11.0 PAINTING AND DECORATING

Generally
11.1 Brand Names
11.1.1 Except where otherwise specifically described, paints acceptable
for these works shall be those manufactured locally by Harris
Paints, applied in strict accordance with their specification.

11.1.2 All materials used, unless otherwise stated, shall be anti-fungus.

11.1.3 Supply paints on site in sealed cans and all thinning, mixing, etc.
shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

11.1.4 Produce vouchers as and when required by the Engineer prove to


his satisfaction that all materials supplied are genuine and as
specified herein.

11.2 Preparation and Application


11.2.1 Thoroughly dust and clean down all surfaces to be painted, cut
out cracks, stop holes and clean steel work or rust in accordance
with approved practice and include in rates for all such
preparatory labours.

11.2.2 Strain the prepared paint free from skins and similar impurities
immediately before application.

11.2.3 Apply paint by brush, roller or spray with the minimum of


dilution.

11.2.4 Allow to dry and well rub down each coat of paint before the next
is applied and no two (2) successive coats shall be to the same
tint.

11.2.5 No paint shall be applied to a damp surface, and no external


painting shall be carried out during wet weather.

11.2.6 Remove metal furniture and fittings before painting to general


surfaces and afterwards refix.

11.2.7 Include in rates for the work being carried out in such positions
and in such order as shall be directed by the Engineer.

11.2.8 On no account allow employees to empty washings or painting


materials into sanitary fittings or drainage systems. The
Contractor is to provide a suitable receptacle outside the building
to receive same.
11.3 Rendered Surfaces and Fairface Blockwalls and Concrete Surfaces

11.3.1 Rendered surfaces and fairface blockwalls and concrete surfaces


shall be rubbed down with a pumice or flat stone and dusted off to
remove mortar splashes, loose material, grease, etc.

11.3.2 Paint surfaces with one (1) cost emulsion and allow to dry. Fill all
cracks, holes, etc, with a patent filler allowed to harden before
sanding to a smooth finish and applying two (2) finishing coats of
the same emulsion paint.

11.4 Woodwork Painting


Woodwork surfaces shall be sanded smooth and dusted off free of dirt, grease,
etc. Treat knots and resin pockets with one (1) coat of knotting varnish to prevent
bleeding and allow to dry. Apply one (1) coat of wood primer and two (2) coats
of oil paint after which all cracks, holes, etc shall be filled with anti-fungus putty,
allowed to harden before sanding to a smooth finish and applying a final coat of
the same oil paint.

11.5 Woodwork Varnishing


11.5.1 Wood surfaces to receive varnish shall be sanded smooth and
dusted off free of dirt, grease, etc. Fill all cracks and holes with
plastic wood and sand to a smooth finish.

11.5.2 Apply varnishes with a twenty-four hour (24 hr) drying period
between coats. Rub down each coat with very fine sandpaper
before applying the next.

11.6 Metalwork
11.6.1 Ferrous metal surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned with a wire
brush and scraped to remove all rust, scale, dirt and grease, etc,
treated with derusting solution and have all surface irregularities
stopped.

11.6.2 Paint metal surfaces with one (1) coat of primer and two (2) coats
of oil paint allowing at least one hour (1 hr) drying between coats.

11.7 Colour Scheme


Include in rates of all painters' work for varying colours in accordance with the
Engineer colour scheme and also for executing sample panels of the finishing
colours as and when directed by the Engineer. General painting shall not
commence until approval has been obtained.
