Task Objective
The objective of the Major Inspection is to determine the condition of the machine, and to restore it to
nominal conditions. The task interval is very strongly constrained by the underlying failure mechanism
data.

Task Content
Major Inspection including disassembly and reassembly should include:

. VISUAL INSPECTION, IN-SITU, AS APPROPRIATE, AND NDE OF ROTATING AND STATIONARY

COMPONENTS. NDE MAY INCLUDE MAGNETIC PARTICLE, DYE PENETRANT, EDDY CURRENT,
ULTRASONIC, BORESONIC
. PERFORM DIMENSIONAL CHECKS OF KEY WEAR COMPONENTS, INCLUDING BEARING,
JOURNALS, SEALS, DIAPHRAGMS, AND ROTATING TO STATIONARY CLEARANCES
. PERFORM ALIGNMENT CHECKS AND CORRECT FOR TURBINE INTERNAL COMPONENTS
. REPAIR STEAM EROSION AND FOD DAMAGE
. RESTORE PACKING AND SEAL STRIPS TO ACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS
. PERFORM MISCELLANEOUS MAINTENANCE TASKS PER GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
. CORRECT ANY ABNORMAL CONDITIONAL REPORTS FOUND PRE-OUTAGE
. CALIBRATE TURBINE SUPERVISORY AND SUPPORT INSTRUMENTATION

Principle Failure Location And Causes:

This task is important for addressing a wide range of degraded conditions. However, the most influential
degraded conditions it addresses are, front standard control rotor wear and shaft driven oil pump
impeller wear ring wear; nozzle block distortion; equalizer valve seat erosion and scaling or stuck air
operator; loose or damaged hardware associated with diaphragms, cracked blade roots, among others.

Progression Of Degradation In Time:

Most of the failure mechanisms mentioned above are medium term wearout mechanisms that can take
3 to 10 years and longer to develop a serious condition, depending on the presence of vibration and
temperature stressors.

Support For The Task Interval And Relation To Other Tasks:

All of the above mechanisms are strong drivers for the 4 to 6 year recommended intervals.
