Description of the different levels of contents in P&ID (or D&ID)

Flow sheets:

Shows major principle of the system as described in specification (outline or

contract)

Main equipment as pumps, tanks, engines, heat exchangers, AHU and also some
main valves are indicated as rectangular blocks/valves in order to visualize the
principle of the system.

Only major pipe lines and line sizes, diameter only, are showed.

Only main capacities for equipment are indicated example as: pump flow, heat
exchangers cooling capacity, compressors flow/pressure, and volume of
receivers/tanks.

Basic Design Level 1 (Design Level 1):

Pipes and Ducts with valves and equipment developed from flow diagrams or
after agreed list. Includes all pipes except minor pipes as drains or similar.

Approximately pipe dimensions and equipment sized in accordance with historical

data or some typical vendor information.

Main equipment is tag numbered.

Instruments are not included.

Pipe and valve material summary described in a list.

Basic Design Level 2 (Design Level 2):

Developed P&ID and D&ID with valves and equipment more developed from
Design Level 1. Includes all pipes except minor drain lines in systems

All systems onboard normally included. Document list has to be agreed.

Approximately pipe dimensions and equipment sized in accordance with typical

or makers list vendor information.

Approximately pressure drop and heat load calculation followed up and critical
system as ballast/fire water calculation more developed.

Main equipment is tag numbered.

Instruments are included but not tagged.

Pipe and valve material described in list.

Equipment sizing based on makers list vendors with Largest equipment sizing
principle

Design briefs/basis developed to a level of main function understanding and

major features to be included.

Extended Basic Design level 3 (Design Level 3):

Fully Developed P&ID and D&ID with valves and equipment.

Pipe dimensions and equipment sized in accordance with purchased/final

selected vendor information.

Small instrument pipes not included.

Approximately pressure drop calculation followed up and based on pipe routing

for critical systems. Heat load calculation based on final vendor data.

Final vendor data available.

P&ID completely tagged i.e. equipment, instruments and valves are tag
numbered. Instrument included in vendor delivered unit is not included or
tagged.

Line numbers for pipes are included.

Material list developed with line numbers for pipes, valves and special
equipments (strainers, flow meters etc.).

Design briefs/basis includes description of system with control in such way that it
is a base for the operational manual.
