UNSTEADYINCOMPRESIBLEFLOWABOUTANAIRFOIL
Whydon'tweworryabouttheairfoilwakeinsteadypotentialflow?Theansweristhatthereisnonetvorticity
insuchawake,asshowninthefigurebelow.Thereisaregionofmomentumdeficitformedastheboundary
layersfromthetopandbottomsurfacesmerge,andifyougoinsidethisregionyouwillcertainlyexperience
shearandhencevorticity.However,lookingfromoutsidethisregion,weseethatthereisnonetvorticityinthe
wake,sincethesenseofrotationoftheupperandlowerpartsofthewakeareopposite.

Inthecaseoftheairfoilsuddenlychangingcirculation,shownbelowthesteadyflowfigure,thewakeindeed
hasanetvorticity,whichmakesitrollupinto"startingvortex".Inthiscase,wecanimaginethatthebottompart
ofthewakehasahighervelocitythanthetop,sothatitcurlsaround.



Whathappenswhenthereisasuddenchangeintheangleofattackoftheairfoil?
Thedownstreamstagnationpointstaysatthetrailingedge(seeNote1below).Thus,theboundcirculation
changesfrom to .Netvorticityisnowseenacrossthewake(seeNote2below).Thewakerollsupintoa
"startingvortex"ofstrength ,whichconvectsat .
