about their own learning.

assignments

Bridging: Establishing a link between the students prior knowledge and the
material.

learning, peer teaching, and projects
Contextualization: Familiarizes unknown concepts through direct experience.

Examples: Demonstrations, media, manipulatives, repetition, and local

opportunities
Text Representation: Inviting students to extend understandings of text and apply
them in a new way.

Examples: Student created drawings, videos, games, and thinking maps

(graphic illustrations)
Modeling: Speaking slowly and clearly, modeling the language you want students to
use and providing samples of student work.

Know your ELL students and their abilities. Ensure you make tasks manageable and
not overly complex or simple. Set high expectations and scaffold and support their
ability to rise to the challenge. Embed as much personal and multicultural education
as you can throughout the material. Use technology whenever possible as long as it
isnt the end, but the means (websites, blogs, videos, projects, etc.) Allow ELs who
need to explain or use Spanish as support to show they truly understand if English is
too limiting. Use structured class activities and routines with clear expectations at
all times.
