Poems: Blue Bird and Alone With


Everybody By: Charles Bukowski
Objectives: By the end of this lesson, the students will be able
to:

- Analyze poetic devices. Such as, symbolism,


themes, metaphors, similes, alliterations and
personifications.

- Explore how authors rely on personal


experiences in their writing.

- Develop their critical thinking skills

- Enhance collaboration and communication


skills

- Vocalize their feelings in an original poem.

Group Size & Materials:


Group size: 25 students

Materials: PowerPoint, Projector, hand out with the


lyrics for both poems.

Time Lesson

Introduction:

While giving the lesson, the lesson will also be displayed on the PowerPoint
slides.
15 min
At the beginning of the class, go over the poems that the students did the last
class. The examples will be displayed on the PowerPoint anonymously. This is
a way to praise students for their work and for students to see what others have
come up with. Afterwards, begin speaking about the poet Charles Bukowski
by simply giving a brief description of who he is. Afterwards do a quick over
view on poetic devices. Students have already had a lesson on poetic devices.
However, this will be to simply refresh their memories.

Development:
20 min Give the hand out with the lyrics of the poem Blue Bird and Alone with
Everybody by Charles Bukowski to each student. Afterwards, play the video
of the poem Blue bird. Once completed have a class discussion about the
poem by asking students what they think about it and discussing certain lines
in the poem and poetic devices. Do the same thing with the poem Alone with
everybody Lastly, show the image to the students and ask them what they see.
The image connects with the poems. The students to think critically and will
have to answer questions based on the poems and the image.

30 min
Assessment:
Individually, students will have to answer questions based on the poems. The
questions will be displayed on the PowerPoint. These are the questions:

1) Identify a symbol in each poem and discuss its importance to the


speaker.
2) What are some themes that both poems share?
3) Who is the speaker in both poems? Do you think the speaker is the
poet? Explain.
4) The title of the poem Alone with Everybody has an interesting
5 min contrast. How is it possible to be alone when surrounded by others?
5) What connections can you make between the image and the poems?

Conclusion:
Once students have completed their assessment, ask the students to share some
of the answers they have come up with. They will also have to hand in their
work at the end of the class to get participation marks. Lastly, inform the
students that next class they will be introduced to spoken word poetry.
