CALCULATIONS FOR ASME CODE SECTION VIII, DIVISION I, 2015 EDITION VESSELS,
This workbook is for Vertical or Horizontal single chamber vessels. Since I have made major changes and corrections to sheets that were from other
sources such as the web, I removed any company references before adapting them to interface with the complete workbook.
My advice is to use this workbook a master and then work in copies only. Making entries directly in sheet may overide formulas.
In addition to the calculations for Code vessels, I have added separators, line heaters, dehydrators, and heater treaters. When you complete the "Operating
Conditions" part of the cover page, information is copied throughout the workbook and most of the calculation are done for you. You may still need to input some
additional information in the worksheet.
The Workbook allows either I.D. or O.D. shells and heads. You must enter either the I.D. or the O.D. on the cover page, but not both.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD PRESS THE "F9" KEY AFTER NOZZLE REINFORCEMENT ENTRIES, Excel has a problem with large workbooks.
You make entries mainly on the "COVER PAGE" and "WORKSHEET" tabs below. Please re-set the reinforcement material to "INHERENT" when not used.
Information is distributed to the calculating page (tabs) and results show on both the "tab" page and "WORKSHEET". Remember to press F9.
The pages are protected to keep the formulas safe, but you can remove the protection to make changes with "Tools". There is no password.
Make your changes (entries) in the "yellow" areas. There are comment flags to help you. You must enter types and thickness for Head A and Head B.
There are drop down selections for the type of head. If you choose "WELD CAP" for head A, the workbook will default to WELD CAP throughout the book.
If needed you can change the Dish and Knuckle radius of the F&D heads. Nozzles are calculated as being in the center 80% of the heads.
If you select "F" for forged shell, the elliptical heads will be treated as forged with no thin-out. Weld caps are caluclated as 2:1 ellipticals with 12.5%
undertolerance applied. Note that the weld cap thickness and shell thickness must be the same and will have the same pressure rating.
There are sheets to compute the thickness required for flat heads and bolt on flat heads based on UG-34 and cones based on Appendix 1-5.
When a Cone is selected as a Head, Head A Nozzle 3 and Head B Nozzle 2 are reserved as a nozzle in the cone's small end or an elliptical head on the cone.
If no nozzle is used in the small end of the cone, a head will be calculated to seal it off. NOTE: The cone long seam efficiency will default to that of the shell.
If you are going to have a CONE, you should fill in the YELLOW areas of the CONE sheet first. Otherwise some flags will pop up.
You may have a shell attached to the small end of the cone by entering the length of that shell in the Shell #2 sheet. You must choose the location of the
nozzles in Shell #1, Shell #2, or the side of the Cone by selecting the location. Head A & B nozzles locations may be located in the head or cone by selecting
the location. If you need more nozzles you can use & copy the "Extra nozzles" sheet. These sheets will not be supported by the WORKSHEET.
Please note that only original shell, heads and nozzles are calculated in the "VESSEL COSTING" sheet since it gets information from the "WORKSHEET" only.
If a material is not listed in the drop down menu, you can unprotect the sheet and change the Data Validation for the cell to "Any" and enter a material.
NOTE: WHEN A CONE IS SELECTED ENTRIES MUST BE MADE IN THE "CONE", "HEAD on CONE", and "SHELL #2" SHEETS IF USED. You must
also enter the distance from the Large Outside Diameter of the cone for nozzles in the side of a cone on the sheet for that nozzle. Tangent or offset nozzles
may be entered in Shell nozzles 2 thru 5, Head A nozzles 1 & 2, and Head B nozzle 1. You must enter the offset on the nozzle worksheet page.
If a swing bolt closure is being used, you must complete all entries in the "Closure" sheet. The closure may be attached to a cone, shell, or nozzle"
Shell #2 and Head on cone may be used as a boot on a horizontal vessel by making direct inputs on their sheets.
Note: You must complete the Cone, Flat head, Shell #2, and/or Closure worksheets before designing the nozzles when they are used.
There are warning flags to help keep you from making mistakes. Remember to tell the sheet when you are using pipe, so it can derate the 12 1/2%.
Please note that 2.375" I.D. and smaller do not require reinforcement calculations, more information is provided at the bottom of the "WORKSHEET"..
Also note that when tangent nozzles are used, if the larger developed opening is greater than 2x the smaller, extra calculations are required.
Note: UG-36 (3)(-c) no two isolated unreinforced openings shall have their centers closer to each other than the sum of their diameters.
Lifting lugs, baseplate, and skirt calculations for vertical vessels are done in the "Tower" sheet. It requires extra entries (see the yellow sections).
Buckling calculations are performed for towers on the Tower sheet. Note that large diameter thin wall horizontal vessels should be analized for buckling also.
To print your results just go to the tabs you need to print and print them. Each tab is formatted to print, page print areas are already set.
For your information, there is a "Material Database" tab. Pipe/flange information is on the bottom of the "WORKSHEET" and in the "Flanges & pipe" tab.
When using an Android tablet you type in the material type like it is found in the material database, the stress value will auto fill (if it is in the database).
Shell external pressure may be calculated using the "SHELL EXTERNAL" tab. You can change the length of the shell to determine how
many re-inforcement rings (if any) are needed. I did not include the ring calculations. You must use the included charts for values "A" and "B".
I have modified the nozzle sheets to zero out left over reinforcement inputs if you forget to delete them on the WORKSHEET when not needed.
There is drop down menu for flanges and couplings in the Nozzle area. For size enter the nominal pipe size, the O.D. will be calculated. Long weld neck and
couplings O.D. and thickness is calculated for you. If you select "OTHER" for Nozzle thickness you will be prompted to enter the nozzle O.D. (in Blue) and enter
the I.D. instead on NPS. Flange pressure ratings are calculated for SA-105N and 316/316L (dual grade) materials only. Note: Flange pressure rating are calculated
from -20F to 600F, above 600F is approximate only. Nozzles are calculated for Shell, Elliptical Head, F&D Head, Elliptical of Weld Cap, and on Cone. Nozzles in
Cone are calculated for information only by this workbook and may not totally comply with ASME Code Section VIII Div, 1. If you select "OTHER", the flange
pressure rating calculations are by-passed. You may use rolled plate or a forging for a nozzle neck by selecting "OTHER" then in the Nozzle sheet change the efficiency.
For couplings larger than 2" please select "OTHER" for the nozzle thickness and enter the pipe O.D. as the I.D. and the coupling O.D. from the coupling chart.
Welding time calculations are for comparison purposes only so you can see the impact of changes in your design. Head seams are included on shells and cones.
WRC 107 Nozzle external loading may be performed for each nozzle. Just select the nozzle from the menu apply the loads and print. If a repad is needed,
you can unprotect the nozzle sheet and add the repad.
Nozzle and flange weights have been added to the nozzle pages. There is a weight overide block that will allow you to insert a fabricated flange weight.
The Flat Head sheet may be used to calculate a self-energizing o-ring flange.
Saddle calculations for large diameter horizontal vessels are done in the "SADDLE" sheet. Wind and Seismic forces are not considered.
The "VESSEL COSTING" tab contains a costing worksheet. It takes information from the summary page and calculates most of the vessel cost.
You will need to make some inputs there. Such as the heat treating, x-ray, painting, and inspection. Most of these are calculated for you, but you review them.
There is a vessel internal area that you can usedouble check to see that the costing makes it to the top of the sheet.
You will need overide pricing for the flanges if long weld necks are used. The spreadsheet calculates RFWN flanges, repads (if any) and nozzle cost based on weights.
Disclaimer:
I strongly suggest that you check the results given by this worksheet. I assembled this information to assist in estimating vessels.
Final design of any vessel should be done with the appropriate software or by a qualified engineer.
All sheets in this workbook have been reviewed against full ASME Code Section VIII Division 1 Edition 2013 and the Edition 2015 summary of changes, ASME B16.5,
ASME B31.3, and/or Megyesy's Pressure Vessel Handbook for accuracy. Please email me at charlesirwin@outlook.com with any comments or complaints.
You can find more useful spreadsheets at www.pveng.com. Some of the sheets here are modified versions of sheets found there.

As thickness is increases so does the risk of brittle fracture; therefore the temperature before impacts tests are required must get warmer.
This is the basis of Fig UCS 66, which plots each material group between MDMT (Minimum Design Metal Temperature) and thickness.
If the MDMT falls below the appropriate material curve (A to D), Impact testing is mandatory.
However if the item is not highly stressed there is less risk of brittle fracture, UCS-66 permits the impact test temperature to be raised
if the full material thickness is not required. If the resulting test temperature exceeds the values in the UCS 66 table, impact testing is not required.
Residual stresses are present in all welded structures and can be up to yield point in magnitude. Whilst these stresses will not cause failure by
yielding, they could drive a brittle fracture. Therefore stress relief is mandatory on thick material that is prone to brittle fracture (UCS 56).
Allowances for stress relief is built into the code rules, but stress relief of any item when its not required will permit an increase in the impact test
exemption temperature (UCS68c).
Welding defects can also cause brittle fracture; therefore when material thickness exceeds a certain limit, full radiography is required. (Table UCS 57).
The toughness of weld metal must also be demonstrated by production test plates, which are mandatory if impact testing is required.
As the strength of the material increases so does the risk of brittle fracture, particularly as thickness increases. Therefore higher absorbed energy
is required from strong materials above a certain thickness. (Fig UG 84.1).
UCS66, UG20, and UG84 MUST be read very carefully before any decision is made concerning impact testing, as both sections contain
many exceptions and exemptions.
