2017 Modern Woodmen Oration Competition

2017 Topic
"What Does It Mean To Be A Hero?"

From the competition website - In popular culture, heroes are depicted as

superhumans who fly through the air to rescue a damsel in distress or save the
world from a villains evil plan. Christopher Reeve, who starred as one of the most
famous superheroes in American film, once said, A hero is an ordinary individual
who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming
obstacles. This years School Speech Contest asks contestants to speak about
what it means to be a hero.

In organizing their speeches, students may choose to consider one or more of the
following questions or present on their own aspect of the topic.
How do you define hero or heroic behavior?
What characteristics do you think define or describe a hero?
What are some examples of heroic behavior?
Who is your hero(es)? Why?
How are heroes depicted in literature and film?

Students may use these questions to help formulate ideas, but they should not be
limited by the list above. Speeches must be at least three minutes and no more
than five minutes long. Speeches must be in the students own words.

All students will turn in:

1. A typed speech. Speeches must be written in expository essay form.
During the presentation, the speech should be at least three minutes
and no more than five minutes long and MEMORIZED. Speeches must
be in the students' own thoughts and words on the topic. The final
draft of the speech will be submitted on the day of the presentation.
Work that is not typed will lose 1 point.
2. A typed Work Cited/Reference page noting all sources used (at least two
required) to complete your project. This includes website addresses (the actual
webpage used, not just the name of the site), books, magazines, and any other
sources. You may use a bibliography site like www.easybib.com,
www.bibme.org, www.launchpad.ocps.net (library research tools).
All students are required to both write and present their speech and will receive
a project grade, based on both the required elements and oral
presentation.
2017 Modern Woodmen Oration Competition
The student with the highest score from
each class will move to the school-wide
competition.
All students are expected to dress
professionally (business casual or formal)
for the in-class presentation, as well as
the school-wide competition (see guide).
