General Music

Music Concept/Title of Lesson: Yellow Belt Group Work


Grade Level: 5th
Date & Time: 2/21/17 Period 2

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to perform alone and/or with others using ukuleles
2. Students will practice and refine a given piece of music to prepare for a performance
3. Students will be able to critique their own performance to improve the quality of their
playing

Materials:
Laptop Tickets
Speakers Dry erase markers
Projector

Procedure:
1. Take attendance
2. Ukuleles
a. Table Captains
i. Announce table captains, they pass out the ukuleles for their table while I
prepare for the day and take attendance.
3. Fiddle time Practice your chords while you mess around!
4. Some Changes
a. Tests are changing
i. I will give you feedback on the rubric for how you are playing
ii. We will do it in groups with your tables just like I did before to save on time.
iii. The test will be the second week of March. After that we will being learning
one last new song.
b. Pass out a folder to every student absent last week
i. Put your name on a piece of tape and put the tape on the folder. Please do
not color on or cut these folders, Id like to be able to use them for future
classes
ii. Keep all your papers here from now on.
c. Pass out new copies
i. Checklist
ii. Chords Sheet
iii. Copies of newest song ready for use
5. Aloha Oe
a. Begin working on the song itself
i. Review Intro
ii. Begin working Verse, Chorus
iii. After each section, ask tables to perform in groups, help students who are
struggling
iv. Ask students if they hear or see any patterns to the music?
1. Chorus happens twice, once you can play it one time you can play it a
second time
6. Ukulele Tests
a. Go over the new, simplified rubric.
b. I will have tables play for me as a group and grade people individually to determine
where the class is as far as playing goes.
c. I will do all tests at the beginning of class next week. Anyone who needs more work
will join me in one part of the room, to work on the song and test again at the end of
class. Everyone else will move on to the new song which I will work on with them as
best I can.

Assessment:
Teacher will listen and visually observe students performance of rhythms
Teacher will listen and visually observe students ability to perform a given song
Teacher will ask guided questions to determine how well students critique their performance and
how they may best proceed to improve

appropriate interpretation.
MU:Re8.1.5a Demonstrate and explain how the expressive qualities (such as dynamics,
tempo, timbre, and articulation) are used in performers and personal interpretations to
reflect expressive intent.
