A recently completed surveyi among 500 voters in the 34th Congressional District likely to vote in the
April 4th Special Election shows the race to fill the seat vacated by Xavier Becerra to be wide open
as nearly half of the respondents are undecided as to whom they will support. It should be noted that
the survey was conducted after the L.A. County Registrar released the candidates official ballot
designations. Thus, respondents heard descriptions of the candidates that reflect how their names will
appear on the ballot.
A ballot test that included nine of the declared candidates shows State Assembly member Jimmy Gomez
leading. However, at 20 percent his support is relatively modest considering that he has represented a
majority of the 34th Congressional District in the State Assembly for years.
Among the other candidates, former classroom teacher Sara Hernandez stands out from the field she is
in second place with 9 percent, and she receives the most 2 nd choice votes (10%).
This survey suggests Sara Hernandez enters the race for Congress with an edge over most of the other
candidates. Along with her strong fundraising and effective early communications, these survey results
provide additional momentum for Sara Hernandezs campaign and show her to be well-positioned for the
April 4th Special Election.
