My name is Lauren Thomas, and I am writing to you to express my interest in becoming a

science teacher at your school. I received my BA in Secondary Education with a focus in
Biological Sciences from Arizona State University, and in the process, completed internships in
schools throughout Gilbert, one being Williams Field. The vision and culture of your school is
the exact type of environment I have pictured myself in as an educator, and I would love to be a
contributing member to it.

I am very passionate about science, in all areas, and I hope my love for it will permeate
throughout my classroom through exploration and collaboration. Through implementation of the
Next Generation Science Standards, I hope to produce scientifically literate students who strive
to educate themselves and their peers about the many misconceptions surrounding science today.
My goal is to create engaging learning experiences to stimulate critical thinking, and to prepare
my students for the colleges and careers that await them. In addition to collaboration, I welcome
any and all communication with my students and their parents/guardians to address any
questions or concerns.

My vision for my classroom is to create a respectful, creative, exciting, and cooperative

environment. I want students to feel comfortable in asking, Why? wherever possible, and to
never be afraid to offer or ask for help. I will encourage my students to challenge themselves, to
problem solve, and to think like true scientists! In addition, of course, I will be willing and
available to help them where necessary.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Felice,

I hope this letter is finding you well, and thank you for taking the time to read it. As you are
aware, your son, Mark, is a student in my class, and he is an absolute delight to have. He is
lively, animated, and often participates in the many discussions we have as a class.

However, one struggle I continue to have with Mark is his difficulty with organization. Of
course, it is understandable for a student to forget their pencil or need to borrow a sheet of paper
on occasion, but Mark seems to misplace these types of materials quite frequently. I have plenty
of extra materials in the classroom, all of which I am happy to provide, but I begin to become
concerned when rather than pencils or paper, its actual assignments that have gone missing. For
example, last Monday (2/13), the vocabulary sheet for Chapter 5 was due, and Mark had
misplaced it. Then, today (2/23), the study guide for the same chapter was due, and Mark
couldnt find it either. I am rather sure he is genuinely losing these items, rather than making an
excuse, because I have seen him working on them in class. When Mark does hand work in, it is
of excellent quality! He is very bright, and I do not want his grade to suffer.

In accordance with the policies of the science department, as listed in the syllabus, any late
assignments, other than those following an excused absence, will not be accepted. Due to this
policy, Mark received a zero on the two aforementioned assignments. He is very intelligent and
passionate, and I would hate to see his grade drop, despite his efforts! I was thinking that perhaps
a subject binder with dividers or color-coded folders might be helpful in developing his
organizational skills. I can even take the extra steps to ensure Mark places things where they
need to be by completing frequent notebook checks for him until he gets the hang of things.

Please let me know what you think of this idea, or if you may have a better idea in mind! As I
mentioned, Mark is a wonderful young man, which is why I am eager to find a solution to this
