Holiness
From the Pastors Pen
Are you holy? We often think holiness is a virtue, being pure and righteous
in conduct and thought, but that is not the complete story. According to the
Bible, to be holy means to be set apart for the use of God, and God does
not require perfection before loving, claiming, and using us. Gods grace
forgives, overlooks, and provides all that we lack for his service. The Holy
Spirit empowers us to do the ministries and services God into which God has
called us. God does not give us an impossible ideal to strive after, but rather
a personal relationship from which we can become more than what we
currently are.
Another way to think about holiness is to remember Galatians 2:20, It is no
longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in
the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself
for me. God placed the Spirit of Jesus within us so that we can have the
presence and power of Jesus and slowly become like him.
William Temple explains:
It is not good giving me a play like Hamlet or King Lear and telling me to
write a play like that. Shakespeare could do it; I cant. And it is not good
showing me the life of Jesus and telling me to live a life like that. Jesus
could do it; I cant.
But if the genius of Shakespeare could come and live in me, then I could
write plays like that. And if the Spirit of Jesus could come and live in me,
then I could live a life like that. It is not that we should strive to be like Jesus,
but that He by His Spirit should come and live in us.1

Yet to have the Holy Spirit live within us is not the same as being good hosts and making sure the Spirit
feels welcomed, loved, and at home with us. To let the Holy Spirit abide with us, Oswald Chambers
warns, is not always an easy, pleasant, or joyful experience. The Holy Spirit will not be a polite guest, but

an invasive lord. He will go into rooms uninvited; snoop, investigate, and inquire about all aspects of our
lives. The Spirit takes charge of everything, my part is to walk in the light and to obey all that He
reveals.2

We are pronounced holy by God when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and seek to live with and
for God. The more we demonstrate our dedication to God with our words and actions, the more we will
display the holiness of God within us. The more comfortable we become with having the continual
presence of God within us, the more likely we will develop the character and qualities of Jesus in us, and
be used by God.

Lent helps us take part in this slow process of providing a hospitable home within our inner being for
the Holy Spirit and becoming more like Christ. If we have hope to live with God forever in the future, we
have to learn how to live with and please God in the here and now. Reflect, meditate, take up spiritual
disciplines, and be holy.
