The Skeletal System
Book List:
The Skeletal System - Pebblego
Dem Bones by Bob Barner
The circulatory system carries blood to every part of your body. The heart is a muscle inside your chest.
The heart pulls in and pumps out blood. The circulatory system helps your body stay strong and healthy.
The Circulatory System
Bones have two parts. The outside of a bone is made of hard calcium and other minerals. The inside layers are soft,
like a sponge. These layers make blood. They also store water and minerals.
Glossary Terms
1. skeleton - a structure that supports and protects the soft body of an animal
2. hollow - having an empty space inside
3. layer - a thickness or coating of something
4. tendon - a strong, thick cord of tissue that joins a muscle to bone
5. calcium - a soft mineral needed for strong teeth and bones
6. joint - the place where two bones meet; knees, elbows, hips, and shoulders are joints
7. mineral - a material needed by the body for good health
8. support - to help hold something in place
The Muscular System
Adapted from PebbleGo
The strongest muscle in your body is the jaw muscle. It is small, but it can press your jaw together very hard. It
helps you talk and chew food.
Glossary Terms
1. jaw - a part of the mouth used to grab, bite, and chew
2. organ - a part of an animal that does a specific job
3. contract - to get shorter or smaller
4. fiber - a long, thin threadlike structure
5. muscle - a part of your body that contracts and relaxes to help you move
6. relax - to make or become less tense
7. tendon - a strong, thick cord of tissue that joins a muscle to bone
The Digestive System
Adapted from PebbleGo
Salivary glands pump about three cups of saliva into your mouth every day. Saliva helps break down food. Once
you swallow the food, it takes about 10 seconds for it to reach your stomach.
Glossary Terms
1. digestive system - the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and other parts that break down food and take in
nutrients
2. energy - the physical or mental strength that allows you to do things
3. nutrient - a substance a living thing needs to live and grow
4. saliva - the clear liquid in the mouth that helps to swallow and digest food
5. salivary glands - organs in the body that release saliva, or spit, into the mouth
6. esophagus - a stretchy tube that goes from the throat to the stomach
7. stomach - an organ that stores food, breaks it down, and moves it to the small intestine
8. small intestine - a long tube below your stomach where food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed
9. large intestine (colon) - a tube that pushes waste matter out of the body
The Circulatory System
Adapted from PebbleGo
Your heart never stops pumping blood. It works all the time to move blood around your body. It pumps
all of your blood around your body about 1,000 times each day!
Glossary Terms
1. circulatory system - the heart and blood vessels responsible for moving blood through the body
2. lung - a body part in the chest that animals use to breathe
3. oxygen - a colorless gas in the air and water that animals need to breathe
4. nutrient - a substance a living thing needs to stay healthy
5. artery - a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to other parts of the body
6. blood - a liquid that the heart pumps throughout the body
7. blood vessel - a tube that carries blood throughout the body; arteries and veins are blood vessels
8. heart - an organ that pumps blood through the body
9. vein -a blood vessel that carries blood from parts of the body to the heart
