1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Use skilled mechanics who are thoroughly trained and
experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with specified
requirements and methods needed for proper installation of work.
B. UV resistance: surface material deterioration does not exceed 0.7 mm after 3 years
of direct UV exposure. (Testing based on standard NF T51-165).
C. Fire resistance: B2 rating based on DIN 4102 - Part 1. These are results of German
flammability testing on cars and building products, where components with a 70 g/l
density are rated B2 when thicknesses exceed 20 mm.
D. Frost resistance: 50 % and 1.5 MPa strain at -30 C based on ISO 844 and DIN 53
421, rigidity of the material increasing with lower temperatures, approaching its glass
transition temperature, which means a higher yield stress under compression.
E. Resistance to nitrates: shows very good resistance after prolonged nitric acid
immersion diluted at 10 % (H+NO3-: strong oxidant). Very good stability even with
respect to ketones (acetone, etc.), to alcohols, esters, mineral oils, alkalis, inorganic
acids and hot water (85 C).

F. The module insulates the substrate and roots effectively against extreme
temperatures (hot and cold).

G.
(natural light orientation of the plants), so the plants are subject to less stress.

2.02 DESCRIPTION

A. The vertical growing system includes HDEPP modules that are ready to be fitted
on the supporting metal frame work, filled with a substrate that has been specially
developed for vertical gardens, using little water and allowing the growing of
perennials. The HDEPP modules will be mounted on a framework composed of
hot dip galvanized or stainless steel U-rails whose dimensions will be determined
by a specialized research consultancy.

B. Planting Module

1. Size of modules: As indicated on drawing and as approved by the Engineer.

2. Maximum water storage capacity: As recommended by the manufacturer

(module + fully saturated substrate + plants).

3. The planting modules should have pre-formed planting cells with an angle of

and any potential replacements. Each module should have specific planting
cells to ensure a required planting density. The planting cells should have a
opening so as to allow pots to be planted without having to break up the clod.
The modules must be composed of HDEPP in order to ensure that the root
system is well insulated against extreme winter and summer temperatures.
The modules must be fully modular in order to allow any work to be carried
out behind the vertical garden.

4. UV resistance: 0.7mm of surface material degraded after 3 years of direct

exposure to UV. (Tested according to NF T51-165)

5. Frost resistance: 50% pressure and 1.5 MPa at -30C according to ISO844
and DIN 53 421.

6. Nitrate resistance: in prolonged immersion, highly resistant to nitric acid

C. Metal Structure

1. Calculations must be carried out for the metal framework to determine the
dimensions of the different elements of the structure and the fixings on the
support that is to be covered (Hilti, Split or equivalent product). The type of
fixing must be suited to the type of support (concrete, breezeblock, etc.).

2. The supporting metal framework for the planting modules must be made up
of individual elements bolted together during on-site assembly. It will be
composed of extruding U-type vertical rails reinforced by U-type horizontal
rails. The tub/support components that accommodate the modules will be
fixed horizontally between the vertical rails. The nature of the metals used for
the structure will be determined according to the atmosphere in which the
vertical garden will be built.

3.
structure.

4. End pieces must be put in place on the side and upper sections, in colours
chosen by the Engineer.

5. A drip channel must be put in place in the lower section of the vertical garden
to collect any potential excess from watering.

D. Planting

1. The plants will be planted manually in the pre-formed rigid cells at

recommended maximum planting density 32 plants/m,. The plants must be
in pots of required size with a maximum diameter of 9 cm to avoid break up
of the root ball when inserted into the cells.

2. The choice of plant range must be determined according to the

etc.) and in agreement with the Engineer.

E. Growing Support Specific to the Vertical Garden

1. The growing substrate should be specifically developed for a vertical position

in order to limit constraints such as compaction, water retention, weight,
drainage, etc. The following properties are required:

a. Dry density: 0.633

b. Maximum water storage capacity: 1.11
c. Water retained at pF1: 490 ml/l
d. Water retained at pF2: 314 ml/l
e. Permeability: 15 cm/s
f. Air content at pF1: 451 ml/l
g. pH: 5.5 and 6.2 organic matter level (% of mass): 4%
h. Water-retention capacity: 40% to 50% (% of volume)

2. Its volume must be 90L/m in order to ensure sufficient volume for the root
system.

3. Its composition must be organo-mineral (30% and 70%) and formed purely of
pozzolana, crushed clay balls, peat and hydro-retainers (reticulated
polymers).

4. Fertilisation of the substrate must be provided by a slow-release fertiliser

watering system.

5. The substrate must also conform to the NFU 44-551 standard.

6. The substrate should be placed in the modules at the same time as the
planting takes place.

7. The substrate must be in full contact with the root ball in order to ensure the
Provision of water to the roots.

F. Irrigation Or Fertigation System

1. The irrigation of the vertical garden will be carried out by an automated

system, which completely manages the watering and fertilisation process,
called
manner.

2. The watering system will be proportionate to the configuration of the vertical

system functions correctly. A water meter will be installed (during the

3. A backflow device installed (during the plumbing works) on the network will
prevent any fertiliser coming back into the system.

4. The system will be divided into two parts:

a. A localised watering system at vertical-garden module level: dripper

Network.
b. A control room near the vertical garden: auto-timer, solenoid valve,
injector, filter, pressure surge prevention, etc.)

5. Each module have 4 dripper , Different lopped networks for each wall
depending on height and pressure should be featured,1.5 bar is required on
the very top of each irrigation network.

6. The dripper network:

Each module of the vertical garden will be watered by a drop-by-drop line,

itself connected to an irrigation station. The implemented drippers must be
set to 2l/h and be self-regulating (such as Ntafim or equivalent) and spaced
at intervals of around 12 cm (but not 15 cm) so as to fall in the centre of each
column of planting cells.

7. The supply line must be made from 25 mm HDPE bar and the dripper lines
from 16 mm PE tubes. The 16 mm lines connected to one another at the
ends to limit loss of pressure.

8. A drainage valve must be put in place on the supply line so that the vertical
garden benefits from the whole duration of watering and from a drainage
valve so the system can be placed in frost protection mode.

9. The number of watering sectors must be determined according to the height

and width of the vertical garden in order to limit loss of pressure and to
ensure consistent and regular watering. Each sector will be fed by a solenoid
valve.

10. The joints used must be compression type (Plasson or equivalent) so as to

allow simple assembly and complete water tightness. The gaps left between
the modules will serve to allow easy access for maintenance of the dripper
lines.

11. Control room: This watering station will control the frequency and duration of
the watering of the vertical garden using an auto-timer or solenoid valve that
may or may not be remote. The control room must be equipped with:

a. a 3/4" water intake (plumbing works), allowing a minimum pressure

of 3 bars at the high point of the vertical garden.
b. a 3/4" water meter (plumbing works)\
c. a 3/4" network backflow preventer (plumbing works)
d. An electrical supply (electrical works) for the auto-timer and/or
remote management system.
e. An outflow positioned beneath the backflow preventer (plumbing
works)
f. low-flow 3/4" solenoid valves (such as Rainbird LFV)
g. an auto-timer
h. a 3/4" pressure regulator
i. a 1%-proportion, non-electric injector, with 0.1% accuracy (such as
Dosmatic).
j.
k. a check valve
l. accessories and tubing in rigid PVC

12. The frequency and duration of watering must be adjusted so as to maintain

substrate humidity at between 25% and 40% all year long. Regular staggered
watering with small quantities of water is recommended for optimal
management. (An example using average climatic conditions: with 4 drippers
of 2l/h per module and watering lasting 2 minutes in the morning and 1
minute in the evening, we use 40 cl per day, or 0.8 L/m/ day and
5.6L/m/week from April to October.)

13. Any dripping from the lower section of the vertical garden will be drained via a
galvanised or stainless steel drip channel. A water outlet (plumbing works)

14 be assembled by an in-house
watering professional.

G. Maintenance

Proper maintenance contract has to supply one year, it should include replacement
of plants, trimming and irrigation system control.
