Physical and Medical Fitness Requirements for IPS Officers

Well, everyone knows that IPS (Indian Police Service) is one of the prestigious
post in the country and the IPS exam is part of the UPSC Civil Services Exam whi
ch is conducted every year. Candidates who take the exam will be allotted to IPS
depending on their abilities, determination and the rank they score in the exam
. Let s take a look at the required qualities for physical fitness for IPS Officer
s.

UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted every year and consists of three stages an
d the selection procedure for IPS (Indian Police Service) by UPSC is given below
:
i) Civil Services Preliminary Exam
ii) Civil Services Mains Exam
iii) Interview/Personality Test

There are two parts for the IPS exam at the preliminary level namely, the genera
l studies paper I and CSAT paper II. The questions for the preliminary exam woul
d be of MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) in nature.

Note: The Civil Services Prelims Exam marks would not be counted for the final r
esults of the IPS exam (generally for all Civil Services Exam).

Candidates who clear the prelims exam will move to the next level that is the Ci
vil Services Mains (Written) Exam. Candidates have 9 papers as given below:
Candidates who get through Civil Services Mains Exam will be summoned for interv
iew/personality test round. During the personality test/interview round, Union P
ublic Service Commission (UPSC) would assess the candidates on various criteria
and decide for the post for an IPS (Indian Police Service) Officers.

Note: The merit list or the final selection list is declared by the UPSC based o
n total marks obtained by candidates in the Civil Services Mains Exam and Person
ality Test/Interview round.

The candidates applying for the Civil Services Examination should make sure that
they meet all the eligibility criteria for IAS which is same for IPS as well fo
r admission to this examination. Candidates who clear all the stages of the exam
will be selected for IPS examination along with fulfilling the eligibility crit
eria of UPSC Civil Services Exam.

Eligibility Criteria for IPS (Indian Police Service)


Following are the eligibility criteria for IPS Exam:
Eligibility to meet the physical fitness and other requirements.
Age and number of attempts criteria.
Eligibility criteria for the IPS exam.

3) Physical requirement for Male and Female IPS Officers


Male Female
Height 165 cm[For ST (except SC/ OBC) 160 cm] 150 cm [For ST (except SC/ OBC)
- 145 cm]
Chest Minimum 84 cm. Expansion 5 cm Min 79 cm expansion 5 cm
Eyesight 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for good eye 6/12 or 6/9 for worst ey
e. Near vision J 1 for good eye. J2 for worst eye

(In the first Medial Examination i.e., just after the interview, those didn t meet
the chest expansion criteria can appeal or show their chest expansion during se
cond Medical Examination i.e., after the result. In case, if expansion is less d
uring Medical Examination then the candidate will go to next service).

The other medical requirements other than physical fitness for IPS are as given
below:
Blood Pressure (High): Age 23 123; age 24 124; age 25 122; age 28 124; age 30 12
5; age 32 126; age 34 127
Ear- Good listening and normal ear cavity; 1000-4000 frequency hearing impairmen
t should not be more than 30 decibels
Nasal- Candidate should not stutter while speaking
Ladies should not be pregnant at the time of Medical Test
High standard for the Colorblind test. No inherent night blindness. Vision shoul
d be stereoscopic

Physical Training
Once a candidate meets all the physical and medical requirements he/she gets sel
ected for IPS (Indian Police Service) post, the first 3 months of their 2 years
assessment period would be in LBSNAA, Mussoorie for the Foundation Course, which
is a regular training for IAS, IPS, and IFS officers. Then the candidates selec
ted for IPS would proceed to the National Police Academy (NPA), Hyderabad for 11
months of academic training. Here candidates would undergo both indoor and outd
oor training.

Classes on IPC/CrPC/IEA/Ethics/Police Management etc along with seminars and lec
tures from renowned personalities from around the country. PT, Cross Countr
y Runs of 16kms, Firearms training, Route marches, Unarmed Combat training, game
s, horse-riding and much more.

During the training period, candidates would also have to visit institutes acros
s the country as part of training.
Later, candidates will continue for 6 months of training in their allotted cadre
, after which they have to spend one month for academic training then they will
go back to their allotted cadre as confirmed IPS officers.

2) Age and number of attempts criteria


The UPSC Civil Service Examination with effect from 2015 raised the upper age li
mit and number of attempts for applicants.
The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances published on the
website says, the upper age limit will be:
37 years for SC/ST candidates with unlimited number of attempts
35 years for OBC with 9 attempts
32 for the general category(unreserved) with 6 attempts
42, 45 and 47 years for physically handicapped candidates, General, OBC, and
SC/ST category respectively

Number of attempts:
General- 6 attempts
OBC- 9 attempts
SC/ST- unlimited number of attempts
Physically handicapped- 9 attempts for general and OBC, while unlimited for
SC/ST

3) Eligibility for appearing for the IPS exam


A candidate must be a citizen of India to become an IPS or IAS
At the time of filling the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, the candi
dates must be at least 21 years of age
The candidates must hold a degree from recognized university in any discipli
ne. The candidates appearing for final degree exam can also apply for Civil Serv
ices Preliminary Examination. Candidates with equivalent to professional and tec
hnical degree that is recognized by the Government can also apply
The offer of appointment would be given to a candidate in whose case a certi
ficate of eligibility is necessary and the same has been issued to him/her by th
e Government of India

UPSC Preliminary Civil Services Examination 2016 has been declared and would com
mence on 07th August 2016 and the last date to submit application would be May 2
7th2016 as released in UPSC Notification.
