Antifungals

A. Systemic Antifungals
1A. Azole Antifungals
1. fluconazole
Description: Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine. Fluconazole is used to treat
infections caused by fungus, which can invade any part of the body including the
mouth, throat, esophagus, lungs, bladder, genital area, and the blood.
Fluconazole is also used to prevent fungal infection in people who have a weak
immune system caused by cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant, or
diseases such as AIDS.
Dosage: 150 mg orally as a single dose
Route: Oral

2. ketoconazole
Description: Treating fungal infections. It may also be used for other conditions
as determined by your doctor. Ketoconazole is an azole antifungal. It kills
sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.
Dosage: 200 mg orally once a day
Route: Oral

2A. Echinocandin Antifungals

1. micafungin
Description: Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine. Fluconazole is used to treat
infections caused by fungus, which can invade any part of the body including the
mouth, throat, esophagus, lungs, bladder, genital area, and the blood.
Fluconazole is also used to prevent fungal infection in people who have a weak
immune system caused by cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant, or
diseases such as AIDS.
Dosage: 150 mg orally as a single dose
Route: Oral

2. butoconazole
Description: Treating certain fungal infections. It is also used to prevent certain
fungal infections in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. Micafungin is
an antifungal agent. It works by killing sensitive fungi.
Dosage: 100 mg via IV infusion once a day
Route: IV

3A. Other Antifungals


1. flucytosine
Description: Treating serious infections caused by certain fungi. It may used in
combination with another medicine (amphotericin B). Flucytosine is an antifungal
agent. Exactly how it works is unknown.
Dosage: 50 to 150 mg/kg/day orally in divided doses every 6 hours
Route: Oral

2. nystatin
Description: Treatment of fungal infections of the mouth. It may also be used for
other conditions as determined by your doctor. Nystatin suspension is an
antifungal. It works by weakening cell membranes of the sensitive fungus. This
allows the cell contents to leak out and results in death of the fungus.
Dosage: 1 to 2 oral lozenges (200,000 to 400,000 units) 4 to 5 times a day
Route: Oral

B. Topical Antifungals
1B. Azole Topical Antifungals
1. clotrimazole
Description: Treating athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It may also be used
for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Clotrimazole Cream is an
antifungal agent. It kills sensitive fungi by binding to the fungal cell membrane
and weakening it. This allows the cell contents to leak out and results in the death
of the fungus.
Dosage: Apply clotrimazole topical in a quantity sufficient to cover the affected
area and immediately surrounding skin twice a day for 4 weeks, depending on the
nature and severity of the infection.
Route: Topical

2. butoconazole
Description: Treating vaginal yeast infections. Butoconazole cream is an
antifungal agent. It works by weakening the cell wall of sensitive fungi, causing
the cell contents to leak. This kills the fungi.
Dosage: Insert 1 applicatorful intravaginally once a day, preferably at bedtime,
for 3 consecutive days.
Route: Intravaginally

2B. Other Topical Antifungals

1. butenafine
Description: Butenafine is an antifungal medication that fights infections caused
by fungus. Butenafine topical (for the skin) is used to treat skin infections such as
athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm infections.
Dosage: Apply butenafine topical cream in a quantity sufficient to cover the
affected area and immediately surrounding skin once daily for 4 weeks.
Route: Topical

2. tolnaftate
Description: Treating certain fungal infections, such as athlete's foot, jock itch,
and ringworm. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your
doctor. Absorbine Jr cream is an antifungal. It works by blocking the growth of
fungi that cause skin infections.
Dosage: Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.
Route: Topical
