CASEE Lab Syllabus

Course Description

CASEE is an acronym that stands for Curriculum Assistance and Skills for Education and Employment.
The class will focus on improving reading, writing and math skills. Mainly Math Skills Students will also be
given time to complete assignments from other academic classes each day. A final assessment is given at the
end of the semester, for which students will be well prepared.

Classroom Behavior

Be on time for class.


Show diligence. Practice perseverance and determination in completing all of your assignments to the best
of your ability.
Respect yourself and others.
Advocate for yourself. When you need guidance or assistance, ask for help! We want you to succeed!

All school rules are to be followed. Warnings and detentions will be given when necessary, and parents will be
contacted if necessary. Severe discipline problems will be referred to an administrator immediately.

Skill-based lesson and practice
Independent study hall organize materials, work on assignments from other classes, study for quizzes
and tests, and get assistance as needed.

Cell Phone/Electronics Policy

If you are using a cell phone or electronic device when you are not supposed to be, it may be confiscated. It
may be given to the receptionist at the front office. Parents may pick it up at the end of the day. Chronic
offenders could be subject to disciplinary action.

Tardy Policy

Be in class on time. If you are tardy, there are consequences. See student handbook for more information and
consequences.

Absence Policy

A student missing more than eight days of class will not receive credit for the course. A student may file an
appeal for his/her absences at the end of the semester, attaching medical documentation to explain the
students absences. Or they can make up the class time with me.

Grading Procedures

Progress reports will be sent home midway through each nine weeks. Parents should contact us if
progress reports and/or report cards do not arrive on time. Please check grades and assignments online at
any time in PowerSchool. Grades will include: weekly journal grade (due Friday), and curriculum progress.
Curriculum progress is based on your progress in completing assignments from other academic classes
and your progress on studying for your classes. You will receive a rubric (grading system) on how you may
earn a maximum grade for this.
Tutoring Hours

Any student who wants or needs tutoring will need to make an appointment with us in advance to ensure we
do not have meetings scheduled.

Plagiarism/Cheating

Unless we give permission, all assignments are expected to be completed individually. Students may discuss
ideas about the works we study; however, students who turn in other students work and claim it as their own
may receive a zero for that assignment and are subject to disciplinary action.

Skills

We will focus on the following skills during the course of the semester:
Vocabulary - Vocabulary development is an integral part of the learning and reading process. A variety of
sources will be used for vocabulary, including individual students academic work, SAT vocabulary and
ACT vocabulary (national assessments).
Reading Reading fluency will be practiced based on individual education goals. We will use a variety of
literature and informational texts as sources, including academic texts from students specific classes.
Writing communication through the written word is a vital skill for all high school students. Writing
assignments will be assigned throughout the semester based on individual education goals.
Math Math skills will have a focus based on individual class schedules and individual education goals.
Organization - We will pay special attention to organization of materials and organization of time. Each
student is required to maintain organization for all classes. This class will provide time and assistance in
organization if and when needed and based on individual education goals.
Current Events - It is important for students to be aware of current events and to be able to share ideas
with others. CNN Student News is a ten-minute news program targeted towards high school students. After
viewing it in class, we will use discussion questions to promote critical thinking. The news program may be
the starting point for other projects that enhance critical thinking skills.
Special projects Throughout the semester, we will assign other special projects that enhance career skills
and academic success.
We will NOT assign homework that is specific to this class. All assignments are expected to be completed
during a portion of the class period.

Final Exam Information

You WILL have a final exam for this class. Your final exam counts for 25% of your semester grade for this
class. There will be no exam exemptions for any final exam.

Grading Rubric

Daily Assignments 25%; Completed Assignments for Other Courses 50%; Final Exam 25%
