History
Thecounterintuitivepredictionsofquantummechanicsaboutstrongly

theEPRparadox(Einstein,Podolsky,Rosenparadox),athoughtexperiment
thatattemptedtoshowthatquantummechanicaltheorywasincomplete.They
wrote:"Wearethusforcedtoconcludethatthequantummechanical
descriptionofphysicalrealitygivenbywavefunctionsisnotcomplete."[1]

However,theydidnotcointhewordentanglement,nordidtheygeneralizethe

ErwinSchrdingerwrotealetter(inGerman)toEinsteininwhichheusedthe
wordVerschrnkung(translatedbyhimselfasentanglement)"todescribethe

recognizedtheimportanceoftheconcept,andstated:[2]"Iwouldnotcall imminentEPRpaper

theonethatenforcesitsentiredeparturefromclassicallinesofthought."

LikeEinstein,Schrdingerwasdissatisfiedwiththeconceptofentanglement,becauseitseemedtoviolatethe

deridedentanglementas"spukhafteFernwirkung"[24]or"spookyactionatadistance."

TheEPRpapergeneratedsignificantinterestamongphysicistsandinspiredmuchdiscussionaboutthefoundations
ofquantummechanics(perhapsmostfamouslyBohm'sinterpretationofquantummechanics),butproduced

until1964,whenJohnStewartBellprovedthatoneoftheirkeyassumptions,theprincipleoflocality,which
underliesthekindofhiddenvariablesinterpretationhopedforbyEPR,wasmathematicallyinconsistentwiththe
predictionsofquantumtheory.Specifically,hedemonstratedanupperlimit,seeninBell'sinequality,regardingthe
strengthofcorrelationsthatcanbeproducedinanytheoryobeyinglocalrealism,andheshowedthatquantum

Hiddenvariablestheory

Apossibleresolutiontotheparadoxistoassumethatquantumtheoryisincomplete,andtheresultof
measurementsdependsonpredetermined"hiddenvariables".[33]Thestateoftheparticlesbeingmeasuredcontains
somehiddenvariables,whosevalueseffectivelydetermine,rightfromthemomentofseparation,whatthe
outcomesofthespinmeasurementsaregoingtobe.Thiswouldmeanthateachparticlecarriesalltherequired
informationwithit,andnothingneedstobetransmittedfromoneparticletotheotheratthetimeofmeasurement.
Einsteinandothers(seetheprevioussection)originallybelievedthiswastheonlywayoutoftheparadox,andthe
acceptedquantummechanicaldescription(witharandommeasurementoutcome)mustbeincomplete.(Infact
similarparadoxescanariseevenwithoutentanglement:thepositionofasingleparticleisspreadoutoverspace,
andtwowidelyseparateddetectorsattemptingtodetecttheparticleintwodifferentplacesmustinstantaneously

ViolationsofBell'sinequality

Thehiddenvariablestheoryfails,however,whenweconsidermeasurementsofthespinofentangledparticles
alongdifferentaxes(forexample,alonganyofthreeaxesthatmakeanglesof120degrees).Ifalargenumberof
pairsofsuchmeasurementsaremade(onalargenumberofpairsofentangledparticles),thenstatistically,ifthe

experimentshaveshowninpracticethatBell'sinequalityisnotsatisfied.However,allexperimentshaveloophole
problems.[34][35]Whenmeasurementsoftheentangledparticlesaremadeinmovingrelativisticreferenceframes,
inwhicheachmeasurement(initsownrelativistictimeframe)occursbeforetheother,themeasurementresults
remaincorrelated.[36][37]

Thefundamentalissueaboutmeasuringspinalongdifferentaxesisthatthesemeasurementscannothavedefinite

precisionisconstrainedbytheuncertaintyprinciple.Thisiscontrarytowhatisfoundinclassicalphysics,where
anynumberofpropertiescanbemeasuredsimultaneouslywitharbitraryaccuracy.Ithasbeenproven
mathematicallythatcompatiblemeasurementscannotshowBellinequalityviolatingcorrelations,[38]andthus

Inthreeindependentexperimentsin2013itwasshownthatclassicallycommunicatedseparablequantumstates
