METHOD STATEMENT OF OPEN CUT AND REPLACEMENT

1) SCOPE
The embankments situated on paddy fields, marshes and soil layers need to be treated
in some sections along the line, and the depth is less than 6m, shall be improved by
replacing rubbles according to different soft soil layer thicknesses, local resources
and field condition.

5METHODOLOGY
5.1 Excavation Depth and Scope
The excavation of test pits replaced shall be conducted before replacement and
excavation are conducted in the soft soil area, with a purpose to determine the
replacement depth and scope.

5.2 Excavation of Un-suitable Soft Soil

5.2.1 Excavate undesirable soft soil based on the design depth of replacement. Soft
soil deeper than 4m shall be excavated by use of long-arm excavators. Unavailable
earthwork excavated shall be immediately transported to the spoil ground.

5.2.2 When the groundwater level is high and there is a large amount of water,
excavators shall be provided for digging in water. Replacement shall be carried out
by riprapping in water.
38

5.2.3 If the area to be replaced is large, excavation conducted section by section (or
block)and then replace this section (or block) before taking the next step, shall be
adopted to push forward construction step by step.

5.3 Rubble Replacement

5.3.1 Transport the selected rubble material to the site by dump truck.

5.3.2 Upon rubber backfilling without water, an excavator shall be provided

for leveling and compacting rubbles with its bucket to ensure every piece of
rubble is stable and minimum quantity of rubbles are among large rubbles. The
entire backfill layer shall be compacted by road roller. The sectional diameter of
rubbles used ranges from 150mm to 600mm.

5.3.3 Upon backfilling in water, the rubbles backfilled 600mm higher than the
water level shall be first leveled
4by
excavator
8 and then compacted for three
times by road roller.

5.3.4 The rubbles backfilled 600mm higher than the groundwater level shall be
first leveled and compacted, then provided with a backfill layer of 300mm
RUC4, and finally compacted by road roller.

7SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

7.1 Safety
7.1.1 Warning sign shall be display in advance as well as in working area.
58
7.1.2 Set colored ribbon barriers around the excavation area to avoid irrelevant
personnel enter into the area.

7.1.3 The foundation pit excavation should set slope according to the
requirements to avoid collapse during the construction.

7.2 Environment Protection

7.2.1 Disposal area should get approval documents.

7.2.2 During the process of soil disposal, should arrange some specially-
assigned person to clean the soil falling on the road.

7.2.3 Watering the transportation road continuously to avoid raise dust

7.2.4 Leveling the ground of disposal area according to the requirements of

environmental department to reduce any impact on the residents.
