Data:

Density of Air = 1.2 kg/m3 Density of Water = 1000 kg/m3

Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s2

1 inch = 25.4 mm

1 mile = 1.609 km

1 pound (mass) = 454 g

1 (UK) gallon = 4.546 L

Q1. Convert the following (giving answer to 3 sig figs)

a. 13 inches to metres
b. 1.00 m to inches
c. 5.35 inches/second to m/s
d. 65.0 miles per hour to m/s
e. 32.2 feet/second2 to m/s2
f. 1.00 m2 to feet2
g. 57.5 Ib/ft3 to kg/m3

Q2. An arrow is fired from a bow. The initial acceleration of the arrow just as it is released is 2.05
m/s2. If the arow has a mass of 120 g, what was the force acting on the arrow?

Q3. A plastic sphere has a diameter of 50 mm. The density of the plastic is 1200 kg/m3.
Determine its mass.

Q4. The sphere in Q3 is dropped from an airplane. What will its terminal velocity be if it has a
coefficient of drag of 0.35?

Assume the equation Drag Force = Cd x A x c2

Q5. What would be the terminal velocity of the sphere in Q3 if it was dropped into a deep, fresh-
water lake?

Q6. A balloon is filled with water until it forms a perfect sphere with a diameter of 127 mm. It is
then suspended from a beam by a piece of string so that the string hangs vertically. What
would be the tensile force in the string?

Q7. Resolve the force shown below into two concurrent forces, one along the x-axis and one
along the y-axix:

Q8. Determine the magnitude and direction (measured from the from the X axis) of the resultant
force due to two concurrent forces as shown below:

Q13. A body of mass 64 kg sits on a smooth, horizontal surface as shown. The coefficient
of static friction is equal to 0.72. Determine the magnitude of the horizontal force P needed
to just cause the body to slide along the surface.

Q14. If the coefficient of kinetic friction for the surfaces in Q13 above is 0.38, determine
the acceleration of the body if the magnitude of P is 600 N.

Q15. A body of mass 25 kg sits on flat surface. The coefficient of static friction is 0.95 and
the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.50 . This surface is gradually tilted upwards at one end
as shown below. At what angle to the horizontal will the body start to slide?

Q16. In Q15, what magnitude of force would be need to be applied parallel to the inclined
surface in order to prevent the body sliding when is?
