm gear with handwheel or chain wheel
Operation - The two common types of actuator operation are spring return and power-open/power-closed (also
known as double-acting).
Spring Return actuators require power (or air) to move in one direction, while the internal spring will return the
actuator to its initial position. Spring return actuators are common on installations requiring a fail-safe design.
Power Open/Power Close actuators require power to move in both directions. Double-acting actuators are
similar to power-open/power-closed but, refer specifically to pneumatic actuators. Double-acting actuators
require an air supply to turn the actuator in either direction.

Actuator Accessories
Many accessories are available in addition to each actuator selection. Below are
several common options we can provide to customize your solution:
Actuator housings - Actuators are often subjected to hazardous environments during their
operating life. We offer many electric models with housings designed for water-tight and
dust-tight (NEMA 4), corrosion resistant (NEMA 4X), hazardous location (NEMA 7 & 9), and
short-term high temperature (250C for 1 or 2 hours) environments.
Limit switches - Limit switches are available on many actuators, but can be
installed separately to provide positive blade indication. Many limit switch packages are
offered with NEMA 4, 4X, 7, or 9 housings for hazardous environments.
Heater & Thermostat - A heater and thermostat can be used to regulate the actuator
temperature and can prevent condensation from forming on electrical components.
Pneumatic Accessories - Several options are available from Greenheck to control pneumatic
actuators. For two position operation, a solenoid valve (3-way or 4-way, depending on actuator
operation) can be mounted directly to the actuator in various voltages. Modulating pneumatic
actuators use a positioner with a 3-15 psi control signal to control blade position. A pneumatic
positioner can also be fitted with an I/P converter, allowing a 2-10 Vdc or 4-20mAdc control
signal input.

HCDR Series
To complement Greenhecks rectangular heavy-duty control dampers, the HCDR
model line offers an extensive range of round dampers for industrial use. Solid
flanges are formed around the circular frame, providing a rigid base to support the
butterfly style blade. For larger diameters, blades are reinforced with structural
supports to ensure years of operation at elevated pressures and velocities.
Each HCDR is available with EPDM, fiberglass tadpole, and silicone blade seals
to reduce leakage through the damper. Greenhecks HCDR-351 is specially
designed for isolation use, with EPDM tadpole seals providing ultra-low leakage
performance.

HB Series
Greenhecks HB series consist of several models that will meet almost any
industrial backdraft application. Each damper is designed to prevent backflow at
static pressures up to 20 in. wg (4981 Pa). Adjustable counterbalance weights are mounted externally for easy
adjustment and balancing in the field. To meet Spark A requirements, specify Greenhecks HB-240 with all-
aluminum blades, axles, and frames.

HSD Series
For applications where UL555S leakage is required, look to Greenheck's
HSD-401 damper for an industrial solution. Each damper is constructed
with the same flange mount frame as the HCD series, allowing for easy
mounting to a fan outlet. Blades are extruded aluminum, and the damper
is driven by a UL555S qualified actuator.
The Inlet Vane Damper (shown at right) is typically mounted to the inlet flange
of an industrial fan to control the amount of airflow entering the fan. The
parallel blade action of an Inlet Vane Damper directs the airflow into the fan to
modify the fan performance. External Inlet Vane Dampers are used for ducted
applications and those with higher pressure and velocities. Nested Inlet Vane
dampers are built into the centrifugal fan inlet cone. Inlet Box Dampers are
used to isolate fans and to pre-swirl incoming flow. These dampers are very
commonly used in coal fired power plants with dirty flue gas.

Tunnel Ventilation Dampers
Road and underground metro tunnels are some of the most difcult environments
in the world. High humidity, dust-laden air, and limited access can make the installation and operation of
ventilation systems problematic. However, these issues become insignicant in the event of an emergency
the dampers and fans that make up the ventilation system simply must operate when lives are on the line.
Greenhecks tunnel specic dampers, the HTD series, were designed to meet these challenges.
ConstructionGreenhecks HTD series dampers begin with the same ange mount, channel style frame as the
HCD line of products. Two blade proles are offered: the HTD-630 is designed with a fabricated airfoil blade, and
the HTD-640 uses an extruded aluminum blade. Several materials can be used to meet the requirements of each
environment, including galvanized steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel, or aluminum.
ReliabilityIn compliance with NFPA 130 and 502, HTD models are tested in Greenhecks test facility for
operation up to two hours at 482F (250C). Our engineering staff has the experience to perform any additional
tests as required including the cyclic pressure test, mimicking the piston effect caused by passing trains.
MaintainabilityHTD dampers are designed to keep maintenance procedures simple and to a low frequency.
The bearings on an HTD damper are bronze sleeve type, requiring no lubrication or maintenance throughout its
useful life. Linkages are designed for L/360 deection, and are keyed on each axle to allow for easy removal. In
addition, each axle is bolted to the damper blade, allowing for easy removal if repair is needed.
