OBJECTIVES Students will understand the complete writing process and be

able to use a checklist to edit


o Brainstorming, Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising,

Editing, and Publishing


Students will be able to analyze how characters traits and

setting define plot, climax, the role of dialogue, and how

problems are resolved.


MATERIALS Colored pencils/Crayons/Markers
Julius the Baby of the World
Blank or Lined Paper
Piece of Technology (iPad or Computer)

W.PR.05.05 Proofread and edit writing using grade-level

checklists and other appropriate resources both individually

and in groups.
INTRODUCTION Today, were going to begin the process of reading the book Julius,

the Baby of the World. Before we read, we are going to make

predictions on what we think is going to happen throughout the store

based on the pictures we see. -Writes predictions- Now that you

have your predictions, lets talk about how you felt when your

parents brought home your baby brother or sister? PAUSE- After

we finish the story, we are going to talk about the characters in this

story and how the setting defines the plot and climax of this story.

Can anyone tell me what the plot of the story is? What about the

climax? Lastly, we are going to talk about how problems are solved
in this story. What is another would for problems that we have

talked about in previous classes?

Tomorrow, we are going to begin writing a story about your siblings.

This will be a lengthy process spread throughout the week. You will

edit with two other people, then edit again individually.

Are you guys ready to jump into Julius, the Baby of the World?!
TECHNIQUES Text Walk
PHONICS/READIN Before reading, go through the pictures of Julius, the Baby

G SKILL/ of the World and have students write down their predictions

STRAGEGY based on the pictures.


Throughout reading, ask questions relating relating to the

setting and plot of the story. (Where is Julius? Where is the

sister? Home?) *Make suggestions if needed


After reading, they will do a story map in groups of 3 or 4 to

determine if they understand how characters traits and

setting define plot, climax, the role of dialogue, and how

problems are resolved.


Discuss the story map.

WRITING Begin writing ideas about your views on your younger

ACTIVITY siblings. If you are the baby in the family, write about your

views on your older sibling. If you are an only child, write

about what you think it would be like to be the oldest sibling

and having a younger sibling come along.


With a partner, discuss your ideas.
Write a paper or a book with your own illustrations.
Begin writing your thoughts on a lined sheet of paper.
Meet with the teachers and discuss your ideas/sentences.
Begin editing in your group of three.
Revisit and edit your own book/paper.
Once this is finalized, begin typing your book/paper.
o If you write a book, make sure you cut and glue your

sentences to the book and color your illustrations.
