PLANNING
FOR POWER
Isotta Fraschini in development of new family of engines
for power generation, marine applications

BY ROBERTA PRANDI

W
ith a long tradition in high-performance en-
gines, mainly for pleasure marine and military
applications, Isotta Fraschini, part of large ma-
rine manufacturer Fincantieri, is developing a
new family of diesel engines for marine and power gen-
eration applications.
Although technical details on the new engines is not yet
available, Isotta CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme was keen
to explain what drove this development and outlined the
companys long term strategy.
Isotta Fraschini is a historical brand with a great tradi-
tion, Gemme said. In recent years, our captive market has
somehow limited the companys growth though.
Both marine and power generation are markets with
large sales numbers and with a few quite big players.
It was not possible for Isotta to keep pace with such a
competitor scenario.
Gemme spent much of his career at turbine manufac-
turer Ansaldo Energia, providing him a solid insight into the
power generation industry. He believes Isottas success in
power generation will be driven by its ability to offer not only
diesel engines, but rather complete diesel systems. The
power generation market will be pivotal in this strategy, es-
pecially the segments for emergency power and electricity
supply for grid balance.
In addition to his position at Isotta Fraschini, Gemme
