Imagine a March day 'Up-North' and Wordsworth is out for a stroll and a smoke,
probably deep in pensive thought - And then he sees stretched before him this vast
golden ribbon around the bay! His soul is immediately uplifted!
I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Light and Life
With February gone the cold dark winter months are behind us at last!!
How we have longed (well I have) for the warmer days of Spring bringing
with them light and new life.
We are witnessing massive movements of people around the world,
continuing wars in the Middle East, terrorist acts and threats, Brexit, and
now, to cap it all, Donald Trump!
We all long for a brighter, safer future, but there is so much uncertainty and
insecurity. Is this something new, or has it always been like this? The world
has been through troubling times before and come out the other side but
now, somehow, the stakes seem so much higher.
I offer you some thoughts to reflect upon as we travel through Lent. The
run up to the poignancy of Maundy Thursday and the pain of Good Friday
before the joyful celebration of Easter Day. Lent is a good time to slow
down and 'take stock'. The first Christmas life was pretty difficult then
too. The people were surrounded by soldiers, crushed and oppressed by a
new and Mighty Power the Romans. Everyday life was a struggle for
ordinary people and the future must have seemed bleak.
Into that uncertainty came Jesus quietly and almost unnoticed well it's
true, a handful of shepherds noticed and a few wise men from the East
but practically everybody else missed this world changing event. The
arrival of the 'Light of the World' come to save the world bringing light
and new life. The mighty power of God at work on earth! There is no
greater power than this and Jesus' power is still alive. It is a different kind
of power, it is not power over people but the power to love all people and
help them to love one another 'as He has first loved us'.
Jesus came to show us a different way; a way based on love, peace and
justice for all; and if the world is to be a brighter and safer place for all of us
to live in then perhaps His Way is the one to try. It's not easy but then He
never said it would be!
Some final words in a famous quote from G K Chesterton to ponder on this
month:
"The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been
found difficult, and left untried".
Much Love Revd Jane

FROM THE TRUSTEES OF GAYTON JUBILEE VILLAGE HALL
Your local village hall is continuing to thrive, in fact it has taken on a new lease of life! We
have just held our first children's sale in aid of Break Charity. All our tables were taken,
footfall was a little light, but the weather was maybe not too good for bringing out mums
with small children. The tea and cake were good though and the money we raised will
be gratefully received.
Our next venture is Bake Off for Comic Relief on Saturday 18th March
at 10 a.m. So, come on all you cake makers, young, and not so! Bring
your best efforts to the village hall and have them tasted and judged. Tea
and cake (of course!!) will be on offer, and there are lots of prizes to be
won. We hope to raise as much money as possible for this charity, whilst
also having fun. Entry fee will be 3 for adults and 2 for children up to the
age of 16, with all profits going to Comic Relief. To register your entry
please go to our Facebook page @gaytonjubileehall. You can also contact us
through Facebook to let us know of any events you would like to see at the village hall.
Enquiries can also sent to the Trustees at gjvhall@gmail.com.
Easter Bingo will be on Friday 7th April, eyes down at 7.30p.m. come and win all your
Easter Eggs.
Monday's line dancing (6 7 pm) is going well, new comers always welcome, as is the
Yoga class on a Thursday evening (8 9.15 pm). Again, always room for a few more. If
you would like to hold a one-off event, or regular weekly session, our diary details are
given below. You can also keep up to date with all events on our Facebook page.
If you can help, please contact Linda Watkinson Guide Leader 01553 636629.

Gayton WI
Gayton WI has been in existence for almost 71 years and continues to provide
friendship, social outings and the opportunity to learn new skills. Some of the topics
we are looking forward to enjoying this year are: Inside out Looking at Lingerie, All
things Art Deco, Hats Off an up-cycling experience, Points of interest from King's
Lynn through to Wells and Dressing the table for that special occasion. We hope
there will be something of interest for everyone.
In February we welcomed the Bead Queen, Lorraine
Cannell, who brought along a lovely selection of
jewellery that she had made. She explained the
different types of pearls that are available, and all
about the gems and beads she uses. Coral from the
sea, jade from rivers, amber from the sap from trees,
opals from Peru, carnelians perhaps even from
Heacham beach, it seems they are there if you are
lucky enough to find them. She was thanked for her presentation by President
Gillian.
During the break for refreshments Lorraine judged the competition for a favourite
piece of jewellery and the winner was Penny Andrews, 2nd Margaret Neal and 3rd
Mary.
Following the reading of the minutes and the various announcements for forthcoming
events, the draw for the raffle was made and the winner was Sheila, with Gillian
second.
Everyone admired the Christmas card that had been sent to the WI from the children
at Gayton School, which will be kept in our archives.
If you think you would enjoy making new friends, please join us on the first Tuesday
of each month at the Jubilee Hall.
It is a mixed level class, suitable for just about everyone, with the exception of
minors.
If you have not been in the hall, you should, it is a very lovely space, especially to
practice yoga in. So if you are interested or know anyone who might be please come
along on a Thursday evening. Doors open from 7.50pm.

PLEA ! For someone who likes a tiny bit of gardening and takes
pride in our lovely village, Gayton
For years I have tended the area round the village sign, I have bought plants/shrubs,
fertiliser and cut back the shrubs as required, planted the bulbs and generally tried to
keep it tidy. Kevin Nash cuts the grass. Due to age and less ability I can no longer
tend the area and request for someone to take over. Penny Andrews
On behalf of the community and many passers-by may I thank Penny for her
dedication in making our lives just that bit brighter for many years. ED.

Pancakes
In our family, pancakes aren't just for Shrove Tuesday, we enjoy them, in different
guises, all the year round and this is one of our favourite recipes for
savoury pancakes

1-1/4 cups milk 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Make your pancake batter just a little thicker than crepes, cook them and stack
them with wax/greaseproof paper between them and put them to one side.
Take one pancake. Place fish mixture down the middle and pull flaps over. Place in
an oiled, oven proof dish. Repeat with other pancakes. These can be refrigerated
for a few hours if you like.
To cook. Drizzle a little Olive oil over the pancakes and cover the dish with tin foil
and bake in a pre-heated over 200 degs for 25mins.

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS
LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
The Parish Council met on Wednesday 8th February 2017 for its first meeting of the
New Year.
The Budget had been set in the December meeting, and saw a very small increase,
meaning an average Band D house will pay approx. 1.94 per year extra or 16p a
month. This increase hopefully will allow us to keep the parish looking good and to
look at replacing the much-dated play equipment, sometime in the future.
Unfortunately, we also have to reported the resignation of Cllr Alan Smith, who has
served for some time on the Parish Council. His experience and wisdom will be
sadly missed. However, this now leaves a vacancy for co-option. If you would be
interested in this role, then please email on
holttowncouncil@gmail.com<mailto:holttowncouncil@gmail.com, with a brief
description as to why you are interested and what skills you have to offer the Parish
Council: or give the Clerk a ring on 01553 630655 for an informal chat. It would be
good to see some applicants from Leziate, as we badly need some representation
for this side of the parish.
Two long outstanding issues were raised again. Firstly, the hedge on East Winch
Road which needs cutting before the start of the bird nesting season. After much
chasing, we have been promised that this will be done in February! The second
issue was the "lake" in Church Lane which has occurred after the Anglian Water
works. NCC have agreed to dig a couple of grippes to try and alleviate the
problem. The Parish Council are however keen to see Anglian Water pay for any
work as they have not reinstated this area, as promised. The conversation goes on.
Lastly, we are asking, yet again, for flags on the bus stop poles and hopefully some
timetable information. This has been promised but never forthcoming so we will
press even harder.
The next Parish Council meeting will be on 8th March starting at 7.30 in the village
hall and all are welcome to come and "have your say"
This meeting will be important for the future of the Homewatch scheme in the
parish. Cllr Alan Smith was the Chair of Homewatch and at the last AGM there was
no one willing to take on this mantle. It is going to be on the agenda to discuss the
future of Homewatch and see what part the Parish Council can take to try and keep
it going. It is worth pointing out that having a Homewatch scheme does help lower
insurance premiums. we look forward to seeing you on the 8th.

Simply Sing Community Choir
Do you enjoy singing? Would you like to try a new interest in 2017 ? If so, Simply Sing
Community Choir might just be what you are looking for. We sing a variety of songs,
have a lot of fun and perform a couple of concerts each year to raise money for charity
. Last year we had our summer concert in St. John's Church raising money for the East
Anglian Air Ambulance and in December we held our Christmas concert in the beautiful
surroundings of Kings Lynn Town Hall and raised 825 for The Big C. Norfolk cancer
charity.
We have four sections - bass, tenor, alto and soprano. There are no auditions, no need
to read music, just an enjoyment of singing with like-minded people. We meet for
rehearsals on Thursday evenings 7.00pm to 9.00pm during term time at Churchill Park
School, Winston Churchill Drive, Kings Lynn.
We pay a termly subscription of 35 but if you want to try us out before you sign up,
your first two sessions are free. We have a website where you can find further
information:- www.simplysingcommunitychoir.com. Alternatively, just turn up and meet
us on a Thursday evening. We have started learning some new songs, are a friendly
bunch, laugh a lot and would be pleased to welcome you.
And Finally......
I was walking the dogs the other day when all of a sudden they vanished into thin
air. Not sure where they went, but I've got some leads.....
