Standard Lesson Plan (Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan)
I. Describe the Class
a. There is 25 students in a 7th grade US. History. Out of the 25 students, there is 1
students who have a learning disability, 2 students who are gifted, and there is
also 2 ELL students.
b. The student with the learning disability has Dyslexia. One of the ELL students
speaks Russian and the other one speaks Spanish. Both of the ELL are in their
beginning stages of learning English and so both of them have a translator to help
them better understand the material and the lesson.
II. Subject/Skill:
a. 7th Grade US. History: 50 States presentations
III. Objective(s)
a. The students in the 7th grade US. History class will be able to create a presentation
on one of the 50 states within 2 days of class time.
b. The students will be split up into groups, and each will be able to research an
aspect of the assignment, report to the team mates and collaborate to accomplish
the presentation within 2 days of class time.
c. Given a map of the 50 States of America, the groups will be able to choose a state
to develop the presentation, (this will include a short history of the state along
with a state map, important symbols of the state along with important places,
Famous people and their accomplishments, and interesting facts (at least 10)
about what makes that state special or interesting) within 2 days of class time.
IV. Procedures
a. To begin the entire project will take place within 2 days of class period. The first
day should be dedicated to splitting the class into groups of five students in each
and then have them do research on the part they get assigned. Count the students
off and have them get together for the assignment. Once that is done. Pass out the
assignment instruction worksheet and grading rubric to every single person in the
class. Read the instructions out loud and have everyone follow along.
THE INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD READ SOMETHING ALONG THE
LINES OF:
1. For this project, the teams need to decide on a state to study and
present to the class.
2. Each member of the group will be responsible for a section of the
assignment. The sections include:
a. A short history of the state [present pictures in
PowerPoint presentation] (Answer the following questions
in presentations: How does the state look like? When was
the state annexed to the United States? Under what
conditions, if any? What was going on in history around the
time period the state joined the country? What were some
of the rights the people had or did not have? What are some
recent history facts about the state? )

b. Identify important symbols of the state. [present pictures
in PowerPoint presentation] (Answer the following
questions in presentation: How does the state flag look
like? What is the state bird, flower, tree, and etc., Does the
state have a coat of arms or a motto? What is the state
known for? What is the sports team if any? What are also
some important places to see in the state, and why?
c. Identify some famous people form that state and explain
accomplishment. [present pictures in PowerPoint
presentation] Identify a person and write 4-8 sentences on
what they accomplished. Must have at least 5 important
people for each state (This is for the individual grade).
Only three need to be on the PowerPoint presentation.
d. Identify Interesting Facts. In other words, what make that
state special or really interesting? The student should be
able to find 15 interesting facts about the state. (This is for
individual grade) Only 10 of the facts need to be on the
Power Point presentation.
*Each students is responsible for their own research and their own part of the
assignment. That research will be turned in at the end for an individual grade
grade*
3. On day 2: Everyone in the team will come together and will share
information with each other. Then everyone will be able collaborate to make a
PowerPoint presentation for the class. The presentation is a separate grade, that as
a group everyone will be receiving. Answer the questions under each section or
follow instructions to receive full credit. Each section worth of 20 point (For a
total of 80 points). The individual work will be worth 40 points. The two projects
combined will be worth 120 points. [Make sure to pass out rubric so the students
will be able to see what they need to do in order to get an A on the assignment]

b. The way the assignment is going to work, is 2 people from the team will be
working on the history of the state, 1 person will be working on the important
symbols, 1 person on important people and 1 person on the interesting facts. Each
team member is responsible for their parts and to have accountability, each one
will turn in the work that they each individually researched on for a grade.

c. The first day should be dedicated to the team deciding what they each want to do
their part of the assignment on. Then they will come together and teach each other
about their section of the assignment. Next they will work together to create a

PowerPoint. Everyone in the class will have a google account. That way they each
can work at the same time on the PowerPoint, on different sections.

d. As the teacher, assist in questions and clarifications. Help them keep focus by
reminding them on what they are supposed to be doing, which is research and
making the presentation.

V. Materials
a. Computer lab access (2 class days)
b. Map of the United States
c. Flash drives
d. Grading Sheet Handout Rubric (30 copies)
e. Instructions of the Assignment (30 copies)
VI. Grouping structures
a. The students will be numbered off into 5s. Meaning all the 1s will go together
and be a team, while all the 2s will do the same and so on and so on. In total there
should be 5 cooperative learning groups.
b. The model taken for this assignment is the Jigsaw model. That is where the
students are placed in groups of about 5 students and everyone in the group is
assigned to a specific part of the assignment. Each member then goes and
explores that specific topic assigned. They will then come back together to teach
other. I added an extra part to this assignment. After they teach each other, they
have to work together and cooperate to decide how they are going to present the
material they learned to the class. They should be an expert on the state by the
end of the assignment.
VII. Modifications
a. For the student who has dyslexia, it is important to read the instructions out loud
and provide the worksheet so he could see and at the same time listen to the
instructions. Ask for clarification, and explain again. Repetition helps a lot as well
not only for the student with dyslexia but for anyone else who might also be
confused. The worksheet provided and rubric will be both be in bigger text font,
for him to follow better. A bookmark as an indicator of where the student is can
help as well when following along with the instructions.
b. For the student who is gifted, they will be encouraged by teacher to take on any
section of the assignment. In every section the teacher should be able to ask the
student higher level thinking questions. For example if the student were to take on
history, and the questions was what are some of the things that were happening
when the state got annexed? Then the teacher can ask, How does that differ
from how the state is now? Getting them thinking a little out there and to use
what they already know with what they are learning about.
c. For the two students who are both in the beginning stages of learning English, it is
important to have their translators there to help them understand what he

assignment is asking them to do. The teacher will also come and help around as
much as possible when working on the presentation. On the group they will be
encouraged to take on the Interesting facts sections. Even though they have to get
down 15 facts, with the help of the translator, they should be fine. If they finish
early the translator would be able to help them practice saying the facts when it
comes down to presenting them inform of the class.
VIII. Assessment
a. The students will be graded in two different ways. The work that they will be
doing will be worth 40 points in total. Everyone individually will be able to do
some research and turn it in for credit. The other grade will be the presentation.
The students will all come together and work on putting the presentation together.
Using google dox. The students can each go in and modify the PowerPoint in
their part. That grade everyone in the team will receive it. That part of the grade is
worth 80 points, 20 points for each section. As long as they answer the questions
in the instructions, on the PowerPoint, the grades will be given. Presentation
matters, but not everyone will suffer if a students is not able to speak well in the
group. As long as they do their part and try their best, the credit will be given.
