Lesson Title: Introduction to Standard English grammar and usage when writing or
speaking using Across Five Aprils

Across Five Aprils is a difficult book to read due to the dialect and that it is categorized
as an advanced grade level 6.6 book. Due to this, the fully online course will require in
class reviews for this learner.

Grade Level: Gifted 5th Graders (QUEST)

I. Goal statement1

Ms. Dukes of Norris Elementary School will increase student engagement and
technical skills in reading and language arts by using a fully online lesson plan to
review Across Five Aprils.

II. General description of assumptions and dependencies

In order for Ms. Dukes to be considered successful in implementing a fully online


lesson plan, students will need the following entry skills and tools:

o Time available for instructional use


o Time available for assignment completion in school and out of school
o Technology support from staff, peers and parents
o Updated technology and bandwidth in school
o Parent buy-in
o Prior knowledge of basic computer and word processing skills
o Typing, Access Internet, Use Microsoft Word

o Adherence to technology policies

To access students prior knowledge of basic computer and word processing


skills, Ms. Dukes will partner with the media specialist to have the students
complete specific tasks. Based on the results, Ms. Dukes will incorporate any
needed skill training prior to the launch of the fully online lesson plan.

III. Learner Objectives and Standards

This course is designed to assist students in their introduction to Standard English


grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Upon completion of this lesson, the students will be able to:

o Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar


and usage when writing or speaking

o Produce complete sentences, recognizing and correcting


rhetorically poor fragments and run-ons
o Use correct capitalization, commas, and quotation marks to mark
direct speech and quotations from a text.
o Spell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed.
o Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and
organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

IV. Activities

Daily activities are structured around these essential questions:


1. How can we develop a writing to inform / explain?
2. Why is revising necessary in the writing process?

How can we develop a writing to inform / explain? activities:


o Students will participate in daily Bellringer assignments
o Students will review assigned reading or electronic resource
o Students will complete online activity with a focus on punctuation and
mechanics when writing (have students put the correct punctuation to
correct a writing sample)
o Students will read and discuss a writing review to address drafting,
ideation, organization and voice
o Students will complete online activity to discuss sentence fluency
based off the instructors read along excerpt from Across Five Aprils

V. Assignments and Assessments

Before launch of course, learners will complete a Pre-Assessment to access entry


skills and complete a lesson on Digital Citizenship.

The results from the pre-assessment will be used to determine what skills need to
be demonstrated in class to be successful in the online lesson.

The Digital Citizenship lesson will be used to bring awareness on how to conduct
oneself online. It will also be posted in the course.

1) Submit 3 truths and 1 lie about yourself. Keep in mind your audience is
Ms. Dukes, the instructor and your classmates. Do not submit anything
that you do not mind others to know. Think about the Digital Citizenship
lesson. If in doubt, dont.
2) Respond to 2 classmates post with the following information. Identify
which fact that you think is a lie and why.

VII. Interactivity and Collaboration

Students will interact with each other online through the lesson specific blog and
discussions posts; as well as in class through open discussions and in class
activities. Collaboration will be in class in order for students to freely brainstorm
and have immediate accessibility to the instructor. The blog will be used as the
Bellringer assignments and progress tracker where the instructor will post an

assignment that will address students comprehension of the reading or address


writing standards. In class, the Bellringer will be addressed to make sure all
students grasp the objective. The instructor will be able to review all the students
posts to gauge what needs to be revisited or built on. The discussion posts will
address reading comprehension. In class discussions and activities will focus on
both reading and writing with the support of peer-to-peer review. I acknowledge
that at times students can teach a topic in terms where another student will finally
get it.

VIII. Use of Technology

Students focus technology tools are Canvas and Kidblog. Activities, Assignments
and Assessment will be completed online. Other technology tools include: laptop,
ipad, notebook, mobile device, and Internet.

IX. Learner Support

Learner support will include the following:

o Online help and tutorial for Blog, in addition to an in-class demonstration
on how to access it and post
o Online help and tutorial for Canvas, in addition to an in-class
