Outside classroom learning
Experience is the basis of all learning, and higher education
must teach students how to learn beyond the classroom.
Howard A. Berry (1932-1992), the founder of International
Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership (IPSL)
Experiential Learning
Education is to prepare a citizen to live a good life in society.
The existence of higher education is for preparing citizens for
active involvement in community life.
The founding idea of Harvard College in 1963
FOUNDATIONS OF SERVICE-LEARNING
Service-learning program
This learning includes a deeper understanding of the historical,
sociological, cultural, economic, and political contexts of the needs or issues

being addressed (Kendall, 1990).


DEFINITION OF SERVICE-LEARNING
Service-Learning is a form of experiential education in which
students engage in activities that address human and community
needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed
to promote student learning and development

PURPOSES OF AU SERVICE LEARNING
PROGRAM
The students can gain exposure to societal realities outside classroom.
Encouraging students to improve their value system by developing a sense of empathy, social
awareness, responsibility, care, and commitment.

To provide students with opportunity to get to know people from different walks of life and develop a
sense of respect for the dignity of others.

To offer an opportunity for students to understand the injustices in society and to appreciate those
people who have moral courage to struggle for an improvement.

Preparation (1)
Group Forming
You can form the group with others from the different sections and
different lecturers
The group size should be at least 10 persons
The group members should share the same interest
The group members should know how to contact other members in
the case of urgency

Choosing the project (1)
The project requires at least 16 hours for operating
The project should be appropriate to the group size
The project needs to be conducted in Bangkok Metropolitan
Regions, Ayudhaya, Chonburi or Pattaya

All projects requires to have at least 1 project advisor
Advisor could be any lecturer in the university
The project needs to be approved by CPEL (St.Martin Center for
Professional Ethics and Service-Learning)
The project could be the same project with other course (ex MGT2402)
but this needs to be approved by CPEL first
Any project conducts outside Bangkok. The project advisor requires to
go with the students.

Choosing the project (3)
The projects can be one of four sources
University project which is approved by CPEL
Ex. Kabuanboon, Pun Yim, Exposure at Fr.Rays Foundation, AU
Voice for Blind
Universitys club project which is approved by CPEL
Ex. Rotaract, Dog Lovers, Songthang, Preserve
Faculty or majors project which is approved by CPEL
ACCSC, SM, Economics, IBM major, Marketing major
Create your own project which is approved by CPEL
University project which is approved by
CPEL
Pros
You have the proposal of the same project in the previous
semester as the guideline
The project advisor is given to all projects
Cons
Many university projects have the high expense for
transportation and accommodation to other provinces/countries
or rural areas
Have the high probability to work in same group with others
whom you do not know
The schedule is not flexible
Universitys club project which is approved
by CPEL
Pros
The proposal, in most cases, is prepared by the clubs secretary
The advisor is provided to all projects (The project advisor is as the
same person as the club advisor)
It is more convenience to work and contact with friends, in the case
that your friend is the club member
Cons
Some clubs restrict the number of participants due to the clubs
constraint
You have to follow the specific rules of the club
The schedule is not flexible
Faculty or majors project which is approved
by CPEL
Pros
The proposal, in most cases, is prepared by the faculty/majors committees
The advisor is provided to all projects (The project advisor is as the same
person as the faculty/major advisor)
It is more convenience to work and contact with friends, in the case that your
friend in the same faculty

Cons
Some projects restrict that the students need to study in that faculty or major
only
Most faculties restrict the number of participants due to the facultys
constraint
The schedule is not flexible
Create your own project which is approved
by CPEL
Pros
You can form the group to work with anyone you want
You can choose the project basing on your own idea (but it MUST
NOT violate universitys code)
The project schedule is flexible
Cons
You have to write your own proposal without the same project
guideline from earlier semester
You need to find the advisor by your own

program section), I allow to present with your friends from other
sections. However, please inform me in advance if you want to
do it
Nothing is required except the completed project proposal (as
the softcopy not hardcopy)

YOU can choose anyone in your project to be the presenter.
I will choose anyone from the project members to answer the
questions.
If your group cannot answer some questions, that is fine.
If your group cannot answer all question, you might fail the
course.
