M
agical Mystery Tour. Yesterday. Cant Buy Me Love. Revolution. Back in the U.S.S.R. The Beatles
catalogue goes on and on. The English band is probably the single most beloved group in the history of
music. Comprised of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, the quartet who
hailed from Liverpool emerged on the music scene in the early 60s and changed the face of recorded music, not to mention
the entirety of pop culture.
The Beatles were animated (in Yellow Submarine), documented (Help!), lionized and idolized by millions around
the globe they were a phenomenon. The band stopped performing live in 1966, eventually breaking up in the early 70s
but not without having recorded some of the most iconic and important albums in music history, including Rubber Soul,
White Album and the masterpiece, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
When John Lennon was assassinated outside of his New York apartment building, not only was a musical genius taken,
but for fans, the chance of a Beatles reunion died with him.
This new musical show changes that. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

LET IT BE
Hitting the stage this month at the Harris
Center in Folsom is the Broadway tour, Let It
Be, a musical celebration of The Beatles in a
series of concerts both real and imagined. This
show debuted in England in 2012 at The Prince
of Wales Theatre. Immediately, a record-breaking
smash, it was brought to American audiences
on Broadway a year later. The show features
singers, Neil Candalora (Paul), Michael Gagli-
ano ( John), JT Curtis (George) and Chris
McBurney (Ringo), under the musical direction
of Daniel Weiss.
Let It Be tells the story of the Beatles
through a series of concerts, beginning with their
first performances in Germany at The Cavern
Club in 1962. Over the course of two and half
hours, with 34 to 37 songs, and seven to eight
costume changes, the production recreates a
series of concerts (Act 1) including The Ed Sul-
livan Show, Shea Stadium, Sgt Pepper and the
rooftop of Abbey Road Studios. In the second
act, it becomes an imagined show. What if John
Lennon had not died and they reunited for a
concert around his 40th birthday?
The second act imagines the Beatles if they
had a reunion and got back together and what
songs they might play, like Band on the Run,
Lennons Imagine, things they were were
working on at that time as solo artists, Chris
McBurney, who plays Ringo Starr said. I think
thats kind of cool about this show is that we are
able to show each Beatle as an individual. In the
second act, when we perform the material they
did after the Beatles had broken up and were
able to show their individuality in that way.

IVE GOT A HOLE IN ME POCKET!

McBurney is a graduate of the American Con-
servatory and a veteran of the original Broadway
production. He said it was initially difficult to
master some of the Beatles material.
With Strawberry Fields, that song was
daunting as it was originally two different takes
cobbled together in the studio by George Mar-
tin, the Beatles producer, McBurney said. They
had two different takes and so theres some
different elements to that where its going to be
a little slow on one chord, faster with the other.
We really sort of pride ourselves getting each
little detail of every song so we can get each note
as close to re-creation of each tune.

But you know we work so hard at this that we really are putting the songs under the microscope and really learning each
part. And we practice and practice and we were definitely learning tunes. For me personally, A Day in the Life the fills in
that song that Ringo plays are so inventive and unique that for me it was just a challenge in
trying to interpret some of those fills and now after playing for a long time its secondhand
Let It Be nature to me now but it was quite challenging.

CONTACT: HARRISCENTER.NET Its the songs, he said. The songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney. There was really
no other songwriting team like them. They just had such inspiration, passion, and were so
socially conscience of what was going on at the time and also an unbelievable gift of melody.
If you missed the real thing, this performance comes darn close.
Its the next best thing to seeing the Beatles. Most people never got to see the Beatles play live. They stopped touring in
1966. Or if they did, they couldnt hear the PA due to the screaming girls, McBurney said.
Dont feel like youre too old or too young to enjoy this show. The age of the audience varies with entire families and with
grandparents with their grandkids.
Its really rewarding for us to see. Its a great show for the whole family, he said. Its a generational thing. They span
generations. And I hope they have a newfound respect what for kind of impact the Beatles had on society.

SAUCY DELICIOUSNESS: Sienna Restaurant offers an array of dishes including Ahi Katsu.

After spending his life working in the restaurant industry, Mark Platt decided to open
his own restaurant with his wife, Karoline. Seven years later, their brand is wildly suc-
cessful with four locations.
The Platts opened Sienna, their first restaurant location, in February 2010 in El Dora-
do Hills.
After the building sat vacant for two years, they jumped on the opportunity, as it was
beautiful inside and out, Karoline said.
At first the couple struggled, but they found their way because only a year and a half
after opening Sienna, the Platts opened Land Ocean in Folsom. More recently, they
opened second locations of both restaurants in Roseville Land Ocean in September

your own home. With neutral tones on the walls, chairs, flooring, all the way down to the candle holders, the Platts
said they want their guests to experience a warm and relaxing feeling.
Karoline said it wasnt easy brainstorming a name for the restaurant.
I was looking through a box of Crayola crayons and saw Sienna with two Ns on a brown crayon. When I looked it
up it meant warm and inviting. I thought it was perfect. This is why our restaurants are brown and neutral tones, she
said.
One of the more popular dishes is the skirt streak, which is toped with blue

crowd really enjoys wine. At Sienna, we do
monthly wine dinners, which are paired with a
four-course meal that our chefs create. We are
big winos, so we are constantly tasting wine and
creating a list that is unique and interesting.
Karoline said that one thing they want people
to remember is they are locally owned, not a
chain.
We have been locals in the Folsom and El
Dorado Hills area for 18 years, and we are really
excited about being a locally owned restaurant
group, Mark said.
The couple said what sets their business apart
in the restaurant industry is not only their ap-
proach to restaurant ownership, but that Sienna
is stylistically upscale from design to service, yet
they are a friendly restaurant.
Mark said he loves reading reviews from
customers saying, The staff was very friendly,
and professional, because that is what they
strive for.

V
isconti has been a well-known name within the
Folsom community for almost 25 years.
When Frank Visconti was passing through town
in 1991, he found himself staying here. Leaving behind
the Bay Area restaurants he cooked in, he designed his own
business with his family, funded by his father.
In 1992, Viscontis Ristorante opened a small location at 322
East Bidwell St. Visconti said he started small because he had no
idea how well it would do. Little did he know everyone would love it.
After 18 years, the Viscontis decided to relocate on the growing side of
Folsom at 2700 East Bidwell St. Ste. 700 where there was a larger space as well as a
banquet room, full bar and patio.

THERAPY
SHOPPING
JOLIE BOUTIQUE BEGAN AS A DISTRACTION
FROM CANCER TREATMENT
BY RACHEL ZIRIN | PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN

A
mother-daughter duo has opened a Rodeo Drive-style boutique in El
Dorado Hills that has items you wont find anywhere else.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Nici Dale moved to Cameron
Park to help her mother, Dawn McClenter, go through treatment.
Their therapy was shopping.
There wasnt really anything in El Dorado County that we liked that was also
affordable and cute, Dale said. Instead of looking for places to shop, we decided
to create one.
My grandmother managed a womans clothing
Jolie boutique for 25 years and she passed away from
breast cancer 11 months prior to my diagnosis, so
WHERE: 3905 PARK DRIVE, we took her memory and opened up a boutique.

clothing boutique with great customer service,
Dale said.
Meaning beautiful one in French, Jolie was
the perfect name for Dale and McClenter.
Opened late 2016, Jolie is the new sister store of the original Mirror Mirror that
was located in Cameron Park. After reoccurring robberies and thefts, Dale said it
was the universe telling her and McClenter to create something different and fresh.
We try to be as unique as possible, Dale said. We want to bring things that
youre not going to find in all of the other boutiques. We try to make sure every
piece feels fantastic with a fantastic price.
Jolies main objective is to provide excellent customer service, she said. Not only
do you get a personal shopper, but the luxury of having a glass of wine as well.
It is a way for everyone to chill and have fun, Dale said. We also have beer
for husbands while their wives are shopping. We really want to bring that Rodeo
Drive-type shopping, but not with the price tag.
Dale said her favorite part of her business is styling her customers.
I think, hands down, our customer service sets us a part because we are very
genuine and we want our customers to feel like they are being pampered, She said.
I feel that is kind of a lost thing in most boutiques.

items come and go and are

said she wants to make sure
her customers dont run into
someone else wearing the

else has.
We are really bringing
the spirit of our old store
to El Dorado Hills and all
of the amazing things that
happened there it is just

said.
There shouldnt be rules
as far as fashion goes, Dale
said. I want people to come

TRAVEL

RV CAMPING GAINING POPULARITY

STORY AND PHOTOS BY NOELLE KONRAD | SPONSORED BY CAMPING WORLD

Adventure is calling. Walking into Camping World of Sacramento excites all the senses with the hope that nature and travel are right at
your fingertips. The conveniently located storefront in Roseville, off Interstate 80, primarily focuses RV sales. These range from small tent
trailers to travel trailers to fifth wheels to a rather large selection of class B, C, and A motor homes.
Camping World RV sales have established itself as one of the premier destinations for everything RV related, stated General Manager
Brian Cutts. While this location provides a great selection of RVs, it also has one of the largest service centers, collision and body shops
exclusively for RVs.
Theres more to Camping World than just parts, Cutts added.
Since 1966 Camping World has provided parts, services, supplies and RVs to all who have a love of travel. It presents the opportunity to
connect with nature and link adventure with journey.
In the past the majority of the clientele were retired individuals who had the time to appreciate the mobility an RV would bring. Howev-
er, that has changed. RV living and camping can be for anyone and has grown in popularity with families of all sizes, especially those with
young children.
We sell a lot of RVs with bunk beds, Cutts said. It speaks a lot to who our clientele is.
People assume our customers are all retired folks, But young families are our main clientele said Sales
Manager Andrew Weston.
The more than 12-acre lot has a little bit of everything to meet any specific criteria.
Camping World has a selection of toy haulers for those who like to ride.

MATCHA SMOOTHIE
In keeping with the matcha for breakfast theme, I felt like making something
quick, easy, and Ill just say it: its trendy. The smoothie bowls have become the
popular way of having a morning smoothie and lets just face it, its kind of like
eating ice cream. While smoothies are often very tasty by themselves, there is
something that tricks the mind into thinking youre eating more of a fancy dessert
than anything else. Who doesnt love dessert for breakfast? The other aspect is that
it is aesthetically pleasing. Its true you eat with your eyes first.

thinking behind this secondary structure, the swift action that
operators took to make the most of the drought threatening
their output.
It was critical to keep energy flowing to Sacramento, he said,
so they engineered it on the fly. And all drawn out, too. There
werent computers at the time to do this sort of thing.

A CELEBRATION OF LIGHT
Though this technology required occasional troubleshooting
and created bitter tension between American electrical companies
and though H. G. Livermores gold-rush dreams didnt pan
out the way he planned the Folsom Powerhouse was cause for
celebration throughout the region.
Eventually, the new technology allowed Sacramento to expand
its streetcar coverage and illuminated the city with street lamps.
It brought an alternative to costly coal power, the convenience of
refrigeration to businesses and light to peoples homes.
Thats why this is a historical landmark, Overman said. This
was going from a very rural to a very urban area. It was all about
electrifying Sacramento.
In September 1895, thousands of people from hundreds of
miles away gathered in Sacramento to witness the spectacle. There
were parades and floats, gun salutes and lights strung all over the
capitol. When operators finally flipped the switch in the Folsom
Powerhouse, 22 miles away, the city buzzed to life in a way it
never had before.

three-time Emmy winner,
Louie Anderson comes to
Folsom for one night only.
Anderson who was named one
of Comedy Centrals 100 Greatest
Comedians has been making us laugh
since his TV debut on The Johnny Carson
Show in 1984. Over three decades Anderson
has been a successful stand-up comedian, author
(Dear Dad: Letters from an Adult Child), game
show host (Family Feud), additionally, he created the
Emmy-winning animated series, Life with Louie, and
this year won his third Emmy (Best Supporting Actor in
a comedy) for playing Christine Basket, mother of Zach
Galifianakis in the hit FX comedy series, Baskets.
