It was India's 1st jet ghter aircraft indigenously made by HAL way back in 1960. It
was designed by well known German aircraft designer Kurt Tank with the help of
many brilliant Indian engineers. It was equipped with guns, rockets and bombs.

Here is the image when Marut was towed to HAL runway for its 1st test ight.Scene is
like a procession of marriage.

The only weakness(if you call it) was, its maximum speed was 1112 kmph which was
slightly less than sound speed(1234 kmph). And that was only due to its engines,it
wasn't fault of designers. So,theoretically it was a subsonic plane though practically it
wouldn't create much technical hurdles.

(It participated in battles of 1965 and 1971.Remember the decisive Battle of

Longewala ? Maruts were used to give support to Indian border posts. 3 Marut
pilots were awarded Vir Chakra.)

Now the tragedy happens. As a part of organized propaganda, this awesome ghter

was bullied in media, agents of foreign weapon companies and by those corrupt
politicians who wanted commission by purchasing foreign weapons.

The tragedy doesn't stop here. The company which provided the jet-engines oered to
modify the engines to make Marut supersonic but oer was rejected.

Result:

1. Only 3 squadrons got entry in IAF.

2. Kurt tank went back to Germany.

3. The golden chance to make India independent in war-weapons was lost.

4. India became dependent on foreign weapons and technology and thus

victim of power-politics and diplomacy played due to them

5. India started losing valuable foreign exchange and is still losing.

6. Ultimately,India became the biggest weapon importer of world.

#SAD.

It wouldn't be very wise to interpret what media highlights.

Going by the facts, JF17 is an example of low quality reverse engineering by the all
weather friend of our neighbor Pakistan, which no country is ready to buy.

Most of the countries, which earlier were considering its purchase have backed out
realizing that it is another Chinese product.

It would be unfair to say, that LCA Tejas is yet to y. Fighter jet development involves
huge investment in R&D, skilled engineers and sucient political will. Indian
scientists from dierent agencies like ADA, HAL have worked hard to realize Tejas,
which is very evident from following pic.

Edit 1: Another closeup view of Naval version LCA Tejas roaring up from aircraft

As the Indian scientists have done most of their job in making Tejas y and the
adequate political will which India has, reected in its leadership of Narendra Modi

and Make in India initiative, Tejas would soon be guarding Indian skies but also of
many other countries.

Edit 2: There is another ambitious project which India and Russia are jointly working
upon. PAK-FGFA is being developed with joint eorts of HAL and Sukhoi Design
Bureau.

It is just a matter of time, India would soon have its own FGFA program.

Who said India is far behind? Actually it is much ahead.

In case of Pakistan they are only building the aircraft and the actual developers were
Chinese. But in Indian case a 4++ generation aircraft is being developed from scratch.
You can compare Pakistan's aircraft building program with our Su-30 MKI program.
And the Tejas program is entirely dierent and it involves developing a complete
aircraft and its majority subsystems here in India. o-course some of the components
were outsourced but the design is ours and we are free to integrate any kind of
weapon systems in to the aircraft unlike Pakistan which may need Chinese help.

When you are developing an aircraft on your own, it will take more time to give an
good result given that India doesn't designed lot many aircraft in the past. Even for
countries which have experience it took more or less same time to develop an ghter
jet which is of 4++ gen.

I hope now you realized India is not behind in aircraft in building and its related
technologies.

And now the reason for why India is way ahead in space technologies...

There was a total ban in place against India(After our rst atomic test in 70s)
with respect to dual use technologies like rocket engines and satellite
components which can also be used in Ballistic missiles. After the 1974 and
1998 Indian nuclear tests there was a strict ban maintained by US and its
allies that didn't allowed any dual use technologies to be sold to India. When
Russia was ready to transfer the technology for cryogenic engines which is
required for ISRO's GSLV, USA eectively vetoed the deal and nally Russia
ended up just selling a handful of fully built cryogenic engines which
powered most of ISRO's GSLV ights until now.

The same case applied for Indian spacecrafts built by ISRO. There were no
foreign help available so we have no choice other than we have to develop on
our own. As there was no foreign lobby and bribe money involved, we
succeed with ying colors with Mangalyaan to Mars in rst attempt being
the latest example!!

Written in indian media is what their foreign parents ask them to do, It will happen
every time when there is a defence project and Indigenous projects will be scuttled
every time that congress comes to power. But lets discuss on

JF17 vs LCA :

JF17 is an example of reverse engineering . The countries, which earlier were

considering its purchase have backed out .But the best part about JF-17 is China
itself does not uses it , in fact it uses the J-10 and not the JF-17.

Aircraft Comparison Results

LCA Tejas vs JF-17 Thunder

Pakistans JF-17 V/S Indias LCA-Tejas; Comparison With Latest Figures

Indias Tejas versus Pakistans JF-17 Thunder: Dont even compare, say experts

About JF17 :

While Pakistan and China claim there aircraft as indigenous and result of 50-50
partnership between China and Pakistan, there are lot of foreign companies and
organizations involved in making it a success. After the U.S and European companies
cancelled their participation in the development of the westernized Chengdu J-7
variant known as Super 7 which is openly based on MiG 21 design, China launched a
program to develop an indigenous evolution of this Mig 21 based design. which was
named as FC -1 (Fighter China 1)

To expedite its development, in 1998, China National Aero-Technology Import and

Export Corporation (CATIC) purchased the abandoned Mikoyan MAPO Izd 33 design,
research and test information and data along with other research and technical
assistance which was developed under Project 33. This doesnt mean that the design
was now based on Mig 33 or that FC 1 is the continuation of Soviet Project 33.
Looking at the pictures one may say that the JF-17 Plane uses Soviet eras MiG 21
airframe which is highly debatable as given in the below.

JF-17

Mig-21

Mig-29

About Tejas :

MiG-21 formed the backbone of the Indian air force after its introduction is the early
1960s. It was successfully used in combat and was now being built in India to reduce
procurement and operational costs. By the early 1980s, the MiG-21 eet was nearing
the end of its service life and a big shortfall of combat aircraft was forecasted due to
its retirement. Thus a replacement ghter was needed to full ll the combat
requirements of the air force. The jet had to be small so that it couldnt be spotted
easily while being nimble in the air. This requirement was put up after combat
experience in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. In these wars, the notorious Gnat had
earned the title of Saber Slayer for its exceptional record against the F-86

The airframe of this light ghter is made up of advanced composites which allows the
airframe to be lighter thus adding to the total weight of fuel and ordnance that can be
carried. It weighs only 6.5 tonnes when empty while loaded weight is more than
double ie around 14 tonnes. It houses the Israeli EL.M-2032 radar in the nose. This
pulse Doppler radar also nds usage on a variety of other platforms and can be
optimised for a platform specically. It has been successfully deployed on several
platforms including old Mirages and MiG-21s. It is capable of tracking targets both on
the surface and in the air with the detection range for a 5m2 airborne target being
150km. Tejas sports a digital y by wire system, the code for which was tested on an F-
16 in the US before being used on the LCA. The FBW allows the pilot to use his jet to
its best capability without endangering it.

EDIT 1 : Since people below in comment section seems to be interested in why HAL
delays and why we are behind in desi production for Air force? Below are some
designs that were way ahead of their time but dint get response from Government,
say congress government.

Pakistan did not make JF-17

For most Indian its very clear that within a blink of eye to criticize Pak JF- 17, after all
its a Pakistani product . Actually JF-17 is a Chinese product which is assembled in
Pakistan.

JF-17 is a 3rd Generation multi-role combat aircraft. whereas LCA Tejas is

Generation 4++.

Its very clear that India is generation ahead in space technology yet it was dicult
and delayed process due to its engine. There were some political reason too but

https://www.quora.com/WhyisIndianotaheadofPakistaninbuildingfighterplaneswhileIndiaiswayaheadinspacetechnologyetc 9/32

engine was the main concern.

Kaveri engine was originally intended to power production models of the LCA Tejas
ghter. Failure of Kaveri engine led DRDO in 2014 to shut down the engine project.
In 2007, a follow-on order for 24 F404-IN20 engines to power the rst operational
Tejas squadron was issued.

The aircrafts structure is composed of 42% carbon bre composites, 43%

aluminium alloy and the remainder titanium alloy. Earlier this year, the aircraft
participated in its rst foreign show at the Bahrain International Air Show 2016
where aircraft enthusiasts compared it to Pakistans JF-17 Thunder, that was
produced with the help of China.

I dont know how you believe that indian technology is behind pakistan.

refer below links..

India was developing planes since 1960s. 2nd thing JF17 is not even third generaton
plane made by chinese engineers for pakistan. point is why china is not even using
single piece of JF17. Chinese desin with russian engine with chinese weapons and
radar. only god knows how pakistan contributed in making of JF17.

Indian is having composite elements in tejas where JF17 is having aluminium which
is very old technology. JF17 doest beats indian 2nd link defence aircraft tejas in
comparison either.

The question is based on a lie. The lie being India is not ahead of Pakistan in building
ghter planes. Let me state why.

Pakistan is NOT building ghter planes. It only has one dummy to show for an
"indigenously built", the JF-17. Even in case of JF-17, most of R&D was done in at
Chengdu Aircraft Corporation in China (which was again a rip-o of a Russian
design). Chinese being a smarter lot, they made Pakistan bear nearly half the
development cost just for including the name of PAC as joint developers. Reality is
Pakistan got nothing to contribute in the development of the plane. Pakistan
merely assembles some parts in China and possibly does the paint job as per the
requirement of it's air force.

According to independent observers HAL Tejas is superior in many ways:

Tejas' y-by-wire system is far superior to that of JF-17

Tejas also has better G-limits, which enables it for better movements in a
dogght

Tejas can y at night and kill enemies. JF-17 can't.

Tejas can y in all weather conditions, JF-17 can't.

Tejas is equipped with precision targeting system, JF-17 can't target precisely.

Tejas has low radar prole, JF-17 is will be detected easily and killed
comfortably

Compared to Tejas which is very decent 4.5 gen ghter plane, JF-17 is merely
something that can y and stay in the air for a while. Tejas on the other hand is
already an all weather, day/night ghter and is being readied for operating from all
kind of platforms in all kind of situation.

In fact, after Bahrain Air Show, where JF-17 pulled out fearing direct comparison
from Tejas, Tejas garnered generous praise. Many countries that were looking for a
cheap ghter plane are now giving up the temptation of cheap Chinese junk for
something that can really kill enemies. Tejas is going to be a go to plane for many 3rd
world countries in the time to come.

https://www.quora.com/WhyisIndianotaheadofPakistaninbuildingfighterplaneswhileIndiaiswayaheadinspacetechnologyetc 12/32
1/13/2017 WhyisIndianotaheadofPakistaninbuildingfighterplanes,whileIndiaiswayaheadinspacetechnology,etc.?Quora

As for "being exported to other countries", that's another blatant lie. Only one
country has "shown interest". There is no conrmed sales in pipeline. Besides, the
country showing "interest" is wary of China. What if China refuses to supply spares
later?

No such problem will arise if countries buy Tejas. India has an impeccable record of
loyalty and cooperation. India also has a reputation for enjoying great rapport with all
super powers of the world except China. India also is entering the era of great
cooperation with greatest world power in defense area. This will only make India a
global super power of military hardware manufacturing.

Pakistan only has a JF-17 to show o. Indian already has Tejas (multiple variants,
HAL LCH, Sukhoi T50 PAKFA in advanced development/testing stages. It is highly
inappropriate to claim Pakistan is ahead in ghter plane manufacturing.

Fighter jet technology is very dierent from space tech.Jet engines are more complex.

Now 1st talk about JF17

JF17 is failed aircraft in today's warfare.jf17 can't ght with our su30mk1 ,MIG29, tejas
mk1A

If war happens Pak will not send it's jf17 to ght with India's sukhois.
Jf17 is fully made by Chinese. And It is a copy of mig21,One more interesting thing is
China didn't buy any of these aircraft .

You said you read jf17 is being exported ??

Pak said Sri Lanka is buying jf17 but Sri Lanka denied it .Sri Lanka is interested in
tejas.
.
One more thing pak defense budjet is 8th times less than ours.but However they
managed to get half of aircrafts in number in PAF. These shows their quality. IAF buys
only best onces.
.
I dont want to compare tejas and jf17 as many have already shown.all knows tejas is
way ahead of jf17.
.
HAL ,ADA and DRDO is developing tejas mk2,AMCA.
AMCA will be 5th gen. stealth aircraft and mostly available only after 2030 for series
production.
I agree that Indian ghter jet programs are running late .
Tejas mk2 will be inducted after 2023-25.
Pakistan is not ahead of India in any technology

Edit:

I mentioned jf17 is junk and failed aircraft My answer is strength by recent crash of
jf17 killing pilot.

Edit 2:

One more step towards indigenization

DRDO ties with French engine manufacturer Snecma for reviving Kaveri engine so
that it can power mk1A version.DRDO sets trial in next 18 months. This will help in
mk2 project but mk1A project will be delayed once again.

Well, First of all People have to understand that Pakistan did not build JF-17. Yes it is a
joint venture on paper but all that Pakistan contributed in the development of this
aircraft is money. And that's about it. Pakistan only assembles the parts that are
exported to them by China. And India on the other hand has already come up with an
aircraft that is a decent 4th generation aircraft. And we have no shame in accepting
that a good percentage of aircraft is imported. However percentage of exported
materials comes down heavily once you have achieved the basic know how of the
aircraft designing which we have nailed (pretty much). We have designed a Delta
winged 4Th generation fuselage (the basic structure) with composite material that
keeps the plane light and fast and far more manoeuvrable.

Now According to me your real question was " Why can't India develop an aircraft
when it can send missions to Mars". Well the answer, believe it or not, is that it is
rather easier to send a man to the Moon than to design an aircraft. Not that I am
saying Mars mission was a mean feat and I salute our scientist for this successful
endeavour. However If you think about it, A Space shuttle red in a good sunny day
will get out of earth atmosphere in relatively no time and once you are in space it is
almost the same between earth to the Mars. And it is kind of dicult for Space to
throw sudden surprises like our atmosphere does. Now an aircraft like Tejas should be
able to withstand tests in cold atmosphere of Leh and laddakh, and a hot and dry
climate of Rajasthan and Hot and Humid climate of chennai and should be able to
withstand sudden storms and all.

And also it is not as dicult for ISRO to get assistance from NASA, as it is for DRDO to
get from say Lockheed Martin. In fact, unlike the prior case, Foreign Defence
Establishments do there level best to delay or deny any indigenous accomplishment
as it feeds into there prot. And trust me one of the major reason for delay in LCA

https://www.quora.com/WhyisIndianotaheadofPakistaninbuildingfighterplaneswhileIndiaiswayaheadinspacetechnologyetc 14/32
1/13/2017 WhyisIndianotaheadofPakistaninbuildingfighterplanes,whileIndiaiswayaheadinspacetechnology,etc.?Quora
Tejas' development was not only our lack of know how but also Foreign arms lobby
lling the pockets of our Defence Acquisition Council, bureaucracy and HAL ocials.
That's why in most of the cases the specications are changed on the 11th hour of the
tests. Like it happend with Augusta Westland Chopper scam.

Edit: Guys, I do agree with the fact that comparing MOM to Tejas is like comparing
Apples to Oranges. They are both dierent elds that need two completely dierent
types of Skills and Knowledge premises. However my answer was in context of the
Question, hence, the comparison. By no means I meant to belittle our Mars mission or
any other achievements of ISRO, for that day I was as happy as our scientists in ISRO
were. And celebrated that day like i celebrated Flight of TEJAS at Baharein
international Aero Show.

Thanks for A2A. Actually the Jf 17 thunder ghter produced by pakistan aeronautical
complex is a result of joint collaboration between china and pakistan. China has a big
aerospace industry developed by copying and reverse engineering erstwhile soviet
union/Russian aerospace products. It is china which has made design , machines ,
training to pakistanis. Jf 17 is a rejected MiG design which china has obtained illegally
, which they always does. Then chinese had carried out certain modication infusing
F 16 design upto a extent and then made it available to pakistan. On the other hand
LCA Tejas is a complete indian design. It is designed by Aeronautical Development
Agency. You can go through my answer Mitu Kumar's answer to How good is LCA
Tejas compared with other ghter jets in its category?.
So it is not at all ironical . Pakistan hadn't made any ghter jet it is china which has
made Jf 17 ghter. Pakistan has to take chinese permission to produce it or sell it
other countries. You can think of about the lethality of jf 17 that even Chinese hadn't
inducted it into their Airforce and Pakistan didn't send it's jf 17 in Baharain airshow
2016 because of the participation of LCA Tejas( Pakistan had sended it's jf 17 to various
other airshows including previous year's Bahrain airshow but in all of these airshows
Tejas didn't participate). So you yourself can speculate the repower and lethality of jf
17.

rst of all ,

Tejas is not the counterpart of JF 17 . Tejas is completely developed in Indian without

any collaboration with foreign company while JF-17 is jointly developed by pak and
china .There is not a single ghter developed ingenuously by Pak .So in that case
Indian is ahead of Pak in building ghter planes. Also tejas is LCA aircarft while JF-17
is MCA aircraft . Also do you know that India is among 5-6 countries which is

I don't think such is the case. Most of Pakistani ghters are o Chinese origin which
in turn are copy cat jets from either Russia or US (for more reference do read my blog
The Chinese Air Force (PLAAF): MADE IN CHINA? ). So the Pakistanis are not
ahead of us.Now speaking of general space advancement as compared to ghter jet
technology. India was denied access to various technolgy related to space and rockets
after out Nuclear test. While ghter jets were easily available for sale.

Hence the government never really concered home built jets, due to easy availability
of better foreogn jets, while we had no other option but to develope our own space
tech hence the output we see today.

Well, previous answers clearly rule out your statement. However, even if there is a
percent of fact holding still, I have just one answer.

Indians are smarter. They know that making arms and ammunitions is ne, but much
of it will be a heritage and a mere tool to terrify the neighbors with power. That's fair
and is required.
But what if the money is invested in space research. India now has it own satellites,
which provide connectivity to the people, using which I and you are using Quora.
Also, other nations have been using ISRO rockets for launching their satellites. That's
money spent on good.
Yup! Guns bring silence, not peace. :)

While its not true that Pakistan is ahead of India in building ghter planes, I am
learning that in todays warfare, ghter planes are not as important as they used to be.

Remember the second world war videos, Hitler and Japanese war planes dropping
bombs and most recently US planes dropping cluster bombs on Torabora. Todays war
wont resemble that. It is missile strike rst, missile defence, second strike and
nuclear triad. There wont be any dog ghts in the sky shooting air-to-air at each
others as showing in defence expos. Fighter planes are easy to strike down by cruise
missiles. They no longer have any unique value proposition. They cant carry large
payloads (conventional or nuclear). Stealth is(B2) super expensive (1 Billion USD per
unit) and nobody knows how long their stealth remain in ever evolving Radar
technologies.

Its good to have a sizeable number (100), beyond which there is no return. Even
militants are shooting them down in Syria.

India is way ahead of Pakistan in terms of ghter technology. We have developed ,

produced and inducted an indigenous 4+ generation ghter aircraft Tejas , which is a
generation ahead of chinese developed Jf 17, that Pakistan is assembling with
imported chinese subsystems and components.

One of my earlier answers for readers to help understand Tejas Superiority over JF 17.
Venkatesh Kidambi's answer to Is Tejas or the JF 17 better?

In terms of most aircraft technologies like Aerodynamics, composites , radar,

avionics, digital y by wire , y by light , BVR Missiles, AWACS we are ahead in every
way.

Pakistani Airforce will be blown out of the sky if goes head to head with Indian
Airforce . Sheer numbers and quality of aircrafts, IAF will whip PAFs ass even on a
bad day. For every aircraft that PAF will eld, IAF will be able to counter it with a SU
30 MKI or a MIG 29 UGP. AWACS , mini AWACS , Spyder & Akash SAM systems we are
sorted on our western front, only the eastern front needs to be similarly fortied.

Its not Pakistan that India is worried about , Its China. I would have liked the question
to have been about china , it would have been relevant.

ghter jets which are comparable to the one made by United States or Russia. India

Xiaolong, made in China and then the production was shifted to Pakistan. It is a joint
venture between China and Pakistan. On the other hand, Tejas deadline keeps
stretching on. HAL and DRDO are the most reputed ventures in India for arms
production but the truth is both of the ventures will not able to produce supplies for
Indian army if we go on a war in future. As both are Government rms, corruption is
another problem. ISRO comes under department of space which is governed directly
by prime minister of India while HAL comes under ministry of defense, thats why we
cant compare ISRO with HAL. Plus ISRO got some of the best minds in India. China is
helping Pakistan because it will ultimately help them if any dispute occur in the
future with India. Neither USA nor Russia will come forward to help India to make
ghter jets or any other defense material because it will end the proxy war and a loss
to defense rms in both of the countries.

Let us rst get some of the facts right.

1. JF-17 is not Pakistan's indegenous project. It's main design work was done in
china. Pakistan has merely assembled it. Which is similar to the HAL
assembling Sukhoi 30 MKI. Most of the technologies onboard weren't build
in Pakistan.

2. Most of LCA's parts are made in India. Yes, obviously not 100% indigenous,
but still, majority have been manufactured at home.

3. JF-17 is a 33.5 generation ghter jet uptill Block-2 and the manufacturer
claims of attaining 4th generation specs in Block-3 while LCA Tejas's Mark 1
and Mark 1a version are almost 4th gen ghters, and Mark 2 would be a 4.5
gen ghter.

4. Major disadvantage of JF-17 is its all metal body, which is easy to detect on
radars, whereas Tejas has a body made up of some synthetic alloys and
carbon composites. And experience to build such complex technology
requires a considerable amount of time.

5. Moreover, Tejas is highly maneuverable owing to its Delta wing (with 1 n)

design.

6. Tejas's material makes it secure from most of the electronic wave attacks,
which can harm the inside electronics resulting into complete malfunction
or failure of the systems on board.

7. Tejas has digital y by wire system.

8. Tejas mark 1 is supersonic, while JF-17's block-3 would be supersonic.

I have mentioned this points just because the question demanded a comparison
between the two. Otherwise, one cannot compare them. Because every country
inducts aircrafts according to its needs and those needs, in turn depend on the
doctrine on which their air force is based!

India needed Tejas to replace it's aging eet of Mig-21s and Mig-27s. We needed a
multi-role ghter with a capable naval version to add to our strategic interests.
Moreover, we rst needed to have our hands on an aircraft with a low radar cross-
section and made from alloys and carbon composites, to further capitalize on the
same for a 5th gen aircraft. Pakistan perhaps wanted a quantitative approach to its
eet. So they might have compromised on quality. In addition, their main goal was to
safeguard their own territory, for which, JF-17 is a perfect low-cost ghter.

As far as exports are concerned, as I mentioned, that countries which want a ghter
only to protect themselves, without a wish to attack deep into enemy territory or
without any large strategic interest, would love JF-17 because of its low cost.
Example- Countries from Africa neither need an expensive ghter nor could aord it.
So one cannot compare jets (or any defense equipment for that matter), just based on
exports.

Yes , there have been huge delays in the LCA project. And there are various reasons for
it. Which even include sanctions from the West after Pokhran-2 nuclear tests. But in
the end, it's worth it. An aircraft of the caliber of F-35 Lightning, F-22 Raptor, Sukhoi
T-50,...can't be made overnight. Check history, and you will nd that even USA,
Russia, Britain had to go through a number of aircrafts before building some great
quality ones. They too faced diculties, and delays. But they gained experience, and
one day, were able to manufacture the ones which we today admire.

Similarly, Indias goal is a 5th gen super-cruise capable, stealth jet. We have gained
valuable experience from the LCA project. Now let's hope that we soon have a
prototype up for the AMCA project. (By 'soon' I mean soon in terms of heavy arms
manufacturing ;) )

Jai Hind!!

Actually I would rather interpret this question as why India lacks technology in
making defense equipment whereas we are way ahead in space technology .

The answer to this question is Space Technology programs were lead by ISRO and
these were indigenous developed programs . ISRO from the day of it's inception has
not much of the political inuence because of it's founder members. Also there were
few countries in the world who are running space programs even today

Now after Indian independence , India was more inclined towards Russia as a
strategic partner and help was taken from Russians in the elds of science &
technology after independence . Russian economy mostly run on selling defense
equipment and this is even to this date. So Russia never provided us the defense
technology to manufacture defense equipment .

Now also let us look into the political angle - Congress had developed agents inside it
who had direct contacts with defense equipment agents inside & outside the country .
So directly these agents were beneted hugely in such kinds of deal and thus
beneted their partners in Congress party . Thus congress party created this
ecosystem of agents , foreign suppliers , politicians , bureaucrats etc. and never
framed policies to boost defense infrastructure in India.Even the large corporate
houses like Tatas , Birlas were also not promoted to do so .

Also organisations like DRDO , HAL are also to be blamed for these . Because they also
never came up with ant new technologies in all these years . Even our indigenous
Tejas took so many years .

To sum up when we can make our space equipment like satellites , rockets etc. which
can go up to Mars, Moon why we can't create engines for ghter planes or tanks etc.

Having a Gun is good thing, but most important thing is to know how to re it and
that also with precision.

India and Pakistan both have Fighter Jets, TEJAS is our master piece. JF-17 is a copied

TEJAS is custom made for INDIAN PILOTS, with many changes made on Air Forces
Suggestion so they will soar like a LION in TEJAS.

Just support this Govt in "MAKE IN INDIA" And we will be having the Technology

In terms of capability India is way ahead of any nation. The issue is how the best
brains, designers and implementers within India are engaged and empowered.

Presently, If India has some defense requirement it looks at vendors all over the world
and establishes diplomatic dialogue with the vendor nations and gets what it wants.

If this approach is changed such that tenders (expressions of interests, request for
information, request for quote) for defense needs are oated and let local, both
government and private vendors as well as foreign vendors participate. The defense
needs could be anything from strategic roadmap to design and execution.

I am sure private vendors within India will emerge, we could see equivalents of the
Dassaults, Raytheons, General Dynamics of the world emerge from India.

The main aim of JF-17 was to give Pakistan a ghter which was cheap and did a decent
job. It has no Pakistani R&D. We are not behind them in in my manner. Our LCA is
40% indigenous in content whereas the JF-17 is not even 10%.

First of all mostly ghter aircraft in Pakistan or India are purchased from RUSSIA,
FRANCE or USA, not developed in country.

India is way ahead than Pakistan in Air Crafts, Submarines, Army, Tanks and many
more. Pakistan only have more nuclear bomb than INDIA. Because of India's "No First
use policy". Also Pakistan never revealed how much nuclear bombs they have.

UN allows Pakistan to make nuclear bomb because it is a small country and INDIA is
biggest sub-continent. So we does not needed it very likely.

Apart from that there are various factor behind it. Why Pakistan invest that much in
there defense.

Pakistan is completely dominated by its Army. That's why they never look after there
citizen, education, poverty and others. There are multiple terrorist organization also
exists in Pakistan. So, Pakistan also surviving with terrorism. That's why they needed
there defense system that much strong.

Whereas INDIA is in much better state. We have some small conicts internally so our
police system is good enough to deal with them. For external factors like terrorist
attack we have huge army and latest arms to deal with them also.

There are a few things you need to note carefully before I jump to your specic querry.

India is the seventh largest economy with a nominal gdp of around $2.3 trillion and is
almost nine times that of Pakistan which is around a quarter of a trillion dollars. The
gap is widening at a rapid pace and in ten odd years, India should be twelve times an
economy of its western neighbor.

We have more to lose in terms of losing out in the economic growth if there's tension
at our borders. Pakistan has nothing left to lose anyways. It's a failed economy, a
nation where the state's writ is not run for about half its territory and the army's sole
agenda for its own prowess is a hypothetical state of war Indian nation has waged on
it.

In any case, the prospects of a full blown war is a distinct possibility and the so called
two front war involving the pakisanis and the chinese is a favorite opiated myth
circulated by the fringe military hardliners. The Chinese have more at stake in south
china sea vis-a-vis japan, America and vietnam rather to ght a war with a nation it
trades over $70 billion siding with a failed state.

So, we're really in a position to not run a useless race of arms acquisition with
pakistan. Anyways, our armed forces are much, much better trained and equipped
than theirs.

The solution is peace and not war. You don't ght a war with a suicide bomber
destined to lose trying to stop you from ying high.

India has designed and built LCA which is 4.5 Gen ghter uses composit materials
and Pakistan has no equivalent. India has capabilities to develop avionics and y by
wore system, glass cockpit etc.

JF-17 is Chinese plane produced under license in Pakistan. India has dozens of license
produced models and frankly no one thinks those as Indian achivements.

Some example of planes which are built under license in India.

1. Sukhoi 30 MKI : Russian ghter many times more complex then JF17.

2. Jaguar : UK license produce more then 2 decades ago. Nearest comptetior

Pakistan has F-16 purchased completely built from US.

3. Dornier: Transport planes still being license produced

4. Hawk : UK origin license produced in India.

5. Mig 21 : hundreds of these planes were produced in India and they are end of
lifecycle.

There are denately many more becauae when Governments purcahses a plane they
insist on ToT and license production ( except in case of US built P81 , C130 and other
models procured in limited numbers).

So in summary India is far ahead of Pakistan in aviation and there is simply no

comparison.

But of course you have seen countries/corporations selling weapons, aircrafts, etc.
Importing weapons gives the politicians control over a lot of money and a lot of ways
to divert that money. If India starts developing its own weapons, politicians will have
fewer ways to ll their pockets.

Just something to think about.

India has always been behind in technology areas in terms of time, because we have
invested in R&D and have overcome initial failures in every sector before making a

Our technology is not acquired by y by night operators or received as aid from a

friendly country.

The planes you mentioned have been received by Pakistan as completely knocked

sending coal red power plants to Pakistan which they will dismantle in China by

pointing me to this question.

As brought-out by many writers, I too believe that the indigestible political-funding

Similarly in other equally crucial elds too: India lags behind about 80 nations
because of politicians who rape & molest +/-billion people's undeclared or

Secret Foreign-Funding seems to be the Mantra of political existence in the

lot of rant against this system of secret Kickbacks from defence-deals.

Let us see what happens in near future.

Your question is completely wrong because whatever kind of aircraft Pakistan has

if not from US then they will go even for second hand F16 from other countries

Sometimes strategically it is better to buy ghter aircrafts from western nations than
to build on your own

I remember times during 2000-05, when there was rumor that Pakistan acquired
missile technology with the help of North Korea and china. And gained upper hand
on India regarding missile development.

Shaheen 1 - 900 kms range

Ghauri 1 and Gauri 2 - 1200 kms

Ghaznavi - 300 kms

Made Babur 500 kms range cruise missile with reverse engineering of BGM-
109 Tomahawk cruise missile

India lagged behind as only Ballistic Prithvi 1 (300 kms) was fully functional for the
army. No-one was sure Agni 2 was functional or not and India had no cruise missiles

But if you do not have a R&D, you will ultimately lag behind

Looking today after 16 years.

Operative Missile in India

Prthvi 1, Prithvi 2 and Prithvi 3 - 700 kms

Agni 1, Agni 2 , Agni 3 and Agni 4 - 4000 kms

Subsonic Nirbhay 1000 kms

SLBM - K4 - 3000 kms

Planned - Brahmos 2

Pakistan in last 16 years

Literally Scratching their head , you can count on nger number of new missile test done
by pakistan - two test of shaheen 2, one test of shaheen 3

operative range of Babur cruise missile has increased from 500 to 900 kms.

we can correlate Missile advancement to advance in space technology.

But now coming to point, India is way ahead of building ghter aircraft not only today
but also in the past

1. LCA tejas had rst ight in 2001. After failure of indigenous kaveri engines.
General Electric F404 engines was used and is already in service

2. India is Partnering with Russia to develop 5th generation SUKHOI PAK FA/FGFA
which is based on Russian 5th Gen Plane T50.

3. India is developing Advance Medium Combat Aircraft(AMCA)

US to help India develop engine for Gen-5 ghter

Pakistan is supported by America and China both. America provide him money and
China provide him weapons. But India have a friend whose name is Russia, India can
built world class sukhoi series plane with Russia.

The Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) or Perspective Multi-role

Fighter (PMF) is a fth-generation ghter being developed by India and Russia It is a
derivative project from the PAK FA (T-50 is the prototype) being developed for the
Russian AIr Force FGFA was the earlier designation for the Indian version, while the
combined project is now called the Perspective Multi-Role Fighter (PMF).

The completed FGFA will include a total of 43 improvements over the T-50, including
stealth, supercruise advanced sensors, networking and combat avionics.

Two separate prototypes will be developed, one by Russia and a separate one by
India. The Indian version will be a two-seater for pilot and co-pilot/Weapon system
operators.

Do you know why India is lagging, because indian's as such are lagging.
We have to import milltery standard resisters and capacitors which are building
blocks(forget engines).
DRDO is a defence research and development establishment. You can't expect it to
produce resisters, capacitors, and circuit board. Each component is bought from
outside at very high price.

Pakistan still ahead of India in arms ra ce

Pakistan possesses 120 warheads while India has 110 as of 2013

WASHINGTON: An infographic created by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists reveals

that Pakistan is ahead of India in the nuclear arms race by 10 atomic weapons. While
India has 110 atomic weapons, Pakistan possesses 120.

AskorSearchQuora AskQuestion Read Answer Notifications Aditya

The infographic illustrates the history of nuclear arms procurement and testing in
both countries since they rst tested nuclear weapons just three weeks apart in 1998.

According to the Nuclear Notebook, the testing of nuclear weapons for the very rst
time by both countries in the late nineties displayed a failure on the part of the
international community to fully commit itself to the regulation and control of
atomic weapons despite a general global trend towards the non-proliferation of
these weapons.

The nuclear disarmament movement started gaining momentum in 1987, at which

time the United States and Soviet Union had signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear
Forces Treaty prohibiting the procurement and deployment of intermediate and
shorter-range nuclear weapons with ranges between 500 and 5,500 km.

However, in 1998 when Pakistan and India both tested their rst nuclear weapons, the
United States (US) and Soviet Union were still poor role models as both were in
possession of 10,732 and 14,368 weapons respectively at the time.

The poor adherence to non-proliferation treaties is evident when one recalls that the
United Nations Oce for Disarmament Aairs (UNODA ) started taking notice of
issues related to atomic energy in 1946, passing the First GA Resolution. The
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was formed in 1957 to "ensure safe,
secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology", according to UNODA.

The multilateral Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons entered into

force on Mar 5, 1970 and was followed by the Partial Test Ban Treaty (1963) and the
Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (1996), the latter of which has yet to be
implemented despite being signed in the mid-nineties.

The global proliferation of warhead stockpiles, however, showed an increasing trend

up until 1986 when global stockpiles rivalled 64,099 weapons. The US and Soviet
Union were in possession of 23,317 and 40,159 warheads respectively.

Pakistan has, since 2002, remained at least 10 weapons ahead of India in the arms
race. The last time Pakistans arms rivaled or were less than those possessed by India
was in 1999 when both countries owned eight atomic weapons each.

AskorSearchQuora AskQuestion Read Answer Notifications Aditya
The tragedy doesn't stop here. The company which provided the jet-engines oered to
modify the engines to make Marut supersonic but oer was rejected.

Result:

1. Only 3 squadrons got entry in IAF.

2. Kurt tank went back to Germany.

3. The golden chance to make India independent in war-weapons was lost.

4. India became dependent on foreign weapons and technology and thus

victim of power-politics and diplomacy played due to them

5. India started losing valuable foreign exchange and is still losing.

6. Ultimately,India became the biggest weapon importer of world.

FIRSTLY JF-17 IS NOT BROUGHT BY EVEN A SINGLE COUNTRY. EVEN CHINESE
HAVE NOT INDUCTED SO CALLED BEST PLANE OF PAKISTAN AIR FORCE AND
HAS GOT J-10 INSTEAD.

That was Pakistani propaganda and here is proof which settles all claims. Just three
