1. Introduction
1.1 Idea

Endangered animals are animal species that are in danger of going extinct and disappearing
forever (Encyclopdia Britannica). As humans, we can all play a special part in making sure
none of Mother Nature starts to go extinct. My idea for this personal project is to create
something that would impact animals as I have passion for them. Ive always liked animals,
nature and architectural work. I had always planned on doing something about animals and
throughout my school year, we never really had a project as such so I would like to take this
opportunity to do something I really want. I would say that part of my inspiration would be
my father because we are very similar in the fact that weve both received compliments of
being creative thinkers. We both like making things and I grew up built into this sort of
environment. At first, I thought of doing something like a campaign but many people have
already done so and I wanted to do something a little different. After multiple deliberations, I
have decided to create a 3D model of an eco-friendly indoor animal conservation centre. I am
not exactly creating something new as eco-friendly animal conservation centres already exist
in various places around the world. However, none of them are indoors. I decided to make it
indoor because weather normally affects the landscape of the animals habitat and it would
take time to repair it but if it were to be indoors, it would not be affected. The rooms in the
centre will be simulated to look exactly like each endangered animals respective habitat and
the animals would never know that they are placed indoors. The 3D model I intend to make
will display the exterior design and interior floor plan of this centre.

1.2 Goal

The topics that I have always been interested in during my school year so far have been
visual arts, mathematics and occasionally biology. Because of this, I wanted to make
something and do something more creative for my project but I wanted it to also have an
impact on one or more communities. My aim or purpose of this project is to present to my
peers a model of a safe centre for endangered animals to live in and to also make it eco-

4
friendly as that would help the environment. The significance of this project is basically to
create awareness to the public of just how many animal species we will lose if we do not do
anything about it. It is also important to show them how we can do two things to help
preserve nature by building just one facility. The 4 things I want others to be able to
understand through my work are: - The importance of saving endangered animals, how
energy saving resources can result in a better environment? How to sustain specific forms of
animal life? And how humans can use development to sustain animal species?

It is important to me to complete this project to prove to myself that a small idea like this
could impact many people and also inspire them to create a difference by themselves.

1.3 Global Context

The Global Context that I have chosen which most suites my project is Globalisation and
Sustainability. This global context is all about the interconnectedness of human made systems
and various communities, relationships between local and universal processes and how native
experiences intervene internationally. It also deals with the impact and effect of decision-
making on humankind as well as the natural environment. My project deals with nearly all of
these strands as it shows how making an animal conservation centre can have prodigious
influences on the environment as it is eco-friendly and helps avert animal extinction. Besides
that, the Global Context that I have selected will guide me through the process of
constructing this model because I will continuously be able to understand the tenacity of
producing it and why it is very important in making a difference towards the civic.

1.4 Subject specific

The subject that is most helpful to me in this project would have to be Design Tech as it is
more towards creating and specifying. It requires a lot of creative and critical thinking which
is what I need to further progress with this project. Design tech has helped me in time
management as well as incorporating different designs in order to produce the very best.
Another subject that has assisted me was Visual Arts since I can use my familiarity of
materials in making the 3D Model. Visual Arts also gives me insight on the design of the
entire model from the architectural interpretation to the colours as well.

5
2. Investigating
The information that is needed to carry out this project was mainly secondary research as it
saves time is and is more reliable depending on which website I choose to use. I mostly
referred to online resources. I could have also referred to books but it was hard to find the
books that were really able to help me with the project. I also conducted one interview with
an architecture specialist.

2.1 Research Skills

During this stage I had to practice my research skills to find information through books,
online resources and interviews so that I may perhaps get the data needed about my product
before producing the 3D Model. I also conducted an interview with an architect and the
results are as shown. I was able to develop on this skill as I gained confidence in
communicating with other people and understanding their point of view. I was also able to
recognize the difference between trustable resources and those that are just opinion based in
which I must do auxiliary research in order to examine the reliability.

I was also able to carry out my research skills with some fellow friends and therefore
together, we were able to develop on this skill and learn new research methods from one
another.

2.2 Evaluation of Sources

The sources I got were mostly reliable because the websites I used were either written by
certified people or the website itself would have been certified by an organisation. I was able
to find an official website of an animal conservation park in Denmark and I believe that it can
be trusted as it is an officialised organisation. (Refer to appendix 2.2). The interview
conducted was not fully reliable as it was mainly opinion based but I used the secondary
resource to make sure the information gained was all facts and not lies.

6
2.3 Impact to Society and Community

I would like to show my peers how one conservation centre can serve many purposes; being
eco-friendly and also saving endangered animals. I would also like to impact the community
by raising awareness about the use of eco-friendly appliances/facilities and to make a 3D
model that shows the floor plan of how an animal conservation centre should be. (Refer to
appendix 2.3)

2.4 How does my Personal Project develop my IB Learner Profiles and ATL Skills?

The IB learner profiles I was able to develop throughout this process were reflective, thinker
and inquirer. I was a reflective learner as I had to reflect upon each meeting with our
supervisor and recall what the advice I received was. I was thinker because I had to do a lot
of thinking and contemplating about my project choice as well as making choices based on
that such as which global context to use and how it relates. The final learner profile I used
was Inquirer as I had to ask and ponder over how to make my work better. The ATL skills I
developed were self-management because I had to use time effectively and be principled as
well as communication as I had to communicate my ideas well to my supervisors. (Refer to
appendix 2.4)

7
3. Planning
Before being able to start on my 3D Model, I will first have to plan out everything so
that the creation process will be much simpler..

I have decided to use the S.M.A.R.T Goal, Design Specification, Product

Specification, Gantt chart and Product Criteria. By using these organisational methods, I will
be able to create and well thought-out and well planned product. (Refer to Appendices 3.0-
3.5)

3.1 Setting Goals

To be able to complete the whole Personal Project journey well, I have to have had goals and
this is the time in which I can structure it properly through the S.M.A.R.T Goals format. The
basic goal for my product is to create a 3D Model of an eco-friendly animal conservation
centre within the time-bound of roughly 2 months. (Refer to Appendix 3.1)

3.2 Design Specifications

In order to know exactly how I want my product to be, I will have to specify each section and
requirement. This design specification consists of basic requirements of what the product
needs to be like such as the measurements. From this, you can roughly tell how the product
will look like. (Refer to Appendix 3.2)

3.3 Product Specifications

Before creating the product, I will have to make sure I know what the product is going to
look like. The product specification tells exactly how it is going to look with simple designs
but a specific criteria on colours, extended measurements as well as materials. (Refer to
Appendix 3.3)

3.4 Gantt chart/ Timeline

In order to make sure I am punctual on submission and have enough time to complete making
my product, I am going to create a detailed timeline which will help me organise exactly how
much time I have left. (Refer to appendix 3.4)

8
3.5 Product Criteria

In order to be able to assess my product and make sure I reach all the requirements I intend
to, I will create a product criteria in which I will use to evaluate my product at the end of its
creation process; doing this will give me extra time to amend my product and further improve
it based on what the desires are. (Refer to appendix 3.5)

3.6 Self-Management Skills

Throughout the planning stage, I had to be autonomous and comprehend what I need to do. I
had to be able to have a sense of balance and manage creating my product while conducting
other school works at the same time. This was good for me as I was able to expand my
knowledge of self- management skills. By managing myself well, I can show my peers that it
can be done with thorough planning and proper time management.

9
4. Taking Action
4.1 How has the product achieved the goal and global context?

The products goal was to display a 3D Model of an eco-friendly indoor animal conservation
centre and I was able to do that through my model. The model has a structure that can most
likely withstand flash floods as well as lightning strikes. Most of the facilities and air
ventilation utilities are eco-friendly and more power saving.

The global context chosen for my product is Globalisation and Sustainability. I was able to
achieve the strands of this global context by thinking disparagingly and being able to show
the relationship between animals and humans. I was also able to talk about the
interconnectedness of human made systems through the creation of my product.

4.2 Thinking Skills, Communication and Social Skills

I was able to explicitly use my thinking skills in terms of finding resources, detecting
problems, using prior leaning as well as understanding the different skills I have gained. I
also used my communication and social skills through meetings with experts, supervisors and
other sources. (Refer to appendix 4.2)

4.3 Phases of Product Creation (Developmental Process):

1. Preparing the walls and partitions and attaching the structure to the base of the model

The first step before building the model is to prepare all the appropriate pieces to create the
base structure of the model. I start off by drawing the base on a piece of cardboard. Next, I
measure the appropriate lengths of each wall and partitions. Then, I cut it out and arrange it
neatly so that it will be easier to attach later on. After this, I also attach the base wallpaper
which is a wooden coloured paper. The next part is to attach the walls to the base and finish
up the final structure of the model. After finishing this step, the model starts to take its shape.

10
Figure 1:

Cardboard cut outs for foundation of model.

Figure 2:

Base of the 3D Model.

11
2. Creating the environmental cages for each animal

The next step of the creating process is to create the environmental surroundings for the
animals. This requires small cardboard boxes and cutting out the front part and replacing it
with transparent plastic to give it a window effect. After that, I label each box based on the
environment it should look like for example; rainforest, aquatic and others. To create the
rainforest environment, I base the cardboard box on green moss and leaves and top it off with
clear glue so that it dries up well and is not messy. To make the aquatic environment, I use
cotton and a smaller plastic box and paint it light blue to give it that sea colour effect. To
make a dryer environment for animals such as kangaroos, I use dried soil and dried leaves
and attach it using glue. I also add clear glue above all of this so that it dries up well.

Figure 3: One of the cages

Figure 4: Process of making the cages.

12
3. Making the second floor of the model

Follow the same design for the first floor and make an identical one to place as the second
floor. I will not attach the second floor to the first one yet since I have not attached the animal
cages in the first floor. I then proceed with cutting out windows for each floor so that light
can pass through and it is easier for my audience to view the model.

Figure 5:

Assembling the second floor.

13
4. Creating the environment for the cages

The next thing that I have to do is the most tedious and troublesome. I have to create the
environmentally fit cages for each animal. This takes the most time since not all animals have
the same habitat and cage sizes. It was also difficult since the animal toys that I went scouting
for were slightly bigger than expected. Therefore, I had to make the cages bigger but also
small enough to fit into the size of the model. I had to make a total of 7-8 cages for the
animals. After making these cages, I moved on to creating the smaller containers for animals
such as lizards and turtles. These are smaller animals that only require a small cage;
therefore, I used small plastic containers (4) to make these.

Figure 6:

Continuing the process of making cages.

14
5. Attaching the cages to each floor

After creating all necessary cages, I have to attach them to the floors. The smaller cages will
go on the first floor and the larger cages on the second floor. I attached them using a glue gun
since it is the strongest attaching fluid that dries fast. After that, I take the partitions made
previously and attach it according to my design.

Figure 7: The top view of the first floor.

Figure 8: The top view of the second floor.

15
6. Create the roof for the model

The next step is to create the roof. The roof is a triangular prism shaped roof that is
detachable so that the audience will have no trouble viewing my product once it is completed.
The roof is made from cardboard and straws. It is then painted over using light grey acrylic
paint.

7. Finalise interior of model

The next part of the process is to finalise all interior designs before completing the exterior
design of the model. I included plants and simple furniture to give it a more complete effect.
After doing so, I also added some benches and fake doors so that it looks more like a
conservation centre

Figure 9:

The side view of model

16
8. Finalise exterior of model

The final part is to finalise the outer area of the model which includes completing the
windows and also painting the base to make it look better. After that, I stacked up the second
floor to the first and added the detachable roof.

17
4.4 How did I derive my product criteria and why do I think it is sufficient to evaluate
my product?

I managed to create the product criteria through analysing the criterions from two subjects
which are design tech and visual arts. These criterions are closely linked to my project which
is to design a model. I believe that it is sufficient to evaluate the product since it stresses on
the impact brought by the model as well as the attractiveness and design effectiveness of the
model.

4.4 Product against reflective criteria

The improvement I made to the product was to simplify the design so that it is less time
consuming. I decided to change the design of the second floor into something simpler which
is basically the same design as the first floor since this allows more surface area. The
reflective criteria has also shown me that my product is not the exact same as I had foreseen
in the beginning of the project however, it was able to fulfil the basis of the message I intend
to pass on which is creating a safe place for endangered animals to reproduce and live.

4.5 Actual Timeline

I was unable to follow the predicted timeline due to time management issues. I had to delay
some of the work and ended up rushing the process. (Refer to Appendix 4.5)

18
5. Reflecting
5.1 Inspiration

The personal project is a year-long task that gives me the opportunity to express myself and
choose anything that I want to do. Since I was young, I was never really the bookworm who
excelled perfectly at studies; I was more interested in artsy things and outdoor fun! Most
people would say that I am more like my father since I have an inventive mind and tend to
produce things out of something unpretentious. I got the idea of making a 3D model because
we made one in Grade 10 and I had a lot of fun making it. I also have this adoration for
animals and the natural environment. When I asked for some help in combining all these
concepts together, my senior was able to help me in saying why not make something like an
animal help centre. This is how I got the idea of making an eco-friendly indoor animal
conservation centre. Investigating and researching was never my strength and because of this,
I was able to improve on both my primary and secondary resources though I always go back
to the internet.

5.2 ATL Skills

Throughout the progression of the personal project, not only was I able to experience new
things and express myself, but also cultivate various skills. These include thinking skills and
communication skills. I used and practiced the thinking skill when using my critical thinking
and metacognition in the investigation stage and also when thinking of limitations of my
project. I had to make critical reflections and sustained inquiry when transferring information
and critiquing various medias. Because of this, I was able to make use of new found
knowledge in numerous contexts. I was able to make use of the communicating skills mostly
when discussing my progress with my supervisors and exchanging thoughts, messages or
information through interaction. I also had to listen and understand the advice and feedback
given by my supervisors in order to improve and formulate a better report.

19
5.3 IB Learner Profiles

I was also able to make use of many IB Learner Profiles but the most prominent ones would
inquirer, reflective and knowledgeable. I was an inquirer when developing my natural
curiosity about the environment and the problems faced relating to animal extinction. I also
had to conduct research (Primary and secondary) and be independent in data collection. I
used the reflective skills when assessing and understanding the limitations and strengths of
both my project and myself. I was also able to develop on my meditative skills. I was a
knowledgeable learner when exploring new concepts that I was not familiar with before
starting the project. I was also able to acquire more in-depth knowledge of the things I was
already aware of and also develop an understanding across a broad and balanced range of
disciplines.

5.4 Global Context

When reflecting back on my Global Context which is Globalisation and Sustainability, my

product managed to reach most of the strands that I have created in the investigation stage. I
was able to focus on areas about man-made systems and two different communities meaning
the natural environment and humans. I was also able to raise awareness about a new found
system that can help improve and sustain the various forms of animal life. Generally, this
global context was once again proven to be the most successful as when I progressed through
this project, I was able to see how the global context has guided me through my motive and I
never lost track.

5.5 Product Criteria

When I cross-checked the product back against the product criteria, I was able to identify
specifically how successful my product is. I was able to analyse resources and explain the use
of that particular method of research. The product itself did not exactly meet all the
requirements that I thought it was able to do. The structure and overall appearance was not as
prominently appealing as I hoped for. Though I thought that my product was able to bring the
effect that was expected, there were many things that I could have improved on. Those
include the creation of the product as well as the analysing section. I was not able to produce
a very high quality product due to time management issues. I was not managing time well
and eventually found myself having to piece things together with what resources I could find.

20
I could have also analysed my resources better and justifies necessary points better in the
investigating stage.

5.6 Peer Evaluation

I was able to conduct an online interview through email with an architect and I was able to
gather useful comments. (Refer to Appendix 5.3)

5.7 Improvements

If I were able to redo the entire product I would definitely have thought through my timeline
better and given myself enough breaks instead of just placing dates in a rush. If I gave myself
more free days, I could have been able to complete other works then and had enough time to
achieve the best I could for my product. I could have also changed the materials of my 3D
Model into recycled materials as that would help the environment at the same time. I was
able to reflect back easily as well due to the process journal including all my rough work on
Google Drive.

Overall, I may not have done the best project but it has definitely impacted me
greatly. It has shown me and proved to me how passionate I am about creating and making an
impact on the world. I now know that I have a more creative mind that I thought I did and
that I can achieve so much more if only I put in extra effort. I had to face many stumbling
blocks to get to where I am today but it was all worth it and this project has given me the
courage to develop myself and launch myself into a much tougher world. I can also apply this
knowledge to future studies.

S.M.A.R.T Justification/Explanation
Specific At the end of one and a half months, I would
be able to create a 3D Model of an indoor
eco-friendly animal conservation centre. This
would be able to tell my audience about how
man made systems can help sustain and pre-
serve various forms of animal life.
Measurable The 3D model will be no smaller than a
305*458 mm piece and no larger than a
400*600 mm piece.
Attainable Making a 3D model of this scale is attainable
since I am passionate about making and cre-
ating things and the topic of choice is also
something I am very interested in.
Relevance My project is very relevant to my global con-
text; Globalisation and Sustainability. It deals
with the systems made by humans and how
that can affect a particular community. It also
involves the connections between various
communities and how decision-making can
impact humankind as well as the environ-
ment.
Time-frame The time needed to complete this will be one
and a half months.
