Chapter 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Air conditioning is the process of altering the condition

of air by removing heat and humidity to achieve a more comfortable

interior environments, typically with the aim of distributing the

conditioned air to an occupied space such as a building or a vehicle to

improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

In common use, an air conditioner is a device that removes heat from

the air inside a building or vehicle, thus lowering the air temperature.

The cooling is typically achieved through a refrigeration cycle, but

sometimes evaporation or free cooling is used.

Conversely, air conditioning (including filtration, humidification, cooling

and disinfection) can be used to provide a clean,

safe, hypoallergenic atmosphere in hospital operating rooms and other

environments where proper atmosphere is critical to patient safety and

well-being. Excessive air conditioning can have a negative effect on

skin, causing it to dry out, and can also cause dehydration.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. How can a built-in air conditioner out of ice dispenser help

you save electricity?

2. Does having a built-in air conditioner out of ice dispenser

helps in recycling?

Hypothesis

1. Null Hypothesis: A built-in air conditioner out of ice dispenser

cannot help you to recycle and save electricity.

2. Alternative Hypothesis: A built-in air conditioner out of ice

dispenser can help you to recycle and save electricity.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to provide a built-in air conditioner out of ice

dispenser. This study is beneficial for everyone who wants to save

electricity and have a calm and cold environment, this can

encourage everyone to recycle which helps the nature.

Scope and Limitations

This study will mainly focus on the benefits of a built in air

conditioner out of ice dispenser wherein we used tube ice and mini

desk fan for an alternative source of cool air of an air conditioner.

Definition of Terms

Air Conditioning - a system for controlling the humidity,

ventilation, and temperature in a building or vehicle, typically to

maintain a cool atmosphere in warm conditions.

Dehydration - condition caused by the excessive loss of water

from the body, which causes a rise in blood sodium levels.

Humidity - is the amount of water vapor in the air.

Hypoallergenic - is used to describe items that cause or are

claimed to cause fewer allergic reactions.

Thermal Comfort - is the condition of mind that expresses

satisfaction with the thermal environment.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Local. Mark Schnubel (2008) When mobile air conditioning

was first introduced, it was considered a luxury. Its usefulness,

however, has made it a necessity. As a matter of fact, if a vehicle

6

is not equipped with air conditioning, its value is dramatically

reduced on the resale market.

Foreign. Billy Langley (2000) There are basically two reasons for

the use of an air conditioning system. The first is to improve some

industrial or manufacturing process, and the second is to provide

human comfort. The indoor conditions required are determined by the

need and the desire of the occupants or the process. Thus, for human

comfort applications, an understanding of the required body functions

is fundamental to a proper understanding of air conditioning.

Human comfort depends on the rate at which the body loses heat. The

human body is a heat machine that uses food as its fuel. The food that

we eat contains the components carbon and hydrogen. The energy in

these components is released by oxidation of the food. When we

breathe in air, the oxygen that is taken from the air is necessary for the

oxidation of the food. When we consider the products of combustion

that occur in a gas flame, we know that the products of combustion

(oxidation) are carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Local. David Chadderton (2014) As the worlds population

develop their economies, the need for air conditioning will

increase, along with its attendant power demand. Those who

think fossil fuel atmospheric emissions, have to come to terms

with economic development around the world by those who do

not now have air conditioning, food refrigeration, TV and smart

phones. Make up your own mind about how the world can

develop and be sustainable into future generations.

The extent of the cooling season determines energy use and

running costs for air conditioning. Tropical regions have a cooling

season that lasts all through the year, with no winter as

compared with Europe. Many tropical regions have few periods of

clear blue sky and bright sunlit conditions. Peak summer has the

sun directly overhead and this coincides with the wet or monsoon

season. Variations in monthly design conditions can be minor with

year round cooling and dehumidification plant loads producing

consistently high energy usage and power demand.

Foreign. MJ Lendell (2004) An explanation is that ventilation

systems in buildings, especially those with AC systems or

8

humidification systems, disseminate contaminants into the indoor air.

What these contaminants might be, and through what biological

response mechanisms they cause a constellation of non-specific

symptoms, is not yet clear.

A more likely explanation is that the moisture in AC and humidification

systems results in microbiological exposures that cause health effects

through mechanisms that are irritant, toxic, or allergic.

Methodology

Materials

Water Jug

Mini desk fan

Tube Ice

Plastic Bottles (or tube)

Basin

Water Faucet (optional)

Procedure

1. Prepare the ice dispenser.

2. Cut a hole on top of the ice dispenser that will fit the mini desk

fan.

3. Cut 3 holes on the body for the water faucet, and plastic bottles.

4. Cut the bottom part of the bottle and place it on the hole.

5. You can put a water faucet as an efficient water drainer.

Results and Discussion

Table 1

Duration of observation Effect

20 minutes Approximately 1/8 of water has

melted off the ice.
40 minutes Approximately 1/2 of water has
melted off the ice.
60 minutes The ice has completely melted.

This table shows that how long could a block of ice would melt in

one hour.

Table 2

Duration of observation Effect

20 minutes The air is still cool and the

approximate measurement of
the temperature is 43F
40 minutes The air is still cool and the
approximate measurement of
the temperature is 37F
60 minutes The air is still cool and the
approximate measurement of
the temperature is 29F

This table shows that how long the cool air would last in one hour.

Conclusion and Recommendation

Conclusion

The researchers therefore conclude that a built in air conditioner is

effective and can be used as a cooler rather than using the traditional

air conditioner people are using nowadays.

Recommendation

The researchers recommend to use a built in air conditioner to

people who want to save electricity. It is also a better alternative

because there is no need to buy anything, the materials are all found

inside the household and can be the solution to a very hot day.
