OBJECTIVE :
Design and analysis of a building using staad pro V8i
software, and hence show it to be more practical, workable
& economical.

WHY THIS PROJECT:

Considering future aspects

Considering need and value of economic design for a
civil engineering structure.
Why Staad pro V8i :-
It is the most intensively used designing software.

SCHEDULE OF THE PROJECT:

Two stages:
1. Learning of the software, and
2. Design/analysis of the existing or proposed project.

CURRENT STATUS:
We have learnt staad pro software, and
accordingly designed a building (concrete as well as steel
structure)
INTRODUCTION TO STAAD PRO V8i
STAAD.Pro V8i is the most popular structural engineering
software product for 3D model generation, analysis and
multi-material design. It has an intuitive, user-friendly GUI,
visualization tools, powerful analysis and design facilities
and seamless integration to several other modeling and
design software products.

STAAD.Pro is a general purpose program for performing the

analysis and design of a wide variety of types of structures.
The basic three activities which are to be carried out to
achieve that goal - a) model generation b) the calculations
to obtain the analytical results c) result verification - are all
facilitated by tools contained in the program's graphical
environment.

STAAD.Pro is one of the leading structural analysis and

design software which supports more than 100 steel,
concrete and timber design codes and has the largest
worldwide user base.
Uses

Professions
Structural engineers and consulting engineers
Forms

Structural engineering and structural consultant.

Features:

Object oriented intuitive 2D/ 3D graphical model

generation.
Provision to provide various loads like dead load, live
load, seismic load, wind load, snow load.
Advance automatic load generation facilities for wind
area floor and moving loads.
Full range of analysis and designing including static,
steel , concrete design and analysis.

GETTING STARTED WITH STAAD PRO V8I.

In order to generate the model graphically, we have to

familiarize ourselves with the components of the
STAAD.Pro screen. A sample of the STAAD.Pro screen is
shown in Figure.
The screen has five major elements as described below:

Menu bar

Located at the top of the screen, the Menu bar gives

access to all the facilities of STAAD.Pro.

Toolbar

The dockable Toolbar gives access to the most

frequently used commands. You may also create your
own customized toolbar.

Main Window
This is the largest area at the center of the screen,
where the model drawings and results are displayed in
pictorial form.

Page Control

The Page Control is a set of tabs that appear on the left-

most part of the screen. Each tab on the Page Control
allows you to perform

specific tasks. The organization of the Pages, from top

to bottom, represents the logical sequence of
operations, such as, definition of beams, specification of
member properties, loading, and so on.
Each tab has a name and an icon for easy identification.
The name on the tabs may or may not appear
depending on your screen resolution and the size of the
STAAD.Pro window. However, the icons on the Page
Control tabs always appear.
WORKING WITH THE SOFTWARE.

SETUP AND JOB INFORMATION:-

details can be provided regarding the information of the
job and client .

II. elevation and
III. cross sectional view
Details of the building

Parts of the building : rooms, recreation hall, dining hall,

kitchen,staircase, porch.

Type of structure :- concrete and steel.

Foundation provided :- footings.
Load considered
Live load-4 KN/m2 for commercial building.
Dead load- 25 KN/m3 for concrete
24KN/m3 for mortar
Seismic load- calculated by the software.

Results

Analysis of the building

of various parameters like shear force, bending moments
Concrete design of the building.

Reinforcement as per member.

Reinforcement takeof
Total concrete required
PROPOSED TO BE DONE IN NEXT SEMESTER:
Design/analysis of a new or existing project that may be
1. Hotel
2. School
3. Hospital, or
4. Residential building
Considering all loads that may or may not have been
considered in the proposed design.
Corrections may be made in the results obtained by the
software, manually.
From the time the water enters the distribution mains and
upto the time it comes out at the consumers end water
head is constantly lost in overcoming friction of the pipes (
HL
), and other losses. Thus net head available is important
as it will make the water rise upto diferent storeys.
