3 General Maintenance
Instruments and their accessories are generally exposed to dust and dirt.
Each time, before you use them, you should therefore carry out an external inspection of accessible mechanical and optical parts
such as eyepieces, optics carrier, objectives, binocular tubes and accessories and then clean them if necessary.

Dust and dirt have a negative effect on the results of your work.
When the instruments are not in use, you should use the dust covers and dust plugs provided.
In addition to the provisions of these general guidelines,

we recommend to service the Swing arms every 3 years.

1.2.2 Power supply The receptacle module contains 2 fuses and a line filter. The mains switch is illuminated
when it is in on-position, powered by the line voltage. A switched power supply converts
the line voltage to a DC voltage of 24V. The output current is limited to 7.5A.

1.2.3 Processor board General

The processor board manages all motor movements and the current control for the
lamps. Commands from/to the user interface (graphic module with touch panel) are
sent/received via the RS485 bus. The user interface SW and user data are stored on the
processor board. All commands are executed by the processor board, the graphic
module acts just like a terminal. Commands from a connected foot- or hand switch (up to
16 functions) are received via a RS232 interface.
Supply voltages
The regulated 24VDC from the power supply is used for the servo drivers and for creating
the logic supply (5V and 3.3V): A fuse (PolySwitch, 0.5A) disconnects the 24V from the
regulators in case of an over-current.
Servo circuits
All servo circuits are located on the processor board. Zoom and focus are digital servo
loops, requiring encoder feedback from the axis movement. X and Y-axes are driven with
stepper motors.
Lamp driver
The lamp driver delivers a regulated DC voltage for the halogen bulbs. A sense line
detects if a bulb is defective or missing.
SW history
Version 1.0 till February 2007
Version 1.1 from February 2007: improved range in X & Y
SW downloads via service interface
A service port with RS232 interface allows SW upgrades. For future use.

1.2.4 Focus drive The focus is driven by a special DC motor, a linear actuator (25V/2.5A). A separate
encoder is mechanically engaged to the drive. It reads the actual position and feeds it
back to the processor board. The drive position is initialized during start-up by a middle
position switch. It is a light barrier, mounted on the processor board. It indicates if the
drive is below or above of the initialization point (the point is 1/3 below the upper limit).
The range is defined in the SW by a certain value of encoder steps. No adjustments are
required after a motor- or encoder replacement. Upper and lower limit switches, directly
mounted on the processor board, interrupt the motor current in case of an override.

1.2.5 Switch board The switch board contains 2 keys for XY reset and focus reset. 2 LEDs indicate if the
center positions are reached. The board is directly connected to the processor board.

1.2.6 Optics carrier It contains the zoom drive and the lamp housing. Two halogen bulbs are placed on a
quick-lamp-changer. Because of generation of heat there is only a connector board
without electronic components integrated. The bulbs are supplied from the processor
board with a DC voltage between 0V and max. 11,2V.
A DC motor with mounted encoder drives the zoom. At the start up it drives into the lower
mechanical limit for initialization. There are no sensors and no limit switches. The range
is defined in the SW by a certain value of encoder steps. No adjustments are required
after a motor- or zoom replacement.

1.2.7 XY unit The unit is driven by two stepper motors, which are directly powered from the processor
board. The actual position of the X and Y unit is determined by means of the amount of
commanded steps. The range is defined in the SW by a certain value of steps, with some
reserve to the mechanical limit. Each time when the middle position switches (light
barriers) are passed, the appropriate position counter is reset. At the start up each axis
moves to the center position.
The light barriers are mounted directly on the XY board; beside these circuits there are no
other electronic components on the XY board, just connectors.
Description M620 Optics carrier and Focus Tilt
11/2006 GOR-3243 (10/2007 update) 1-4 Doc. Code 10 665 737

1.2.8 Tilt sensor The tilt sensor is mounted in the swing arm. In the most upper position of the swing arm it
closes the contact (max. 3 Ohm). The processor board reads the signal; it releases a reset
for X, Y and focus, the illumination is switched off and the zoom drives to the settled user
value.

1.2.9 Graphic module / General

touch panel / interface This module builds the user interface and consists of the interface board with attached
board graphic module & touch panel. It acts like a terminal for the processor board - commands
from/to the processor board are sent/received via the RS485 bus. User settings and
service functions are operated via the display and sent/received to/from the processor
board.
Graphic module / touch panel
It is a programmable LCD-graphic display with an analogue resistive touch panel. The
display has 240x128 pixel and blue LED illumination. The module requires 5V supply (typ.
210mA). The firmware allows a calibration of the touch panel. Brightness control is
possible via bus commands, but not programmed in the user interface of the M620. The
user interface program is loaded to the module at each start up of the system.
Interface board
The interface board distributes the 24V, coming from the power supply, to the entire
system via the swing arm cable. A regulator creates the 5V, which supplies the graphic
module. The footswitch connector is incorporated to the interface board; the RS232
signals are just wired through to the swing arm cable. The RS845 signals from the
processor are converted to RS232 signals for the graphic module.
Calibration of the touch panel
Due to aging or abrasion a calibration might be required:
1. Keep touch panel pressed while switching on.
2. After the message touch adjustment? release touch panel.
3. Within 1 second press again the touch panel.
4. Follow the instruction (digitize 2 points).
5. Reboot system.

1 Technical Description
1.1 Description
The major function of the base allows an easy transport of the system and a very
manoeuvrability for the fine-tuning of the final position.
It is small and compact, but heavy enough to ensure the tilting stability for the M620
system.
The 4 brakes are parts of the casters and have a diameter which allow to moving the
system easily.
In the base is built in a lock-in position, which makes a correct positioning and
attachment for the column possible.
The column holds the swing arm for the floor system. It is connected to the swing arm
and the base and carries the handrail for the movements of the whole system.

In addition to the provisions of these general guidelines,

we recommend to service the Base/Column every year.

3.1 Base / Column

1.2 Technical description

The X and Y stepper-motors drive spindles moving the X and Y

carriages. Light barriers for both directions sense the end of the
range. The distances between the light barriers, and as well the
center position are stored in the processor board.

When the microscope switches on, the position of the X/Y

carriages is unknown. Therefore the XY carriages drive in one
end position (both XY) and then back to the stored center
position.
