Syllabus
Course outline
EE202 is a sophomore-level introduction to signals and systems,
which provides mathematical foundations for communications (e.g.
modulation AM/FM), signal processing (filtering, DSP) and control
(feedback control).
We study continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) signals and
systems with emphasis on linear time-invariant (LTI) systems (e.g. RLC
circuits). The course covers the following topics:

Ch1. Basic system properties (stability, causality, time-invariance, linearity,

memory)
Ch2. Time-domain analysis of LTI systems (impulse response, convolution)
Ch3. Fourier Series for periodic signals (CT, DT)
Ch4. Continuous-time (CT) Fourier transform
Ch5. Discrete-time (DT) Fourier transform
Ch6. Frequency response of LTI system, frequency-selective filters
Ch7. Sampling
Ch9. Laplace transform (CT)
Ch.10. Z-transform (DT)

<7> EE202, Signals and Systems

Signals and Systems
Signal is a function of one or more independent variables
that contains information.
E.g. (physical signal)
Speech/audio signal : air pressure as a function of time
Voltages and currents as a function of time in an electrical circuit
E.g. (abstract signal) stock price as a function of time

For this course: Focus on a single (1-D) independent

variable which we call time.
Continuous-Time (CT) signals: x(t), t continuous values
Discrete-Time (DT) signals: x[n], n integer values only

<8> EE202, Signals and Systems

Signals and Systems
Physical systems are an interconnection of components,
devices, or subsystems.
System is an operator (mapping) that transforms (maps)
an input signal to another signal as an output.
E.g. (processing) Speech cellular phone EM wave
Input signals are transformed by the system
E.g. (responding) Accelerator pedal automobile speed of the
vehicle.
A system responds to applied input signals, and its response is
described in terms of one or more output signals

<9> EE202, Signals and Systems

Signals and Systems
System is an operator (mapping) that transforms (maps)
an input signal to another signal as an output.
We describe a system by its input-output relationship.
- System is fully characterized if y(t) is specied/determined for all x(t).
- Notation: operator T [], y(t) = T [x(t)], x(t) ! y(t)

Input signal System Output signal

A very rich class of systems (but by no means all systems

of interest to us) are described by differential and
difference equations.
